SAR mission : implement IR Pointer
-
Hi guys,
I’m wondering if it’s possible to simulate an IR Pointer at a GPS location.
Just to make sens in a SAR TE.
Thank’s for your help.

I guess so, as the IR pointer is already implemented as part of the TGP PTR function. It would no doubt require code changes. I’m not sure how much it would benefit players in terms of SAR TEs though?

Enter coordinates as a Mark point, designate the Mark point to slave the TGP, fire the pointer.

I need to precise my plan.
Pilote who as been shot down wear an IR emitter and a radio. When the rescue team is in the vicinity, he requests, by radio, the pilote to power his IR emitter. This mark the point where he is located, so the chopper lead to the pilot’s IR point and can land near him to rescue.
It’s the way, I think, the SAR works (at least he did during Kosovo).
So, without using any plane, I just want to implement an IR point in the TE. Players will have to locate this point and protect the area during the time the choppers come and leave with the “rescued”.
This is the way I asked :

It might be possible. I guess you can put it in the wishlist thread, but as said above a single flashing light isn’t suddenly going to make or break realism.

So…you’re talking about a surface to air IR pointer? From a downed pilot? Yeah…that would be something different, not really sure what the ROE is in that scenario though. IR pointers alert everyone that can see in the IR to one’s location, so the downed pilot could give his location away to the enemy. If he did turn on an IR mark I should think it would be for a very short time…very short…only.
More likely - and more safely - the helo would use a FLIR pointed at the coordinate to verify a human on the deck. But it’d be interesting to have the option.

Exactly Sir !
Here is the story : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_F-117A_shootdown
The 3 choppers are protected with 6 x A-10, and in fact, the IR pointer does not work and the guy must use a red flare, with ennemies and dogs in the vicinity… good luck for him.
So… how can I simulate that pointer ?
-
I went back and listened to the audio from that shoot down (it’s on U-Toob) and in the end just before ejection he calls for the people trying to locate him to stop broadcasting his position, so I assume he’s in a fairly hostile area…in that case, not sure I’d want to throw an IR pointer into the air. But I’m guessing…what happened, happened.
But I think he was recovered, right?
-
Yes, he was recovered after a hudge fear to be captured (and interrogated) by Serbians.
He was very disappointed by the malfunction of his IR Pointer, better than radio and much more better than distress flare.
I think, but not sure, the frequency of these pointers is tuned with the US NVG. So other cannot see it. Must be confirmed.

I think all of these IR devices are much more “broad spectrum” than that…but who really knows? AFAIK these devices are like an IR flashlight…pretty simple, unless they are integrated into a TGP of some sort.
He was probably disappointed in that he wanted to be able to use all options at his disposal, but I have a feeling that if anything had been different the outcome may have been different. Anyway, they got him back and that’s all that really counts. MMV in each RW case.
