FOX 2 unable to track J-20 head on
-
Hello everyone, I am still new to ECM system, so sorry this might sound like a dumb question.
I done multiple tests in TE, I found out that FOX 2 missiles are unable to hit J-20 head on. The missile won’t track J-20 head on, even if the AIM-9X is giving me tone and the HUD shows I am in range, but the fox 2 missiles will still go dumb right after the launch. The J-20 isn’t dropping any flares at the time, and I have tried AIM-9X, AIM-9M and python 5, all same result.
This doesn’t happen against other 4 gen fighters, I can shoot them up to 8 nmi no problem. So is this part of the 5 gen ECM feature?

@gmcustomsauces Fox-2s are heat seeking missiles, So are not effected by ECM. They can however be effected by aircraft that do things to mitigate their IR signature from certain angles, I don’t know if the J20 does this though. I’m sure @Radium can chime in about how this is set-up in the sim.
Although I do know that a lot of “Stealth” aircraft have put a lot of effort into heat management to reduce thier IR signature, specially from the front.
Below you can see an example of an F-16 and F-35 both taxing in after a flight. Notice how much cooler the skin of the F-35 is.

Let’s not mix topics here…
FOX 2 = IR
So no ECM here…Now most of the FOX2 are rear aspect only… So what type of fox 2 did you have???

He said he tried AIM-9X, AIM-9M and python 5.

Yes, IR characteristics in BMS were “revised” since that SU-24 shotdown in Syria - AIM-9X miss/spoofed - Amraam did the trick
I like this new approach better. Now (since) IR is influenced even by weather, atmosphere - clouds - which is totally legit. Now, head-on shots vs 5th gen buckets, even with IIR (9x, Python5)…
Those planes are actually designed to have much minimized IR footprint then any previous gen. (as part of IRCM abilities). - exactly what @SOBO-87 posted on those pics.
Remember even F-22 exhausts, it is unique.
So, IIR head-on shots on 5th gen… very much a dice… 50/50. (you will probably have more luck in Vegas).Don’t get me wrong, those missiles are state of the art, Python 5 - off bore 180 back shot - but those planes are also.
Height (cold) and speed, would be a factor here (for IIR), more speed + air friction = more heat, but since friction is less with height… and all those planes “supercruise” w/o afterburner - well, don’t know for JSF(F-35) - but SU-57, J-20 can.
Better stick with rear shots, if can’t, run … not everyone is Pete Mitchell in Iranian F-14
Cheers

Hi, I understand what you mean, but I still have a few questions.Since the Syrian jet wasn’t a 5 gen stealth fighter, so if the BMS were revised base on that event, then the AIM-9x is going to miss other non-stealth aircraft quite often.
More over, after shooting 20+ fox 2 missiles at J-20 head on. None of them hit, so the chance is much lower than 50/50. Unless I’m super bad luck, otherwise shooting head on is probably impossible to hit a 5 gen.

Yes, I see… well, it shouldn’t be impossible, just way harder then against any conventional planes. - just stick with rear shots … waste of ammo. - Let me put it this way, - If you manged to hit 5th gen head-on, then pilot made a mistake. - think this is closer to truth.
Also, could be they maybe over-modeled it, (IR signature) … but better to see for myself before saying anything like that… - no info avail, must understand this.
It is data “mostly” by assumption, … or, in any way restricted … even false on purpose.
We can try send email to Chengdu , I guess they’ll get “the joke”I remember old Eidos sim “JSF” from '97 …(still have it, great soundtrack, audio cd)… hitting a target with missile there (aim9x/120C) was harder then in any sim. - there were really "miss"iles … also ai was playing kinda smart, if not attacking, then constantly beaming with decoys. Hit percentage was really low, about 1/4 , 1/5 … but even you (F-32/F-35) could get hit if not careful - doing nothing/ignoring alerts.
