No targets on MFD

Hi
I have problem with MFD. I choose one of training mission “AIM -9 or AIM-120” and I don’t see any targets on my left MFD to lock.

AIM-9 doesn’t require RDR lock as it is IR missile.
For AIM-120, check your RDR antenna elevation & FCR range, your targets are most likely out of radar scope. -
(Sigh) The sim is so realistic that you gotta do a lot the work. Once you’re in the 'pit,:
Master Mode - Air-to-Air
Master Arm - On
One of the MFDs - FCR (and it needs to be the Sensor Of Interest (SOI)). Select by utilizing “DMS Down.”
When in range of a target, according to the FCR, move the radar cursor to the return and activate “TMS Up” once to ‘soft’ lock, twice to ‘hard lock.’
When in range of your selected missile, activate ‘Weapon Release.’ If a radar missile is active, hold it for a second or so. -

Hello, I’m reviving this old thread as I have the exact same issue.
I have followed the steps listed above by SLanger, but it is really hit and miss for having target show up on the FCR screen. Normally when they show up they are represented by small white boxes with a directional stem. In this case I can easily slew and lock. But, like the OP, the targets often don’t show up. For example in dogfight mission with bomber targets, I fly close up nothing. I fly far away and turn back nothing. I track back to the waypoint where they are circling until I have visual again and no targets are registered. I then resort to blasting them with IR…not really helpful.
However in a couple of campaign missions, the targets show up as 2 yellow chevrons (sergeant strips). I can slew these targets but cannot lock them. Is this because they are jamming me?
All this to say, can some one point me to the exact doc that covers this radar system and its symbiology in detail… or just explain it here.

@Tobruk In that photo the antenna is pointing towards Jupiter, if you fly in angels 20 it will be difficult for threats to appear on your radar. As for the rest of the questions, look at the previous answers or in the manual. Now I can’t tell you the exact chapter, but i will look it up and try to help you.
The antenna is the “blue lying t” on the top left of the fcr -
@Apolo27 Thanks, I adjusted the antenna elevation and it changed to a lockable target.
I was under the mistaken impression that the antenna when pointed down on the scroll bar, was for targets below and up was for targets above–apparently not that simple.
I looked through BMS manual/Training/Tech etc. but couldn’t anything listing the symbiology. However when scouring the manual, I learned a bunch of other things that I did not even know I didn’t know, lol.

@Tobruk I’m glad I helped you as much as possible. And yes, the antenna is not that simple, basically it is a “cone” that is projected at the distance you have selected in the range of the fcr. I strongly recommend that you read the manuals, there is a lot of information that is vital, I know that the manual is very, very long, but do it calmly

@Apolo27 I will review your chapter references. Thanks again. It took me 2 weeks just to sort out my hotas, now I am working through various systems, starting with being able to defend.
This game is like a russian doll, cudos to whomever kept this game up to date.

@Tobruk There is a command to center the antenna. Very useful to have bound to your stick or throttle

The little numbers show the altitude-range you’re scanning, at that distance… 99 to 99k ft means your antenna is skyward.
And yes the chevrons mean it’s jamming… It’s an interesting question though – how do we get any azimuth or distance return, with the radar pointing skyward?

My assumption is, jamming signal is directed at your aircraft and strong enough to be detectable from odd angles. Scope show what fcr “thinks” where objects are not where they truly are. So if computing jamming signal gives values for range and azimuth, target blob is placed accordingly. Same thing in BMS code, jamming signal is processed by “radar” code and produces some sort of result you see on the screen.
Also i’m under impression that visual representation for jamming returns is kinda simplified, there are very few vids showing such effect (for a very good reason) , but it was like many ghost returns in line horizontal or vertical depending on jamming type.
