Problem with devicesorting.txt

Also, I just realized you can use the launch without setup override. I did not see that option and it appears many did not.

@Icarus o.k. thanks for your suggestions, will try that (set override)

@SemlerPDX Same problem here with 4.37, no AL just Devicesorting.txt keep overwritten even when i set it to Read Only
Just no way for me to work with this… hope the problem can be solvedAre you running Falcon BMS as an admin?
(see pic in the reply above if you don’t know what that is, I don’t wanna assume either way)Does the text in the file actually change or is it only in the way things work once you are in BMS? Does the last-modified date and time change on this file after you start and later stop the Falcon BMS process?
Has this been kicked up the chain to the dev’s yet? Can’t imagine they’ve not seen this thread, not sure if one of the replies here is from one - been awhile and didn’t re-read all 40 posts above.

@airtex2019 'I dont use alternate launcher. The lines with additional controllers are not listet visibly in devicesorting list in read only status, but they are still avtive, when I test the buttons.
If devicesorting file is writable, the lines will be added…Have you ever used Alternative Launcher, even just once to check it out or see what it is like?
Asking in reference to @Icarus reply above:

I had this problem too. Once you use AL even once you cannot get rid of its settings. At least I couldn’t I was forced to reinstall BMS and chose not to put icon on desktop. I made shortcut to old launcher and only used that. Then my DX key file and device order text worked fine. I hope AL stays alternative not only launcher. I use DX key file and do not use AL and don’t really see the need for it personally.

The text file changes after exiting BMS, my changes are overwritten. date and time changes also

I never used the AL program, so that cannot be the problem.

What does setup override typically do?
Will disabling it have any other knockon effects?
-
…in 4.37 my problem is gone…no problems anymore with devicesorting and keyfile… …recreated my keyfile with AL…

It’s the function of AL where it overwrites your Viper.pop file to point to ‘BMS-Auto.key’ (the AL bindings) in addition to (over)writing the DeviceSorting.txt and axismapping.dat files … also appends a few lines to cfg, eg setting 128 button support … and enable/disable VR, etc.

W11 pro, launching without administrator right
What I notice is that even with read only activated, as soon as I exit, the file is modified to the sequence of my current active controller sequence (as visible from Game Controller). Problem being in addition, that this sequence after a restart of the PC is not fixed either and can change. Even a backup and a storage of the file in another drive therefore is not fixing the issueMaybe one solution (I will come back if it doesn’t work) is in the security tab of the properties to deny all modifications to the point that later on I cannot even open this file! (but I have a backup anyway). This leads as well when launching to a message of: “error log saved to …/Launcher_Log.txt” that I ignore and the game/sim is launching anyway
That doesn’t solve the issue as I have to restart settings the controller in the game and the TM MFD… -
@Sagal AL checks for (and turns off) the read-only flag. AL is overwriting stuff.
Sure you could set elevated-admin security flag on the file, to deny AL the right to do this.
But then it would just crash at that point. It is not hardened to expect that mode of failure.

@airtex2019 You pointed me to the good direction. I’m now launching BMS the old way (from bin/x64) and the problem is fixed. Another point with the AL was that each time even by reloading the saved key folder I had to go to advanced settings and reenter all the settings of the rudder (axis, left brake, right brake etc).
