BMS F18 A and C upgrade - community involvement
-
Alright, I am gonna throw in an obvious question here… Isn’t F-18E/F are the new nowaday hotties? Then why are you still so fascinated by the good old F-18A/C? What’s the catch?..
AWESOME work! by the way…
The Classic hornets have very similar avionics to the F-16, so modelling a reasonably realistic aircraft, within the limitations of the BMS code is much easier than a Super Bug. Then there is the fact that many more nations bought the classic bug than the E/F which gives lots of variety for skinners. Other than the US, Australia has been the only foreign client and they only bought the F model.
Finally, despite all the information out there, there is still stuff about the Super Bug that is still classified. Janes F/A-18 is probably the closest when it comes to presenting the SuperBug’s avionics. Even with its good representations, I have been told by avionics technicians there are still many items that were simplified due to the lack of data. VRS could be a better representation, though. But making an aircraft of the fidelity, avionics wise, would require a huge code change in BMS.
Finally there is the fact that the Superbug isn’t in any of the stock BMS campaigns of either Korea or Israel… The classic F/A-18 has a lot more exposure in both which makes a much more logical choice for a full upgrade. In fact the only Superbug in any BMS campaign is the RAAF F/A-18F in my Korea 2012 and Eurowar mods. Even then, there are only one squadron of land planes. The classic F/A-18s number nearly five times that much.

It basically comes down to desire and interests IMHO.

This is an interesting read. Thought I’d share it.
It a F16 vs F18 pilot’s perspective.

worth reading. great, thanks.
SLOW-SPEED CHARACTERISTICS
There’s no better performing fighter in the close-in, slow speed, knife-in-the-teeth dogfight than the F/A-18 Hornet, except maybe, of course, a Super Hornet. But that’s another story. The Hornet flies very comfortably at AoAs of up to 50 degrees and has great pitch, roll and yaw authority between 25 degrees of AoA and the lift limit of 35 degrees of AoA. Most crowds are amazed when the Blue Angels perform the Hornet low-speed pass, which is around 120 knots and only 25 degrees of AoA. There are no nasty departures to worry about, and if the pilot happens to lose control, the best recovery procedure is to grab the towel racks (two handgrips on the canopy bow used during cat shots). On the other hand, a Viper has a 25-degree AoA limiter built into its software, and even fewer degrees of AoA are available if it’s carrying air-to-ground goodies on the hard points. Up against the limiter, the nose stops tracking; in that case, it’s time to drop the hammer and use the big motor to get the knots back, which by the way, happens in a hurry.
Yeah!

Interisting!!
BTW:
"If a pilot rolls inverted in a Hornet and lets go of the stick, the jet “pulls” IG and enters a gradual dive to maintain IG. Doing the same in the Viper causes the pilot to get light in the seat; the jet doesn’t feel any pilot input, so it continues to head straight and inverted. "Well, Mav-jp, that is what I meant in the other thread a time ago. Cannot do this in BMS.
BTW do not even remotely get close to the described stick sensitivity with my logitech.
"A full-deflection aileron roll is eye watering in a clean Viper (about 360 degrees per second) "
Never seen that in BMS at all. Seems, whatever you gents claim, it only works with HOTAS.
TBH I think my stick-and maybe some other guys’ cheaper setups, fall short with 50% of the potential deflection speed…in other words, I fly a much tuned down Viper. -
Any news on the Bug?
How’s it coming along, I’m itching to get my hands on one and try some carrier ops.
-
Can we see the new model?
-
I am sure you will when it’s done. 3 - 4 weeks
-
Amen
-
3-4 weeks is some kind of ‘in’ joke right?
Like “2 weeks be sure” for the Il2 series?

Why what makes u say that?
Did the 3-4 week passed?
Yes m8 it’s the oldest joke in the community… Some times used even before something is declared… lol

So, jokes aside, how is the bird coming along?
Is everything going well?
Where do I look to find news about this kind of thing instead of making a nuisance of myself here?

u will not see or will hear or read anything more on this subject.
It’s been worked underground.
I believe it will be a surprise, so none of the dev’s want to spoil that.
Some say it will be the BIG event of the upcoming major update.
So 3-4 week than… -
Untill then check this out!!! feel the need for speed… great footage from VFA-211 pilots in deployment with the “Big E”
-
This looks more to a Varitech than to an F-16

LOL, the CTFs look like the “Super Pack” of a VF-1A
-
What’s that? The executive model? Is some girl with a dog in her handbag going to sit in the back-seat and pout at the enemy during combat?
