Just Starting Out: Trying to get PS3eye working
-
Hey everyone. I hope this is the right section. I’m just starting out with BMS (always love the F-16.) Anyway, I’m trying to get my Ps3eye camera working for open track. I have the CL driver installed, but the camera is terribly choppy and laggy and I cant figure out why. I have the latest driver. I’m on Win 10 64 bit, and am wondering if the driver is not working? Maybe I have a bad camera? Ive reinstalled it multiple times (with the cam unplugged) to no avail. The camera is constantly freezing up, and getting so choppy that its unusable. Anybody ever run into this problem? P.s. when I say “choppy” I mean it is so laggy that I can wave my hand a few times and the camera still shows me sitting still, and may not even show that I ever moved.

Did u take the IR filter off the ps3eye?
-
I havent yet, but I wouldn’t think that would affect the smoothness of the capture. At this point I couldn’t even use it as a normal webcam its so bad. Although, it works (sometimes) for like 3 minutes before freezing up and getting all choppy. It’s like this in both the CL eye test software and open track. The windows camera app doesnt recognize it either.

I’m no expert but I believe that’s a crucial factor.

I’d suggest start off uninstalling all drivers for it and using usbdeview to totally remove it from your system. What driver version is it? I have cl-eye-driver 5.3.0.0341 running well.
Also, what version of opentrack are you running?

Remove the IR filter (very important) choppyness is caused by using IR LEDs and not removing filter. Also set your curves and correct distances between LEDs in settings. Open CL eye driver utility and change gain and exposure of camera after removing IR filter to block out any other light, also you have to place a stiffy part infront of camera lens after removing IR filter

I will definitely use usbdeview. Good idea. I have the same version of the driver as you. Opentrack is 2.3.10. I only really mentioned opentrack because I used it to see how the video capture looked. It was just as bad as in CL eye test. As far as the Ir filter goes, I will be removing it for the sake of tracking the IR LEDs, but the problem I am having is making so that I cant even get to that step. it’s pointless for me to try to set up the tracking function at this point when the camera does not function properly. I appreciate all the input guys. I have never seen anyone else have this problem, and I have searched everywhere looking for a solution. I may have to take a video of what it is doing and upload it to youtube to show you guys.

I sent it to your email !!!

Make sure in CL-Eye Test that you set the resolution and FPS, it is under Options Menu , Video Capture Pin.
Run mine at 640x480 @ 75FPS and it works great. -

I have the “bad lenses” version of ps3eye, removing the ir-filter/block lenses did distort the focus, so i had to reinstall it & heightened ampere on the LED. I set the video capture to 640x480 30fps @about 60cm(ps3eye-led) to make the ps3eye easier to detect my LED. I also have cl-eye-driver 5.3.0.0341 running well on my pc.
I think it’s easier for you to start from swapping USB port and then to exclude software(driver/OS) fault before hardware.
PS: Sorry for my english -
Thanks everyone for the help/suggestions. When i get home today I am going to mess around with it, and see if i cant get it working. I’ll let you all know how it goes.

So I figured out what the problem was. The Ps3eye is not like a normal webcam in that it uses a ton of USB bandwidth. Because of this it can cause DPC latency issues. I downloaded a program called latency mon and it told me what was causing the latency issues. Apparently, outdated drivers (WiFi card driver, gpu drivers, motherboard drivers etc) can cause a problem, and make the video capture choppy. I found that my brand new out of the box pc had an outdated WiFi adapter driver, and an old Nvidia driver. Updated those, and now we are rocking. Now I just have to get that IR filter out.

This is one of the best guides I have seen around - https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/34403-a-complete-guide-to-set-up-head-tracking-opentrack/
Maybe it will help getting you up and running quicker.
Also, on the IR filter, never removed the one on my camera, but I did splurge and spent $15 on a true 850nm IR pass filter for a 27mm camera and mounted that to the camera.
Once adjusted the camera and tracking have been fantastic. -
Thanks for all the help guys. I got it all up and running today. Now on to the training tactical engagements.

What was the problem with it? I have mine working really well now. I just had to deal with the latency issues.
