Falcon BMS 4.33 U4 - Incremental Installer Screw Up
-
I have an issue. After not being able to load U5 per- instructions I tried using 7z thru the tarrent. I found that to be a big mistake. It changed all my desktop icons to shortcuts 7zip folders and now the programs don’t come up. For example, now my Falcon icon has been changed to a 7z icon and will not launch Falcon. Every time I click on an any icon I get a 7z folder. I did not have the restore feature setup on Win 7. I had the restore feature on a program called System Mechanic, but can’t bring it up. I tried a free program from WinZip, but after it was downloaded it popped up as a 7z folder also. I don’t see any feature in &z right now that will allow me to change my icons back to their original state to work again. How can I reverse this to get my regular short cut icons back? Wright now I can’t open anything; CCleaner, McAfee, WDP, nothing!

Too bad the restore feature wasn’t set up. That would have been easy enough. Hopefully someone has the answer you need. If you have your windows install disc, you might be able to repair it or at least re-install windows.

I can not guarantee but this may fix.

He can still do a Recover via the Control Panels to an earlier date. It uses the Restore feature minus a Setup Restore that is a backup file for his system, which he doesn’t have.
Under Control Panels>Backup and Restore>Recover System settings on your computer, there will be an Open System Restore button to start the process.

Let me know if it works or not.
Oh, also THIS : https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/38kuzb/my_exe_files_are_opening_with_7zip/
That should do the trick and you won´t have to reinstall the PC.

Thanks for your help guys. I ended up having to Go to the Geek Squad at Best Buy.7z really screwed thing up and the had to go into the registry, eliminate all things pertaining to 7z and write a new line of code to associate and return my icons to normal. All works well now. First thing done was to create a restore point and I plan on making an image disk.

Great to hear that the issue is gone ! And yeah, make a restore point for sure, you might never know when you will need one… and a back up image disk is a great idea too, when things go bonkers. Saved many peoples data over the years. You might want to do that every month or so, or set it up so windows will do that automatically for you.
Trust me, spending a hour for this now beats spending a week re-installing windows and recovering data.
