Somalia Theatre ?
-
Would be nice if BMS supported higher resolution terrain elevation grids. Someone said the L0 and L1 were interpolations of L2 data.
-
I have a question: Is it possible to mod the water colour in BMS? I have a soft spot for this theatre, but the default colour does not fit at all, I did some research for a small IL-2 mod.
If the answer is yes and someone could give me a tutorial, I’d be glad to help. Unless I have to learn rocket science before lol.Arek, great job!

You mean editing the colour in the terrain textures or editing the shaders?
-
I think I mean editing the textures so that the water has a different colour. No experiecne with shaders, so yes, I mean whatever makes the result look appear in brighter blue or any coclour we wish to be showing up.

Hi my friend Arek “Eghi”.
Well done until now with Somalian terrain ;)!
Just continue your great work.
This time i just finished the work for Panama theater and upload it, so now i will start to working the Somalian airports info from real world (due to the fact that this specific time i have a small break from my Aegean theater, waiting one of my partners to we go ahead after his part of work) and very soon i will pass you the info to place the correct type of airports in the proper and precise place in the terrain.
Just “pm” with which method do you put the airports in their position inside the terrain, in order to help you by providing correct info.
Also give me the exactly size (borders) of the terrain/map, in order to prepare for you all the other airports of other countries.@ “Polak” and “toonces”
Guys if you interested to help with any means, just contact with “pm” someone of us, “Eghi” or “Chuckles” or me.
It will be great if you want and can help us at this nice trial for Somalia theater, even with something “small”, no problem. The help is always welcomed whatever it is ;)!
Also anyone that can do something and want to join this project, just contact one of the previous guys mentioned. We will have some fun and offer to Falcon community an extra nice theater. And even if it will be incomplete, it will be used as a nice place for PvP missions :p.
With my best regards,
Nikos. -
I am in contact with EGHI, and if he needs something from me, time permitting, I will do NP.

Pertaining to Tom’s question of the color of the ocean, I think we can change to any color.I wish multitexturing was introduced to make animations. For now our waves are only static.
-
Thanks a lot Ted. Wether I find time to this year to help with basic tests or cheer from the side, I think a mixture of the screens posted by Dee-Jay with those I googled for my little mod in the other sim may be a decent guide for a little recolourization.
If it is an easy fix, which I doubt given the way textures work in Falcon, I would volunteer.
With my map modding attempts, I usually try to alter the colour of texture and the water colour with regard to the area as seen in mixed photographs.
In IL-2 this is as easy as altering 6 numbers for NVidia and Ati respectively, where Ati also stands for AMD.
If for a change in BMS every texture with water on it needs to be changed, wow, that would be a tough job. -

My friend Ted,
Even with this look and no animations, the waves are great ;)!
Also thank you that you are in touch with Arek “Eghi”!

it´s getting there - looks good so far - guess - Nikos will make the " Nav Charts "

Djibouti photos including some Somalia shots which Dee-Jay posted in this thread.
Some photos for the main land, Lake Asal and the coastal areas. Quite a number of shots, I post a smaller selection here as screens.
IMHO always good to get both a visual photo as well as a satellite impression of an area to develop/mod.Also helps built up the fun to see some locals and local animals as well…
Cheers…
I wills send those to some of the modders involved, ca 20 MB, not just these few. Will send to Chuckles and neystratiou. Ted, in case you are interested, I send them to you as well, goal was to get a broader picture of the water colour and the overall landscape look.
IMHO satellite alone is not enough for a correct representation.PS: Some nice imgages, last is not only Djibouti…

**PPS:
Must be the heat today, of course you should also check Somalia yourselfes, this is all about Djibouti. Boy, the heat. :-?
I’ll post some straight Somalia shots/links tomorrow…duh! :D**
-
Edit: Dee-Jay’s shots were also Djibouti.
OK, enough spam today, will try to get you straight Somalia water shots tomorrow. But at least I was close. -

Hey my good friend Reinhard,
this supposed to be our secret :(.
Damn, now i must kill you. Sh@t, it isn’t nice to kill a great friend of yours:rofl:
See you mate.

Gents, today I spend quite a time reseaching for Somalia coast, satellite (Google) and extensive photo search.
Again I found that using google or other satellite only imagery is a very basic and rather poor baseline for building a theatre.
The tiles may be correct, but the colours are never correct, since a lot gets lost by watching it from space view, the environmental conditions.Exception: Nowadays it is indeed possible, seen on Oahu only so far, to go one step closer in Google satellite views, means you zoom e.g. into Honolulu, then, just before street view, a 2nd very close and “in the scenery” zoom option comes into play and you literally travel through the city in a slant view tourist zoom. Check it out, THAT rocks.
If I had a say given the average (which is not possible it seems) beach, choice would be turquoise to mild blue, not too dark, definately not BMS.
Again, Ted or anyone, if I can help, please guide me, otehrwise good luck.“With a coast length of (3,980 sq mi) of Indian Ocean and the Red sea, Somalia has the longest coast in Africa, but un fortunatly most of this beutiful beachs are not being used for our advantage, with its reachness of sandy beachs, clear water, amazing reefs, and tropical islands Somalia could be discribed as the Barbados or Bahamas of Africa.
here are some of the pictures I wanted to share with you.”Folder:
http://www.mediafire.com/?14dxs3zp1znmejb
Video of one beach, really every beach looks a tad different, it seems, also depending on daylight, weather, camera.
Another quote I found somewhere in a forum dealing with Somalia (consensus usually: Beautiful, perfect travelling destination, dangerous at the time being).
"Have you ever seen Gar’ad? Eyl? Marka? Banadir? Bajuuni Islands? No? If you had, you wouldn’t think Berbera beach was the “best beach in the Somali Peninsula.”
Check them out, great shots among them. :-?
PS: The top would be repainted objects and a polulated Mogadishu. Falcon’s worst downside are unspecific houses and lack of forest-as far as “Visually seen” is meant.;)

Hi Nikos,
with friends like YOU, I sure don´t need ENEMYS
-
Just quickly…
Firstly…Thanks for Polak. Agreed to use and modify his tiles. An example here, the roads have been built into the Somalia:@crazyTom:
Matched color of the water is not problem. We can always change the color. Rivers are like this:Nikos, we will be in touch on PW.
Cheers,
EGHI……

I changed the file, little more in now,

Argh. Whatever happens the last day, I blame the sun.

My friend Arek great work out there. Bravo:
I have ready all the infos for somalian airports, so when you find some time “pm” me ;).
Also if you can (until then) just send me the borders of the map (terrain) in order to prepare the infos for airports of other countries. Thank you mate.

Hello gentlemen,
I was very busy in real life and little did. Somalia is a boring area… AISB. Most of the terrain is desert and Cate has generated a lot of segments with no features(roads, rivers, cities etc…), just sand. I try not to overdo it with variations and desert covers only 6 tiles + transitions. However, there is bad effect, when the fly height, showing the grid.
I did an experiment:
12
I think it’s easy to see the difference. The screen 1 is the texture of 1024x1024 resolution. So a lot of detail seen even from a high flight. You can also see the grid.
On screen 2 added a blurring effect, but only for mipmaps. This helps reduce the unsightly effects. Flying low, we can still see a lot of detail.
I hope, I explained clearly my idea.BTW… work of a few weeks ago:
@neystratiou,
Thank you for your e mail and I’m sorry I did not wrote back. Analyze it and try to write back as soon possible. But I think the first is to create PAK files, then you can start your work. Finally … to those who received land (alpha). You can delete it, I generated a new terrain. The size and the coordinates are the same as before. Only changed appearance, Cate received a script for the Somalia. Soon I will send you a new terrain.
Cheers,
Eghi
