Ancient flyer back to noob status (again) - Warthog set-up questions for BMS 4.35
-
P.S I’ve just Googled and there’s a suggestion that AL is responsible for overwriting DeviceSorting.txt.
I’ll launch BMS from the .exe and see if it makes a difference
Alan -
If you use AL you can only have a BMS-Full.key file. AL is recreating the key on every startup. So by using AL you shouldn’t make any key or axis assignments or loading a different key file in the BMS setup UI. You can use the predelifered warthog key file with AL. Just rename it to BMS-Full.key
AL is not an addition to the BMS setup its a full replacement.Gesendet von meinem SM-G930F mit Tapatalk

Hi Oakdesign, many thanks for that terrific explanation, now all is clear. I just reverted to launching via the BMS exe (ie I deleted all the AL files and reverted to the original Hub.exe) and it worked fine, nothing was re-written, but I didn’t understand why, and thanks to your explanation, now I do.
I’ve come from a long relationship with my Cougar and the Warthog is still a mystery to me. I used Dunc’s fantastic DX file with the Cougar (for years I’d laboriously programmed it with Foxy) and it was very effective, so I thought I should use the supplied DX file with the Warthog. But can I in fact use the BMS-Full key file? I notice with the Warthog Basic DX key file there are lots of unassigned kes (mainly on the throttle, but for example trim seems to have been transferred from the stick (where I’m used to it) to the throttle).

Alan, you do not need a special key file or any TARGET programming to get full use of your Warthog HOTAS (all buttons\hats\switches\axis) in BMS at all. Don’t get all wound up with the way others set it up, special keyfiles, or complicated commands that you won’t remember anyway ( … ). YOU decide what you want the switches\hats\buttons to do that makes sense to YOU, not someone else. It could not be easier than by using Alt Launcher and it’s PRESS and RELEASE functions. Switches that do not put out DX Presses (#'s) use RELEASE for that position to assign it. If you have a B&W laser and some photo paper you can make your own ghetto cover plate like me… Below is an example of AL using my bottom right (3 position) switch for all the 3 positions of the Parking Brake (and CATI - CATIII also) and a pic of the homemade paper “cover plate” I use for BMS. Once you have the template you can put whatever you want wherever you want, for any sim… Easy peasy, and it simply just works.

Hello Icer, yes I see what you mean, referring to that screenie from AL. So in other words I don’t have to use BMS Basic DX Key file and then muck about with it to move TRIM onto the stick POV, for example - I just make it from scratch using AL, right? Can’t be harder than programming a Cougar using Foxy….
I was amused the first time I plugged in the Warthog throttle and it lit up like a Christmas Tree - I like your customised plate overlay very much and when I’ve got a stable set-up I’ll make one.
My radar cursor slew kit has arrived, very nicely made and packaged, and much better than the Warthog ‘nipple’! In fact I’m so impressed with it I might get the Cougar conversion as well, which was all that was wrong with it. However moving the Cougar/Uber nxt stick is like pushing a stick of rhubarb in comparison with the Warthog. I’ll give that a go for a few weeks and see how I get in with it.
I’ll keep you (and the rest of the world who are doubtless following this saga with bated breath) posted on my progress.

AlanYes, you just load AL and do everything right in there. No need for keystroke files, no need to touch BMS settings. Once all set up the way you want got to x:\Falcon BMS 4.35\User\Config and copy the “Setup.v.100.xxxxxxxxx.xml” files to a backup folder somewhere to save a lot of time should you wipe your install out. Grab the “phonebkn.ini” and your “(Callsign).lbk” also so you don’t lose any progress or MP connections you have set up… Now we just have to get you set up in IL2 BoX and you will be all set!

If you don’t want to start from scratch you still can just rename the BMS Basic DX Key to BMS-Full.key and start AL it will then have the predefined binding of the given Basic HOTAS DX file already in place

Guys, that’s great, I’ll give it a go over the weekend. Well I do recall Icer that I was an early adopter of IL2 Sturmovik! Before that I’ve got a serious amount of studying to do to get my new A2A Constellation airborne in FSXSE, besides trying to recall how to fly an F-16 in BMS 4.35. I’ve just been looking at chapter 10 of the BMS Technical Manual on DX programming, made my brain hurt - compare the astonishing set of documents you get with BMS 4.35 with the original Falcon 4.0 manual, which I still have. I’m especially pleased we’ve still got the same theme tune…

Hi, Bigfish,
Oak and Icer are giving good advice, and perhaps my experiences will make things clearer, too. You see, for some reason my pc won’t hold throttle axis values set in AL. My MIL setting will suddenly only be 80%. It’s just a quirk of my system. So, what I do is set up everything in AL(except throttles) ,let it continually overwrite BMS-Full, and just load BMS-Full in BMS. Then , I set the throttle in the standard UI, not in AL. For whatever reason, the UI holds the axis values.
The point of this( how AL/ UI interact) is how I work with this… If I’ve changed a HOTAS button ,setting, or whatever, I always use AL for that. But, when I go into BMS from AL, my throttles won’t be set. That is because AL “overrides” the UI, and there are no throttle values set in my AL. So, how I work with this is, if I’ve not changed anything in AL I go in via the standard UI. There is no overwrite, and everything is fine.
So, IMHO,unless you use Oak’s file renaming thing, set it up once in AL, load BMS-Full, and you’re good to go. -
Hi drtbkj, thanks for that advice, much appreciated. I’m getting a much better picture of how this all works thanks to you helpful guys.
Vegas! I’m looking out of a window at sunny Downing College Cambridge this morning, my wife’s graduating this afternoon. We’re calling in at Duxford/Imperial War Museum tomorrow, look at the aeroplanes!
best wishes

Just reporting in. I’ve done the landing TE several times using the Warthog Basic DX key file, which is fine so far, except I want to move the TRIM function off the throttle POV onto the stick POV. I’ve seen somewhere how to do this so I’ll give it a go, then I’ll try out Alternate launcher for comparison. I’ve got the radar slew cursor mod to fit at some point, but not urgent.
Landing seemed a bit abrupt until I realised I had my toe brakes reversed, so full-on on landing - no wonder the jet pulled up a bit quick and was reluctant to taxi! Kunsan looks much more convincing than it used to.
I’ve got the radio presets to work in conjunction with the correct tower calls. I think it’s time to stop pressing the ‘t’ key and install VoiceAttack and SemlerPDX’s astonishing BMS software. I wondered if in some future upgrade it might be possible to have obligatory pilot read-backs for tower instructions, I got used to it in FSXSE.
Big thanks as always to the BMS developers!

AlanC’mon BigFish, time for an update! Ready for some MP campaigning? Your not getting any younger ya know! :bounce::bounce:

Getting into MP with the “big guys” can be a daunting experience (and I speak from personal experience as well :)), but I agree it’s definitely the way BMS should be enjoyed.
Have a good weekend & all the best,

Have a good weekend & all the best,
UweI see it just the other way round. When I came back to Falcon a fter years of absence I think I only spend a week just to get me back into the controls and immedialtly jumped into MP at various places such as Falcon Lounge, UOAF, Falcon-events.
Ok as a former Army officers I was quite used to overall milsim talk. But MP ramped me up way faster than spending time in SP would have done to me. -

UweLOL… I was more or less inviting him to join me for a 2 ship MP experience against the AI to help him progress a little faster, and trust me, I am NOT one of the “Big Guys”! I’m more of a “let’s go blow some stuff up and if we both land afterwards its a win” kind of player… teach him how to use the basics of WDP and MC, that sort of thing.

And I haven’t chickened out of Icer’s generous offer, I’m just making VERY slow progress, other stuff keeps interrupting. I’ll do better once those long dark nights draw in.
But while I’m here so to speak, I’ve finally done as you guys suggested and deployed BMS Alternate Launcher. Very happy with it, very easy to make a customised layout, thanks for the recommendation.
What I can’t figure is how to assign the centre position of the DF/MRM switch, you know, when you switch it back to the centre position to cancel what you were switched into. It’ll be another ‘easy when you know how’ things I expect.
Best wishes

AlanSo it’s;
D key - Dogfight Override
C key - MRM/DF Cancel
M key - MRM OverrideIf you want to use a hat just set it up for those 3 keys. If you want to use a 3 Position switch (like the one on bottom right of the throttle labeled Autopilot) its assigned easily, Switch Up for D (DX27) for ‘Dogfight Override’, Down for M (DX28.) for ‘MRM Override’, and for C ‘MRM\DF Cancel’ you assign the center position to BOTH DX27 RELEASE and DX28 RELEASE. This way when you come out of either Dogfight OR MRM overrides it cancels. Easy peasy, but to be honest I use the keyboard for these, old habits…
-
You can set up it that way but no one does. There’s a config option for DF/MO to self cancel, meaning if neither button is being held down it will return to center. Alternate Launcher should control this. You could manually edit falcon_bms.cfg but AL will probably mess with it for you back anyway.
-
Gentlemen, terrific. Frederf, that will be ‘no-one’ but Icer, it seems! I dimly recall the self-cancelling config option and never understood what it was for. Now I do! Icer, thanks for that timely reminder about keystrokes. I’m impressed at the thought of you bashing the keyboard in the heat of battle then…“Fox Three”!
Best wishes
