OpenTrack, does BMS work with it?
-
And so you just wasted $10 that could’ve gone to the TIR5?
In an attempt to avoid paying $200 that I dont have, yes. Probably wont have the $ until end of the year so a worthwhile gamble, no?

What can I say, one loves ‘TIR 5’ and the other is happy with ‘Opentrack’ - and that’s how it should be:drum:.

So now the TIR5 costs $210 instead of $200. Sometimes, buying cheap ends up being more expensive than buying quality. Not saying the other headtracker options are cheap, just saying that for most situations.
Besides, who said you had to buy TIR new? Lots of TIR being sold here and on eBay from flight simmers and racing simmers who are quitting the hobby so you can get the hardware for cheap.
-
Yeah I looked at eBay and the prices are lower but the seller says no exchanges or refunds and crap like that.

Paypal protection mate.

On that note, there’s a reason they go cheap secondhand…
-
what do you mean?

FWIF, I’ve been very happy using my cheap Trackhat Clip. I went for the wired version since my Plantronics RIG500 headset isn’t wireless anyway. It comes with an IR-modded PS3 cam and a custom version of opentrack.
However that’s an older version of the software and there’s no reason not to use the official open track software instead, which has far more adjustment options. So I’m using open track 2.3.10 myself and the main advantage over the Trackhat supplied version is the ability to use filters and to fine-tune how responsive the open track software should react to IR signals, allowing me to " tune out" some of the day light that may fall onto the camera lens through my office window. -
When I look back over a decade of flying, never once did I do it without TIR, so it’s definitely paid for itself a thousand times over. And being that am not looking at VR anytime soon for a number of reasons, I have no reservations buying a new TIR. I see little advantage in buying something used.
-
No my point is why no TIR? Still the best around for resolution and smoothness. Trouble is, its way overpriced.

So it’s overpriced but it’s paid for itself a thousand times over and you would not buy it if it were second hand and therefore cheaper than new?
I would see the point in something that is physically used, like a joystick or a FFB wheel, where wear and tear can be an issue, or a CPU or GPU where OC may shorten the life of it. A camera that just sits on your monitor is not physically used and cannot be overclocked…… -
50 quid (max) buys you a sturdy, well-built, full-metal delanclip, a ps/eye cam (/w drivers), an FTNoIR license (if you must, opentrack is free), postage from GB to your doorstep and great customer support from Tomasz.
For $10 in parts you can build your own clip if you know which end of the soldering iron gets hot. Why throw money at NaturalPoint for a ridiculously overpriced, flimsy plastic product that’ll break the 2nd time you drop it (and you’ll do so, I speak from experience :))?
All the best,
Uwe

The track clip LED is very flimsy design and a shame to come from NaturalPoint; I think we have the same experience
I think where it is important is the specs of the tracking camera itself which is hard (impossible?) to duplicate. IR LED devices are available from other sellers and are more durable and better designed and some are even wireless, so that’s a issue easily solved.I tried other solutions before but due to lack of skill and patience, I just buy TIR5 and get on with it.
-
The TIR IR clip is garbage, agreed.
But the camera…nothing can top it for its dedicated design and performance combined with the dedicated software.

Spot on. So don’t let the build quality of the clip LED be a deciding factor especially as there are other options for this where you support a hobbyist as well!

I use Delanclip, and find it fantastic. Happy to share a profile, but i don’t know how it would work with trackhat. You would have to modify point tracker settings.

Hm, been looking at the Delanclip Gamer offering, it seems the specs of their PS3 camera match those of TrackIR, except for 75 fps against 120 fps. Just as good FOV and resolution. I might just get me one of those. If you already have the (modded) camera, I guess you could just get the Delanclip for 23 GBP ? Delan seems to be 6DOF too
