Helios Profile for the F-18 Hornet
-
Good question… Usually the Helios Control refuses to run the Profile… I will give a try
So if CC still won’t run the EZBOARDS.BAT file the next thing to do is to copy the path to file you have in ProcessControl and hit [WIN]+R on your PC and paste the command in there to see if it runs. If not then your pathing is wrong.
-
Process Control generally seems to need the path to be surrounded by inverted commas, especially if there are spaces in the path.
So try this:
“C:\Falcon BMS 4.35\Bin\EZBoards.bat”

Hi, Wheelchock,
I’m finally getting a chance to work with this fantastic mod, and Before I really get into it I have a question. You mention have have to use your keyfile. How does that interact with the BMS Alternate Launcher? As i understand it, AL only works with BMS-Full keyfile -
If you use AL then take the included key file and rename it but just make sure you also edit the helios profile to reflect the name change.

Sounds good.
I got everything installed and it looks fantastic. I was wondering if I’ve missed a control panel manual and/or tutorial. I’m still working out what the CP switches do. Right now when I start Helios I get a full screen interactive “demo” of the front panel that I can’t get out of. Also, I keep failing preflight checks, possibly because the backup airspeed and altimeter gauges aren’t showing up? -
Open the profile in the editor and go to the interfaces tab. Are any sections red? Mostly likely you need to reset your monitor layout.

I have been a little busy these days but I will try everything suggested here ASAP.

Hey Wheelchock (or Linknet if you’re watching this thread)-
Just curious if there are any conflicts with using your “F-18” Bin folder vs. Linknet’s Ice’s F-16 Bin folder?? Or are all the application files pretty much the same?
Cheers,
Jolly -
Somewhere around 4.35-5 linknet changed some of the binaries names but that shouldn’t conflict with the F-18 profile but i haven’t checked it lately so it might. I had started working on making the F-18 profile self contained with no reliance on linknets profile but time is not on my side.
The only part that might be affected is the theater detection for the charts

JollyAs far as I can see there shouldn’t be any conflict provided you merge the two Bin folders so that all of the files from each Bin folder are present in the merged Bin folder.
The only problem you might encounter would be if you ran one profile and then started the other one without completely closing the Helios Control Center and then waiting at least 15 seconds before restarting it. In this case both sets of binaries would be running and could cause a conflict with the files in common being locked and already in use.

Thanks to you both for the replies. I haven’t necessarily noticed any particular issues to date with all files located in the same Bin folder, but I haven’t had much luck with updating kneeboards or the CPD map in Ice’s F-16 profile and just curious if combining both Bin’s might have something to do with that. I doubt this is the case and I’m sure I did something on my own to pork it!

Greetings Wheelchock-
Any plans to update your profile to take advantages of Helios’ new features??

Nothing other possibly switching to RTT

@Wheelchock
I’ve downloaded this profile a long time ago but due to the F16 MFD inside a F18 I have flown it only once and didn’t bother with setting everything up with Helios. With the release of F15C however I’ve been surprised with the new instruments and I’ve been flying F15C a lot more lately.Capt Zeen had an old DCS F15C profile as well, I’m already imagining how nice it would be to have this on while I fly. http://www.captzeen.com/helios/F-15C.asp
And that brings up another topic: Should all later profile all have a similar structure that they can be switched around by Helios itself according to what aircraft you are flying? Or an ultimate combined profile which will have all F16, F18 plus F15C, that they share the same resource folder to be efficient enough that we can switch on the fly?
I’ve been given lots of hope with the release of F15C and I’ll definitely give your F18 profile a try.
-
@jacqueslees I love your high hopes, and also longed for a one size fits all Helios profile. But I have had no luck with one profile for all. I have relied on Ice’s F-16 profile to keep @Wheelchock ‘s F-18 profile up-to-date. And Capt Zeen’s F-15 profile is sooo outdated that most functionality in BMS’ F-15 cockpit is not available. I’ve spent better part of 12 hours straight converting Capt Zeen’s profile and I barely made a dent!! If you have the time to put towards an F-15 profile you’ll be a “hero” among the BMS/Helios community.
-
@jacqueslees I had worked on a profile awhile ago that detected the airframe you flew and would switch to either F16 or F18 layout upon entering the pit. It is possible to do using a simple structure of hiding one panel that contains all the F16 stuff and one that contains all the F18 or other plane stuff.
For the F15 I did start taking CptZeens profile and converting it only to realize what @JollyFE realized. It is a lot of work and some aspects of it are pure DCS only, and it doesn’t have any UFC elements. I have abandoned that idea already.
In my opinion the hardest part of creating the profile is getting all the graphical objects together. @linknet Ice profile is just a wonderful piece of work but there so much layering of panels in there that it alone takes 10-20 seconds to load for me. I couldn’t image adding a whole other plane into the profile.
Helios does support profile switching on the fly now. You could create separate profiles for each plane and then bind a button or switch / rotary to cycle through them.
I wish I had more time to dedicate to it myself.
FYI - If you are going to use that F18 profile I made it probably needs a once over of the callbacks. Some have changed since 4.35 or .36 which is when I made that I think.
-
@Wheelchock is it possible to use the F-18’s helios profile on a “non touch” screen with the mouse?
-
@Dardo_01 Good question, but based on BMS’ coding, I want to say No. When I click off the main screen it will minimize. But feel free to give a shot.

@Wheelchock FWIW - The only major change I’ve made to your profile is the Comms Menu. SO it has stood up well to the “test of time”.

@JollyFE good to hear !
