Identifying divisions/brigades/battalions in flight

There is only one way to do this. When flying a BAI mission, once close to the target area and your wingman request permission to engage issue the radio command for him to shoot you data on ground target. Once he does just match your FCR cursors on HSI with the cursor data on he sent you. It should also appear on your FCR but it won’t show up if your radar is zoomed in.
Also “request vector to target” in Awacs sometimes helps at least to get a general idea where the battalion is in terms of bullseye

That too.

Great, I’ll have a look next weekend. Thanks for the tips!

When I’m between the two waypoints and ask AWACS “Request vector to target” I get the answer: “The area appears to be clear” so no additional information here I’m afraid. Besides, doesn’t give AWACS information A-A information only?

Make sure to have a TGP with you because your wingman cursor data won’t always show up with a blip unless in the correct radar mode.
After my wingman requests a permission to engange and I request him to send me a datalink I actually get a data assign symbol on my HSD. So I went to that spot and dropped my bombs there and hit 1 target (pretty bad I know ;-)) but still that single hit was not part of the brigade I was supposed to hit. Could it perhaps be another brigade moving along with the one I was supposed to hit?

That’s interesting, I’ve never had that problem before.

AI Air Interdiction doesn’t have a specific Unit as a target.
What you get in flight briefing is as close as to RL as you can get. Speaking as a former tank platoon leader: RL intelligence information on Ground troops is made by assumptions of the known structure of the opposing forces. Or more accurate if already an engagement had taken place and a specific unit was visually identified by own ground troops either by making POW or capturing vehicles/material. And even then the picture you’ve been given in the briefing might be the picture that encounter once you reach the target area. OPFOR commander might change their plans as well :blowpar: -

Just receiving the data from the wingman doesn’t necessarily mean “drop bombs here”. You will need to investigate that area with all sensors available. Use GM/GMT/TGP. If he marked moving targets, you’ll need to find where they are going.

I already saw that the first time I did the mission: despite I hadn’t hit any unit of the brigade the mission was still a success. Still, I think it’s strange Intelligence gives me this detailed information and makes it part of the mission’s goal when in the end it is not required at all. But I’m glad to hear from someone who has actual millitary experience that it goes the same way in real life :-D.

That’s a bit of a problem while the mission is in the middle of the night and there’s a low cloud covering in the area. I would be a sitting duck if I decided to use my TGP in this situation. The mark I receive from my wingman is actually quite accurate because it shows the beginning of a column on my GMT map. Hence my surprise that my single hit was not a unit I expected to be.
