Original Quest support in VR?
-
Hi,
Has anyone got VR to work with an original Oculus Quest?
I am not expecting great results, but I am curious to try it out. I realise it is not on the tested list in the VR guide, but I am hoping there is still a way.
- I have followed the VR guide in the BMS docs.
- Steam VR (beta 1.25.3) is installed
- I have set “set g_nVRHMD 1” in the config file
- I have rebooted the PC after doing all this
- I have followed the suggestions here https://forum.falcon-bms.com/topic/24106/guide-for-starting-the-game-in-vr to make sure that “Steam VR Beta Update” is selected
I do not see the option for “Enable Virtual Reality” in the Launcher.
Thanks,
-
@Pegasus82 far less familiar with the original Quest unfortunately, and the Google searches mostly come up with Quest 2 of course. My questions would be:
A. how is it connected to the PC (apparently with software updates a USB3.0 corded connection may have been possible)?
B. Do you have the Oculus software installed on the PC?
C. Does it work with other games on your PC? -
@Snake122 Hi and thanks for the questions,
A. It is connected to the PC via a USB3.0 cable, very much the same as the Quest 2.
B. I have the Oculus software installed, but the link I provided in the opening post suggests that I should probably be using Steam VR rather than the Oculus software
C. I have got it to work (quite a while ago) with DCS. -
@Pegasus82 for my Rift S and Quest 2, it basically works the same as DCS. For me, you need to turn on the Quest Link inside the Quest’s own VR OS after you have the USB3.0 cable connected. The Oculus Software gets opened when I connect my Quest 2 if I remember correctly. With a SteamVR game, it will then run too. You should have both software suites installed. Since you followed the SteamVR install instructions, check that you have the PC Oculus software too, that will allow the PC and the Quest to both detect each other.

@Snake122 sorry to hijack but would love to know your personal opinion of the Rift s vs Quest 2. I have not used VR before but have read alot of people actually prefer the Rift s for PCVR. I would only be using for BMS. Your thoughts?
-
@1508AD Rift S is the easier button for PC setup wise. But overall I like the Quest 2 in so many more ways: better resolution, FOV, stand alone VR option, etc. I haven’t even connected the Rift S again to test in BMS, I don’t think it has been connected to my PC in about 9 months.

I changed SteamVR to use the “oculus_win7and8” beta rather than the Steam beta. I still do not even have the option in the Launcher to “Enable Virtual Reality”.
I guess it is just a no-go.

@Pegasus82 the quest 1 should work just fine. At least one discord user is using it. It’s just like a q2 in terms of software and Vr implementation just with fewer pixels.

My OG Quest works with BMS
I’m not doing anything other than what has been recommended here -
@Badger in the SteamVR settings, have you selected “Steam Beta” or “oculus_win7&8”?
Do you have the “Enable Virtual Reality” option in the Launcher?
Have you set the command-line switch “force_steam_VR”? as mentioned in the link from my OP?

I don’t even see those as options

Yes

No
I don’t see BMS in the Steam Room. I have to peek under the headset until I get to the main UI.

Yes
Well that is interesting. According to page2 of the BMS VR Guide, all I need to have that option available is for SteamVR to be installed. I definitely have it installed, and it works.
As said earlier, I have enabled VR in the BMS Config file too.
Not sure what I am missing.
-
@Pegasus82 you also have the oculus software running too, right?

Yes, that starts as soon as the Quest is plugged in to the PC (1)
2: I put on the headset and I am in the Oculus VR “room”.
3: I enable Oculus Link when asked.
4: I start SteamVR on my PC and the headset view transitions to the SteamVR room.
5: When I start the BMS Launcher, it does not have the “Enable Virtual Reality” option.I already have set g_nVRHMD 1 in my “Falcon BMS.cfg” file
-
@Pegasus82 Just a guess now but, try putting set g_nVRHMD 1 in your Falcon BMS USER.cfg

@Pegasus82 this may be a completely stupid question, but at the bottom of the launcher, does it say falcon BMS 4.37? The launcher will pick up whatever versions it can find in the registry

No such thing as a stupid question, but yes, I have made sure that I am using 4.37 and not 4.36 and the UI is the new one so I am 100% sure that it is 4.37
-
@Pegasus82 the UI bit is irrelevant - you can use the new one to launch 4.36… down the bottom to the left of launch there’s a white box that lists all the versions of BMS the launcher can see on your machine. That’s the bit I was wondering if you’d double checked.

I meant the 2D BMS UI, not the Launcher UI. I have been using the Alt Launcher since several versions of BMS, and I know the selection down the bottom right of the Launcher to choose which version to start (I have options for 4.36 and 4.37)
-
@Pegasus82 ok!
