Tacview – Understand what happened during your last flight! (alternative ACMI viewer)

I did not have the time yet to consider different projections.
However, I will definitively check the sinusoidal projection you are describing when I will do another pass on Falcon 4.0 terrain support.

Tacview 1.5.3 is out!
Download: http://tacview.net/download
This new intermediate release brings a log of fixes and improvements for all your favorite flight simulators from Falcon 4.0 to X-Plane 11. At last, DCS World is the last flight simulator to get a brand-new exporter based on the new telemetry system which was introduced in Tacview 1.5. The new C++ exporter offers improved performance over the old LUA one (self CPU use is down from about 11% to 1.5% on average). More data is exported, recordings are much smaller, and you can even inject bookmarks while flying by pressing RALT+B!
This version is the last step before the long awaited real-time flight analysis! Tacview 1.6 Professional will – soon – enable you to review a flight currently in progress. A remote control will also enable you to control the local aircraft of the session you are connected to. This can be a handy feature to initiate your friends into your favorite flight simulator and to oversee in real-time a battlefield like Red-Flag operations.
These new features will be first available for DCS World, quickly followed by FSX and X-Plane, and perhaps even Falcon 4.0, if possible. Feel free to contact me if you think that you can provide me with any helpful information concerning real-time data export for Falcon 4.0.
I will soon produce several video tutorials to help you get the most out of Tacview.
Blue skies and happy new year!

Hey Virtuoz,
During a recent flight debriefing, we noticed an inconsistency between what we saw in-game and in Tacview (v1.5.4), and before we take it to the BMS devs (though I’m fairly certain they’ll pick it up here anyway), I wanted to get your input on the matter.
Basically, what we encountered is the following situation:
In-game, coming out of a right turn, I have a contact on my right gimbals (at 57°).Later, reviewing the mission in Tacview, all of us thought it should’ve been impossible for me to see that particular contact. I took a screenshot to check how far off-centre the contact was, and ended up with this.
Since it was a right turn, we believe it’s (almost) impossible the FCR provided a memory projection of a contact picked up earlier. Obviously, we also checked the BMS data, and confirmed that FCR gimbals are set at 120° (60° to each side), just like we expected from an F-16 sim.
So my question now is, how much of an error margin is there in Tacview when it comes to (player) position information? Is this an inconsistency because of Tacview, or a possible bug in BMS?
Kind regards,
Eagle-Eye -
Thank you very much for the feedback Eagle-Eye.
It looks like there is a lot of geographical distortion in the area you are flying in. It is possible that I made a mistake in angles calculations (forgot to use native coordinates instead of spherical ones for example).
Which theater are you flying in? Can you share the corresponding original VHS file? If not, can you record another VHS file in the same area?
-
This was flown in Balkans, about 15-20NM west-southwest of Aviano, so it is in fact quite close to the theatre boundaries. I’m unable to share the VHS, but we can do some more testing if you like. (unknown when, however)
-
Balkan theatre is not sphericaly projected IIRC (very distorted)
-
In that case, can you share me the acmi file we can see on your screenshot?

Here are some tips to enjoy smoother and even more efficient debriefing sessions:
- My favorite: MOUSE_MIDDLE+DRAG or ALT+MOUSE_LEFT+DRAG over the 3D view to smoothly and accurately travel in time.
- You can SHIFT+CLICK on an object in the objects list to go strait to the object spawn point in space AND time if not yet alive. Very handy to jump strait to a missile launch point!
- RIGHT_CLICK on the button between the selection lists to choose which telemetry is displayed between the two selected objects (like bearing, aspect angle, range…) in the 3D view.
- The dog-fight button [ + ] centers the view between selected objects. Very handy to smoothly orbit around a… dogfight or a target and its prey.
- Let’s not forget the full screen mode (double click or ALT+ENTER) to enjoy your squadron online-debriefing on a big screen while eating potato chips!

Tacview editions names are changing for new intuitive ones!
- The Free edition is now Tacview Starter
- The Home edition is now Tacview Standard
- The Professional edition is now Tacview Advanced
- The Commercial edition is now Tacview Enterprise
These new names are more intuitive and will prevent any confusion between personal and commercial licenses.
Nothing else changes: Your product keys will continue to work as usual and Tacview will continue to evolve for the better. There are plenty of great features right around the corner!

Here is my 60km flight of today, in south of France.
It appears like I was lost, turning and turning around … unless …Unfortunately, it seems that the conversion of .IGC files to .KLM delete a lot of information, as flight duration inTacview is 0s.
Anyway, It is funny to see my flight in the software that I am used to use in simulation.
Thanks a lot Vyrtuoz ! -
I am glad to see that you are using Tacview for real-life flights too!
KML file format was created to display static objects like buildings, surfaces, and waypoints. This format does not work well to store aircraft telemetry data. Most tools do not store properly telemetry data in KML files: They are usually doing so as a succession of static waypoints…
If you share me several samples of your flights in the IGC file format, I will add native support for IGC files in Tacview in a near future. What hardware/software recorder are you using? What aircraft are you flying in?

Thanks Vyrtuoz
I will PM you all needed information about files
I am used to Glide:rolleyes:I Try to convert .IGC files in .GPX files with some tools I found on Internet (TraceGPS.com).
Flight duration is ok now and I can follow the the real trace and route.
it seems that the conversion doesn’t deal with roll data as all the flight is wing horizontal. -
maybe not hitting the topic quite, but does anyone know how to “restore” broken acmi files?
hab a great engagement, but crappy machine was not able to save the acmi file properly…stuck in the loading screen, yadayadayada…
is there a way to complete the process for bms in order to watch the file with tacview?regards

Tacview 1.6.0 is now available to everyone!
The long awaited real-time telemetry is here! Use it with DCS World, FSX, Prepar3D, or X-Plane to record and review in real-time a flight in progress. An first draft of the instructor remote control is also available. This tool enables you to control up to four simulators, to assist trainee pilots and reduce their workload.
To prevent cheating, real-time telemetry may be disabled during network sessions depending on the host preferences.
These two new features go naturally well together: Use the real-time telemetry to watch in real time your trainee from outside and inside the cockpit. Help him/her using the remote control to pause its flight simulator and actuate some of its aircraft controls. In the next update, you will be able to directly bind joystick and keyboard to remote control commands.
All Tacview network features are independent and can be combined the way you want. For example, you can combine the real-time telemetry and the online-debriefing to review, with your fellow squadrons leaders, in real-time, a network battle in progress like a red-flag training.
In addition, many updates and fixes are introduced in this version to better enjoy flight review for all your favorite simulators.
While several surprises are on their way for this year, the next major step will be Tacview 2.0. This new version will offer a fully revamped UI, and a will include most of the improvements which have been requested over the years.
Meanwhile several updates are still planned for Tacview 1.6 and maybe 1.7, to offer a smooth transition while waiting for 2.0. For example, you will soon get an integrated static objects editor to easily add navaids to a battlefield and will be able to display analog cockpit instruments to get more intuitive and faster reading while analysing the quality of a flight.

About 20 people in my squadron have the pro version (now called advanced). Since version 1.6.0, online debriefing does not work anymore. When rolling back to a previous version, it wil work again, but not so with 1.6.0 it seems. Saw on Tacview forum that other BMS flying squadrons also have this problem.
Also, we noticed that if you try to change the connectionport, the port reverts back to the default setting when hitting the join button. We normally do use that standard port 42673, and we all have it forwarded in our routers, but we tried changing the port to get it to work again and then we noticed this. Maybe this is related to the problem?

Hi,
Just playing around with real life flight and some capabilities of Tacview, same with SRTM3 élévation data
and with SRTM1 (ALPS from Jonathan de Ferranti web site)
I have modelized with blender a centrair 101 Pegase, which is the glider I am used to fly
This is a 548 triangles model, far less than the 4 000 given as a limit.
The result is really amazing ! -
Thanks to your valuable feedback, the online debriefing has been fixed in Tacview 1.6.1 beta 1.

Sorry for the inconvenience.
