New throttle from VIRPIL
-
Looks like you would be resting your arm on those knobs quite a bit. Depending on what they are set for, could be an issue.
Not if you position the unit properly. Desk use, yeah, they’ll be at risk of unintended activation, but not if you put the throttle where it should be ergonomically.

+1. Needs to be lower than your elbow. Very nice looking chunk of hardware.
-
before I jump into the new pool of hotas gear for 2018 and beyond I’m going to look into the quality of the switches Virpil / Vbk looks good but I have two TM Warthog / Cougar systems with bad or worn out switches. good money for bad or low end quality is killing my love for flight sims.
-
What’s wrong with your WH switches? Which ones?
-
The joy stick switches die over time I have posted the problem but got no feed back so I thought it was just a matter of low or bad quality or maybe just bad luck on my part but I will take the long way around when it comes to my next purchase my faith in TM is damaged.
and with what seems to be new hardware in the distance Virpil / Vbk and the f-18 stick from TM and who knows what Logitech is working on we will see but no more will I just go with the status quo the money is good and the product should bee good to. -
Interesting. How old is your joystick?
-
about 6-7 years with two years use.
-
Hmmm…. I would’ve thought you may have a newer stick to which I would’ve said maybe the newer batches are flawed, but our stick is the same age but mine has had more use… bought it Dec 2010 and has been in use ever since. No issues with switches. I guess that’s the downside of light usage of this type of hardware… maybe if it had gotten more usage in the initial 2 years, then warranty would’ve covered it easily.

A switch can’t die over time.
Never seen it. not going to happen. It’s all mechanical. You can’t break it with normal useWhat goes wrong is usually the wires connecting the switches
And that is easily fixed -
Hi Guys
Switches do break. Even with normal use.
Switch contacts could be dirty a mechanical failure etc. Yer I said it a mechanical FAILURE as mechanical things do fail. Seen mechanical and electronic things pass testing then only to fail on next operation!
Why cant you replace the switches with new ones they are only switches? It’s how they are wired in to the control interface that determines what DX # they are assigned. Just ensure you take pictures of the wiring before de-soldering them to ensure you get them right on assembly.
Happy to take those JS of your hands…:D if they are junk to you.
Pull them apart and inspect the wiring like Red Dog has alluded to and if the wiring is in tact, then put a multi-meter on the switch contacts set in continuity mode with buzzer set and see if you can get it to activate. If not de-solder the switch and replace with a similar one or as close as you can get. would cost less than a coffee.
Cheers

I have been fixing cougar and joystick in general for more then 25 years. Starting with the TM WCS
99.9% of the josticks brought back to me with a so called broken switch was simply a solder issue
I hardly ever see a switch really broken. Most of the one I have replaced where either spilled with beverage or broken from a desk fall.
All the rest were fine but just unsoldered at some point or another -

And that is easily fixedWell, I can’t see that happening inside the TM WH joystick. Maybe with the TM Cougar throttle, if the wiring gets pulled or gets tight and the soldering connection is weak and gets pulled off…. I’ve had this happen on one of my Cougar throttles, but never on Cougar sticks.
-
Why not?
I fixed both throttle and sticks, same stuff.
Most of the issues are user induced. When they close both metal part of either handle, they severe a wire or route them wrong and create tension, which breaks at the weakest point, the soldering.
That quite happened in both throttle and sticks. Some solder point just let go with no particular reason - except probably a not so good solder joint to start with), seen this quite often on Cougar and Warthog alike (and FLCS, F22, TQS, WCS and FCS before them)
-
Not bashing TM I just did not expect this kind of failure twice being that TM is top of the line in Pc HOTAS at the moment and I just think that the expectation of higher quality for the money is not asking to much.
That’s why I’m glad to see more options coming from Virpil and VKB I’m looking to make another purchase but this time I will do my research and check my options. -
Your situation is quite unique. When did you notice the buttons going bad? How long after purchasing it and about how many hours use were on the WH at that time? I would’ve used the heck out of that stick during the warranty period so any issues can be dealt with under warranty. This was exactly what happened when my stick base went bad and got it replaced for free.
-
When did you notice the buttons going bad? - Kind of hard to say because of work schedule being on and off and not really paying attention but its done and I’m looking for a new love ( h.o.t.a.s system ) when it comes to the warranty period I just didn’t worry about it because I didn’t expect it to fail being the latest version first cougar and now warthog.
-
The warranty can be your best friend especially when buying new products –- the WH was “new” when you bought it 6-7 years ago!
-
TM Perceived quality strikes again…metal outside, plastic and bad connections inside.
This Virpil throttle looks amazing. Virpil like Baur and VKB, they make great quality stuff.

DCS looks amazing too - don’t make it any more appealing to me. Let’s wait and see how the Virpil stuff performs and more important stands the test of time before singing its praises. Giving such high praise to something not currently available makes me wonder if you have an interest in promoting it?

Did you see the mechanism of these hardware? Nope? See and compare with Unmodded Cougar, WH, Saitek and CH.
A trained eye would see the huge abism between typical stuff and these new hardware. And of course, there are the feedback of first customers. I am talking about design philosophy, materials employed in the available products ATM. For this reason I used the word ’ look’ talking aboutthu throttle. We’ll see how it is works when it’s available.
Now you get the point?Your Statement. can be applied to the praises to the WH quality…. They didn’t opened it.
Read about perceived quality.
