Caged AIM-9
-
Any reason why Training.pdf, p180 seems to exclude a caged AIM-9M switching from FCR to HMCS with cursor-enable?

Presumably because AIM-9M can’t be slaved to HMCS. AIM-9X is the one that’s used with the HMCS.

You should be able to make a Helmet designation and get a radar lock, then once you maneuver the target into the missile FOR, UNCAGE and get tone…then fox.

yep that works for me.

Your answer informed me about what I didn’t realize, that the AIM-9M cannot be used with HMCS. Is that also true for AIM-9P? Thanks.
But it was my mistake to ask about AIM-9M. My question should have asked about “caged AIM-9”, where the Training.pdf said the AIM-9 had to be “uncaged”. In the context of the lesson, the AIM-9 referred to the AIM-9X. So, to re-phrase the question, why did Training.pdf seem to exclude “caged’ AIM-9, meaning the AIM-9X?

If your answer is for AIM-9X then it appears to mean that the Training.pdf should not have said only an uncaged AIM-9, but a caged AIM-9 as well.

HMCS designation is a party trick of the X, no other Sidewinders have it.
As for the manual specifically talking about an uncaged AIM-9X in that context:
Despite an irrational distaste for the X and the technological progress it represents, I tried it out and may have found the reason. Note how the seeker “sticks” to the MiG in uncaged mode, whereas a caged seeker won’t:
The older AIM-9s (P and M) you’ll usually want to uncage when they already see something because… you’ll learn why

The AIM-9M can also be slaved to the HMCS, and except for its cooling mechanism (liquid nitrogen on the M that can cool for about an hour or 2, vs. an electric motor on the X which can run indefinitely) and the seeker gimbals (M is limited to 30°, while the AIM-9X can go up to 90°), the M and X are identical in BMS. What the 9X has over the M is primarily that 90° FOV, giving it a unique High Off-Bore Shot (HOBS) opportunity.

What, who told you that? Any AIM-9 that can be steered by the jet can be steered by HMCS.

What you are actually doing is steering the FCR with the JHMCS and allowing the AIM-9L/M/P to slave to the radar. That’s the quickest thing to do - but if you do/should have the target in the missile WEZ, then the missile should appear to slave to the helmet once it is uncaged…however, this route may increase your acquisition/lock time since the FCR looks at a bigger chunk of sky.
Bear in mind that you aren’t really making a “designation” with any AIM-9 - you’re getting a seeker lock. It’s a subtle distinction, but it’s relevant.
