Questions on BDU-30
-
Recently I have been trying out the training missions on the general purpose bombs and had a lot of fun trying out the BDU-30s provided in the mission. However, I always find difficulty completing accurate assessments on the damage I have done.
The smoke patterns are not easily visible when I was on target, and when I circle back to have a closer look, the smoke from the bombs disappear.
I would therefore like to ask how does long the smoke from the BDU-30s last? Other than smoke, what else could we look for from a BDU-30 hit? I’ll hope to better plan my damage assessment trips and avoid the disappointment to circle back without finding anything.
Thanks!

@philfyw acmi recording and reviewing in Tacview is what I use. Targets of the KOTARange are visible in Tacview

Also check your cfg setting for “reduce particle system”.
I think that reduces time for smoke/fires by half
I recall being able to see dark spots on the ground where the smoke bombs hit … not sure if that is still true in U3. (May have been a graphical glitch?)

@philfyw Or recreate the same mission with Mk 82s. Much more satisfying hits!

Thanks for all the replies!
@oakdesign Thanks for the advice. However, given that BDU-33 does not really explode, does Tactview still record a hit?
@airtex2019 I have checked my config and the “reduce particle system” is not set. I guess it is just that the smoke from the bombs usually last for a minute or so? Whenever I come back for two or more minutes later the smoke tend to disappear.
@danster Nice idea! I’ll try that out as well.

@philfyw Tacview will show a hit based on when a bomb disappears and proximity to a target. It doesn’t have to explode. But KOTAR stuff I don’t think shows up in TacView as they aren’t “live” targets.
The smoke has always been long enough for me. The pattern around KOTAR is really short that it’s hard to stuff 4 airplanes in the pattern safely.

@frederf they do show up in Tacview as they are added as static objects.
