Air Base Buildings
-
Hello everyone,
I’m going to start making low poly building models for some of the buildings around the airports. This should be educational enough for me to learn how to model and import the models into BMS. There are some very talented people here who have done an amazing job on the airport models themselves, so I’m hoping to fill a void and make take-offs and landings a bit more immersive. My question to the community is: What airport would you like me to start on?
Thanks, Boomer.

Kangnung would be a good place to start as the airbase model is used at several other locations also.
-
MIRIM AIRBASE
in real life it is closed , but in this way you can indulge yourself to build it as you wish -
to be honnest, populating BMS with low poly objects is not the way to go
We prefer to do the opposite, replacing the old low poly objects with “low but better shape” objects
-
I would add some other perspectives to the question.
1. Search and see what raw material you can get. Like measurements - reference material pictures videos etc. About measurements u can get the xy from Google earth but Z is always a problem. U can find it approximately if u have a vehicle or a human next to the building that you know the height of. Human height??? hey Bill how tall r u? just use the 1,7m which is the average I would say.
2. What others r working on. BMS and Earlybite work Both on the OSAN airbase. I don’t know if the BMS guys r going to do the rwy-twy only or the whole deal but I believe they can answer it. If they r not going to do the surrounding buildings well it’s a good thing to start. A new airbase could use some new shiny buildings.
3. About the buildings don’t forget night textures (or be aware of this). The 3d model is the same as for it’s structure, properties are changed, what is needed is
a. a switch (one switch of type zero, it must be off by default.)
b. a texture (ptype9 for day ptype 20 for night for the lighted areas)
c. the lighted areas must be of a specific ptype (ptype20).
d. In BMS Editor, make sure you set the flag “Has lights” to on for your feature. It’s not needed to be the whole 3d model but just the areas that are lighted.
The texture u could use DX5 which means some kind of fade or transparency to make it more realistic and not on off, this goes for the Alpha channel, so it could be the same as day and just play with grey fade on the Alpha channel (50 shades of Grey will be fine… if u know what I mean… ). For low res as you go on off will be just fine.
Also damaged and destroyed models.
For those it will need much 3d skills if you don’t have a plugin, if u have it will be easier.
Now the tricky part with the plugin is that it will need actual walls to work correctly. Meaning not just a plane as a wall but a box of 20cm thick let’s say for a typical building. if the whole building will be just a box of planes then the plugin thinks it’s a box of concrete and tries to brake it all. If walls are there as they should then it brakes down correctly.Don’t get worry it’s doable. Make it just planes. when done then u can extrude each plane for the -20cm (minus to go inwards) to represent the wall thickness and with minus it will be fine i believe for the uvw mapping. It will be fubared kinda but no worries as it’s going to be destroyed in pieces so it will look fubared after all.
I can help on the damaged - destroyed ones if you want or give you a good start in case you need help or no one else which is better (i’m sure they are I’m just an amateur) doesn’t help you out.
So you see easy pichy… just like a walk on the park…

Mav, the only reason I was saying low poly was to keep FPS high. I wasn’t sure what BMS could handle. But if it can handle High Poly buildings, I’ll build them! I’m new to this, so it’ll be a little slow at first.

Thanks Arty!!! I know what you’re talking about on the alpha channels and using 50%. I’ve done work in photoshop, so I’m assuming it’s relatively the same.
Malc, I’ll look into Kangnung. If nobody else responds, I’ll start there.
Nove, I’d like to do AB’s that we can use in BMS. I’d like others to be able to enjoy the fruits of my labor. lol
Thank you again guys for the replies.

Well I didn’t knew I was that deep and meaningful in general and specifically in “50 shades of grey” comment but, if it works tell us about it to add it in the modelers acronyms as we did with the Mowers GOTS. [emoji38]

Subject: night textures.
Apply the 50 shades of grey rule.

Also Guys, where’s the best place to get the LOD Editor? I have it somewhere, but I can’t find it. Knowing me, I put it in a spot where “I’ll never lose it here” etc. Thanks gentlemen!

what is low and what is high?
If you could give us some numbers, we could give advice what is good and what is not worth trying…Also Guys, where’s the best place to get the LOD Editor? I have it somewhere, but I can’t find it. Knowing me, I put it in a spot where “I’ll never lose it here” etc. Thanks gentlemen!
LOD Editor is very much outdated for BMS.
Better do your modeling with 3ds Max directly, or do the modeling e.g. with Sketchup, then import into 3ds Max and export the LODs.Cheers

OK thank you guys!!! Biker, my main concern is adding as much detail as possible without slowing BMS down. The buildings I’m working on are around the airport and not on the runways or taxi ways. They’ll be behind the hangars and important buildings. I’m new to all of this, but I want to help where I can. Modeling has been something I’ve wanted to learn for a long time now, but was too intimidated by the learning curve. The only way I learn is by doing it. I’m open to any and all suggestions and help. I’ve started looking at pictures for Kangnung. I haven’t found much yet, but Google Earth street view has given me an idea of what some of the buildings look like.

Hi Boomer,
have a look here:
https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?22653-WIP-Leopard-2-A5&p=328093&viewfull=1#post328093Means if you go way below that 300 tris, that does not give us any improvement on FPS…
Cheers

I will look that over Arty.
Small update; Arty gave me a couple of links to look at for building cities. VERY VERY interesting!!!
I’ll do more research and start messing around with them and report back to you guys.
