7.1 headphones incompatible with g_fRadioBalance (Bug?)
-
Long story short, i have a headphone (Legion h500, surround sound 7.1) that is connected via usb port and im unable to get the full effect of the feature gFradioBalance were UHF comms will only be transmitted on the left ear and VHF on the right (vice versa depending on the value)
Issue is that on windows sounds control panel, it only shows 7.1 so theres no way for me to set it to stereo (i’ve tried to look around for fixes aswell as legion driver software, no luck)
a fellow by @GhastlyTT tried to also troubleshoot my issue but as he and i came to conclusion, its fitting to report this problem in hopes that the devs can find a fix on their end as we’ve tried all solutions (that we came across so far)
here is a bit of the convo between me and ghastly https://forum.falcon-bms.com/topic/24033/does-g_fradiobalance-still-work that might be of helped bring more context to this issue…
TLDR : if u have a 7.1 headphones thats connected through usb adapter into the pc and you have no way to change windows sound to stereo, g_fRadioBalance won’t work (single player, campaign tested)

Ok let’s put things straight for everyone (my answer will be broader than your post)
-
Radio Balance only works if you you have a stereo heaset (I am well aware since my headset has 2 sound cards and one is mono…)
-
This setting doesn’t work with IVC (IVC has its own parameter in the client.ini file)
-
It worked in 4.35, 4.36, during dev testing and in 4.37
So for me, it is not a BMS issue but more a configuration issue of your headset…

@hellsguard
bit offtpic, but bear with me for a sec.
Not that I want to discourage anyone, but did you really think before buying any of those “market tricks” 7.1 headphones?How can you play 7.1 channel surround sound on stereo headphones - 2 channels/speakers/drivers?
Those are all some software-driven effects / channel mixing / delay / reverb… etc, somekind of DSP/ASP (digital sound processing / advanced sound processing) - AND - also questionable if on chip (hardware) - more probably just software effects.
Cards, hardware alone, probably is 8 channel (7.1) as today it is not a such miracle - but simulating 7.1 on 2 speaker is … a miracle - Market trick.
Tho, they may sound nice… that is OK, but is not REALLY a 7.1 headphones… just effects… crap.
Only such real “surround” headphones (that I know) were produced by Sony some years ago. - They really had 5 speakers inside left/right - in headphones alone… inside… so not just 2 speakers (L/R) but 10 in total.
God only knows why I haven’t bought them then… they were priced almost as a used car.So, when you think about it , do you really need 7.1 (market trick) headphones ?
–just 2 kopeyke

@white_fang binaural audio is extremely well implemented today, and even the most basic headsets sold today are marketed as “Surround” because of software implementations already being baked into consoles and PC . It’s not a gimmick, but it requires a surround output from the application in order to work. No one is packing 3 speakers per ear up anymore because it’s unnecessary to get the same effect binaural processing provides.

@GhastlyTT
Well, now you mentioned, … yes, I’ve heard some (binaural) stereo samples… - not really a news, tech exist for a decade or two at least … - and really, they sound pretty much “surround” to me.Of course, we know that are really effects at play, … but… they do resemble surround sound pretty much.
But can it really replace multichannel … I’m afraid, even I can’t tell… - there are more serious “surround lovers” then me
-
@white_fang Got it as a hammy down lol
-
@MaxWaldorf Sorry im not familiar with these tecchy stuff but are you saying ur headphones also only shows up 7.1 on windows sound setting but somehow you made bms think ur using stereo? what did you do?
-
@hellsguard
I’ll answer you this.
Open old multimedia control panel , right click on device and select “Configure speaker” …
You guess? - select “Stereo” and voila. - of course you loose surround in all of windows … but as a test… give it a try
I actually prefer another solution, as my card has “downmixing” - your 7.1 headphones should have the same, - I just select type of output to headphones in (Audigy control panel) and all multichannel surround is “donwmixed” to stereo - the same principle your 7.1 headphones should work - as you have 8 channel input - donwmixed to 2 channel (stereo)
Cheers
-just to give you visual, kinda, way is it supposed to look (different for anyone) - I then select CMSS option then DSP chip is taking care of 8 chn downmix to stereo headphones with appropriate effects (delay, reverb etc…)

Just to add to this thread a little bit. This is the same issue that I’m having with my Pimax VR headset. The Pimax requires Windows audio to be set to 7.1 otherwise I get no sound at all.
-
@white_fang This was the first thing i tried before posting this thread but like i said in my original post, i sadly don’t have this option on my end.

@hellsguard
owww… damn, sry missed that.
Well, then you’re in a world of hurtSeems , there’s no alternative then… it is 7.1 fixed, and no (easy, if at all) way to change that.
Now, outhere, there are some “advanced” mixers like:
https://vb-audio.com/Voicemeeter/banana.htm
… which may help, but setting it up is always card (device) specific… and I cannot guarantee easy success, if any at all.
Try play with it a bit… see if this can help.That software above, can do channel (down)mixing and much more… it is software DSP in essence., but again, setting it up , you’re mostly on your own…
I can try to help with some of the options, but as said, mostly is card specific… what your card and driver allows you to tweak.Anyway, Good luck.
