Solved BMS 4.37 does not run on Windows 7 SP1
-
The 4.37 BMS -User-Manual clearly states on page 9
that BMS is compatible to Windows 7 and 11.
I have tried everything under the sun but I cannot get this to run on Windows 7 x64 SP1.
I have installed the Platform Update KB2670838 which accordingly to MS should give me DirectX 11.1
I installed .NET Framework 4.6.1 which BMS said is required.
When pressing the Launch button I get error message:
‘The program can’t start because d3dx9_43.dll is missing from you computer.’
When pressing RTT Client I get error message:
'The program can’t start because api-ms-win-crt-string-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer.Seems to be a DirectX Problem, but I have no idea how to fix this and why it pop’s-up because I think my DirectX is correctly installed.
Any help is greatly appreciated. -
Windows7 SP1 with the platform update(do you have that?) should work. Care was taken to limit used features to D3D_FEATURE_LEVEL_11_0. That’s also why during install you are asked to install the June 2010 version of DX11 instead of a more recent version
-
you don’t have dx installed.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109had the same on win10 new setup.
It must be in the installer you just have to tick it and then continue the install. -
@911KK0 not sure anyone has tested 4.37 on Win7 (or Win8, or 8.1… which went end-of-life last week) so you might be in uncharted waters.
in a recent thread re 4.36 someone reported success after getting
d3dx9_43.dll
D3COMPILER_47.dll
d3dx11_43.dllpresumably by downloading latest DirectX runtime?
not sure what else might be missing, or not working … probably forget about VR

I have Win7SP1 , BMS 4.37 works fine for me.
Win 10 wolud make my machine unusable.I don`t like it eihter. -
Confirm as well, BMS works on Windows 7. AL does not work well under Windows 7, that is one reason I don’t use it. Apparently it was compiled with some SDK for Windows 10 and has some incompatibilities with Windows 7.
I try not to use Windows 10 as much as I can because it is a really shitty OS and it would put a lot of strain on my System.

I don’t know of any reason that it shouldn’t … but I have not tested it.
It’s built with .NET Framework 4.6 … Win7 supports up to .NET 4.8 … which was released before Win7 end-of-life, so I think most Win7 systems should have it, unless auto updates disabled.
If it’s missing something other than that, I’d be curious to know what error message you get … or if it crashes, what the log file says.

@airtex2019 It starts but I can’t activate the checkbox “Launch without any setup override” which is essential for me.
The box would simply not activate. I did not test much of the rest of the GUI as using it destroys my settings.
Don’t get me wrong, the GUI looks nice and for sure is a step forward, but at this moment it is useless for me.
Max mentioned somewhere that it was compiled with the SDK for Windows 10. Can’t find his post right now.

@Kisakuru you can run old launcher, it’s still there in Falcon folder.
-
@Kisakuru Working theory – it’s hanging at startup, trying to fetch news from falcon-bms.com / falcon-lounge.com. (Because .NET on Win7 uses old SSL 3 / TLS 1.0 connections by default… which most of the world has moved on from, over past several years. I’m actually amazed much of anything still works on Win7, when I think about this.)
I don’t know if there’s a way to bypass that… might be interesting to just wait 2 minutes to see if it eventually times-out and responds. Or maybe unplug net cable / turn off wifi. Neither is a great solution, but would confirm the problem.

GOT IT ALL WORKING!
It was a pretty rough ride. Did about 4 - 5 complete installations from scratch with Win7 SP1 and Win10 for comparisons, different PC setup’s, sent two SSD’s to heaven for good and googled countless hours.
So here it is:
Install: Win 7 x64 / SP1
Install: Windows Platform Patch KB2670838
Install patches to resolve open issues of your PC
Install: .NET Framework 4.6.1 (Offline Version)
Install: VC++ 2015 - 2019 Redist Package
Install: DirectX June 2010 SDK
Install: BMS 4.37
Install drivers for your hardware SSC, DEDCapture, …Thanks a lot guys for all your feed-back and response. Hope this will keep the great Win7 alive.

There is an update to change the crypto suite used on it, but not very common. TLS 1.3 is not supported on Win 7 except via 3rd party libraries (which of course, Windows can’t use).

@Tiger-0
Everything still works with TLS1.2 fallback , …at least for few years.
So (probably) you can still even netbank with win7. -

I must add, that my flying machine, based on Win7, NEVER gets to see any network nor the internet at all. I have not installed Ethernet or any of all these network security performance suckers. I sacrified all this for speed… Speed… SPEED.
You wouldn’t believe how fast such a machine can be. Booting up is a matter of 5 seconds. I get really nice frame rates out of my ASUS RoG Z77 i7 with my trusty old ASUS Strix GTX970. Driving 4 + 1 Displays. In the 4.37 Alternate Launcher i get the message ‘Error reading from RSS feed’ but no delay at all. -
