Cougar stopped working. Got any ideas?
-
I haven’t had my Cougar plugged into my gaming/sim PC for a while.
It was working normally when last used.
I plugged it back in last night and I got driver errors.
Nothing has changed with the PC that would be likely to make any difference. Still running Windows 7,
no changes to processors or memory, no hard drives have been changed out, nothing.I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers and restarted the computer a couple of times. Windows device manager now
recognizes the Cougar on USB and shows that it’s working properly but it’s not showing up in the FOXY joystick analyzer,
or TARGET, or anything else.In FOXY, I attempt to reflash the stick and literally nothing happens. It’s like you didn’t even click on the reflash option.
Got any ideas?
PC specs: Intel S5520 workstation motherboard with 1KW power supply, dual quad core Xeon W5590 CPUs, 24 GB RAM, 5 TB worth of hard drives,
Nvidia GTX950 video card. (More than adequate for my needs.) Windows 7 Professional. It’s always been a bulletproof stable platform until this happened.

I found some old information on the net that told me what to do, to a certain extent. The driver install program has to be run as administrator and in Windows Vista Service Pack 2 compatibility mode.
After having done that, I’m not getting any driver related errors. I can dump and reload the firmware in the HOTAS. But no program recognizes it as a USB device so I can’t use it. However it shows up as both a USB device,
and as a human interface device, in the Windows device manager. Windows sees that it’s there but isn’t treating it as a USB serial device.Very odd problem….

I can’t believe that nobody has anything to offer on this. Has the Cougar fallen so out of favor that nobody cares or remembers it anymore?
The reason I want to get this back up and running is because I feel the itch…to fly my plane into a ditch! (You didn’t think I felt the need for speed, did you?)
And…it is (was) my fully configured HOTAS setup for flying across the galaxy in Elite:Dangerous. Without it working there’s literally no reason to even load up ED.
I had it set up for completely hands-on-throttle-and-stick operation of the entire game. Never had to touch the keyboard other than to launch and type text messages.
If my config files are lost, it’ll literally take days to rebuild them but first I need to get the Cougar to be recognized as a USB device in-game.
Device Manager sees it as working normally. But no game or Thrustmaster utility programs are seeing it. Except that I can reload the firmware. I can’t find it with the analyzer. I can’t load profiles to it. But it’s sort of there.

Just upgrade to an x52 which is what I use

Send Maverick and Goose instead.

did you clean the memory off the stick ? pulled the usb out , restarted windows and plugged the usb back in with trigger hold in for a while ?
-
Wipe the cougar,
unplug it,
hold down the trigger while you plug it back in.
Reflash the cougar through the thrustmaster contol panel. -
I got it working. The Cougar draws kind of a lot of power for a USB device and found that USB power consumption was an issue. By disconnecting other devices and moving the Cougar to a diferent USB port right on the motherboard, that problem was solved.
And so now I have ANOTHER problem now that the HOTAS is working: The calibration routine in FOXY isn’t even launching so I can’t calibrate it!
-
Sorry, I use the CCP and have never used Foxy, so can’y help with the calibrations.
Anyway, glad you made some progress and it’s not bricked.
Edit: I’m assuming you uninstalled and reinstalled all the drivers and software…or at least in device manager scanned for hardware changes?

I have always used the Thrustmaster control panel to calibrate the Cougar.
Just recently I set up my Cougar on a Windows 10 machine from scratch using the procedure described in this document.

I found the issue and fixed it. There was a missing .dll file. I copied it from its location and pasted it to where it should have gone.
I learned this from this thread, and using its instructions fixed the problem.

Full functionality restored.

Glad you got it working. CCP would’ve given you an error message about the missing file. I remember this from when I set mine up a few years back. I even got the fix from the same post you did.
Now GBOTS!

And now that everything is working I can get back to flying in BMS, too. But I have to say, ED is the only thing I’ve played yet where it makes me wish the Cougar had MORE buttons on it.
It’s going to be weeks before I’ve got my configuration back to where I’ve got my workflow back.
I sure wish someone would come up with a simmer’s version of a JHMCS. A helmet mounted display with integrated head tracking would be simply awesme.
