CH HOTAS
-
Based on a recent community poll, there’s still some CH users flying BMS. I’m curious to hear from those experienced users on their satisfaction or dissatisfaction using FS/PT within BMS. Yes, I’ve read the subject forum content, but I’m interested in some current user feedback as my CH controllers are becoming dated and I’m looking to either replace same or change devices.
Thx -
I’m not sure I understand what you’re asking. If you already own CH controllers, don’t you know how good they are ?
Anyway, I like my CH HOTAS because it’s accurate enough, it’s reliable, the program is top notch, it’s not as heavy or cumbersome as some other HOTAS, and the buttons are well laid.
However it’s not clear how long it will still be sold. No replacement is coming from the builder.
If I had to buy something different now, with a reasonable budget I guess I would buy the TM T.16000M/FCS HOTAS, though I wouldn’t get as many buttons with it. -

Appreciate the feedback. Couldn’t agree more with your assessment. Mine are going 7 years old and have provided good servlce. But I’m at the point now the microstick is intermittent and FS mechanical center is pretty loose. Trying to decide whether to stay with CH or move to another device and possibly gain better accuracy. I realize there’s pro and cons to whatever you choose, just wanted to hear from other CH uses on their experience using them with BMS. -
I just recently replaced my throttle do to problems with the micro stick. The old one will be used for parts.
-
I used the fighterstick for years, and as far as moving sticks you wont get a better unless you get maybe expensive VKB. Its got a longer throw than any of the other mainstream stick which leads to better precision. I “temporarily” moved to a warthog, and after trying so long to like it i would take ch over it every time. Ive since moved on to a force stick and will never go back to something moving, but if thats your thing then imo ch is top notch

Hi Dauntless,
Did you replace it with another ProThrottle? I have a PT, but the mini stick has always been pretty poor.
I use a Warthog now, but I’ve kept my Fighterstick and ProThrottle as they are REALLY good pieces of gear, and I’m not certain I won’t be using them again!
All my best,

It was replaced by another Pro Throttle!
-
In the past I used a Suncom hotas, Saitek X45 still used, now a CH Fighterstick, Pro Throttle and Pro Pedals, best outfit I’ve had, actually, I feel like getting another set as spare

With the latest addition of replacement magnetoresistive sensors and new hi-res boards the CH gear is still fantastic. Read about it HERE…
-
Personally, I’m not sure if I feel the need for these, it’s fantastic enough without it. I just nailed my 3rd AAR, and I have to say, the throttle resolution is perfectly serviceable. The Fighterstick with its gimbal is a bigger problem than that, though it’s still not a big issue. It’s all a matter of technique, my problems stemmed from tankers being somewhat broken before U1, and from not having headtracking (and thus having to fiddle with POV hat to keep visual and monitor the fuel flow) last time I tried it.

I have full set of CH. fighter stick, throttle, pedals. It is very durable compare to the others. Especially if you love to do Tom Cruise pulls often, that’s something like Cougars HOTAS cannot be done(and DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT DOING IT! it is very rare and precious HOTAS now).
-
Yeah, the CH’s durability is why every time I’ve contemplated a Thrustmaster, I’ve decided I don’t need it. I know that neither Cougar nor Warthog are particularly durable in comparison, and given their price, I can’t justify the investment. I don’t know how the ultra-high end options like Virpil or VKB gear measure up, but somehow, I doubt it’d last quite as long.

You can improve and extend the CH gear by installing new magnetoresistive sensors (stays compatible with CH Manager) or go a step further by installing new 12-bit mainboards (have to kill CH manager) in the Pro-Throttle and Fighterstick too!
-
I’ll consider that once the regular pots wear out. Haven’t needed those so far. Right now, I’m going past things like Virpil and into the world of completely custom-made (by myself, no less) controllers.

Have you ever seen inside CH gear and VKB gear?
-
The former, yeah (the throttle at least, haven’t had a reason to open up the stick), but I’ve only seen VKB in pictures, and they weren’t of the guts. CH is straightforward enough mechanically, but robust enough. I’ve had them since before either VKB or Virpil even existed on the market, so it’s difficult to compare longevity directly.

The CH throttle is a constrained mouse basically. It’s horrible inside.
VKB stuff is mechanical porn.
-
Yes, it’s a constrained mouse. It’s also a shining example of the KISS principle. In my experience, “mechanical porn” tends to break down sooner than crude, but functional designs. CH gear is a perfect example of just that, and its famous durability is a testament to validity of this principle. I admit, this set is not perfect, and I’m in process of investigating DIY options that might provide a better experience, but I don’t really need that, I just like to tinker. I certainly wouldn’t pay for the stuff I’m making (not a VKB-level price, anyway), not to mention durability is less of an issue when I can just print replacements.

Come back in 20 years and show me how well the others held up… My CH gear is pre year 2000 IIRC…

Contactless sensors with replaceable cams, springs and ball bearings.
Get a gunfighter, you’ll soon forget your CH stick.
