OpenKneeboard Tutorial and Tips
-
@rubbra Yep same - I also added it to games settings like so
-
I haven’t yet experimented with output from ezboards to open knee board but will have a go.
I’m surprised you can’t read the knee boards though - I’m only on a rift s and have no issues at all.

Wonder if it’s a G2 thing - text is unreadable for me too on default KBs

First up, go to settings and bind show/hide, next page, previous page, next tab and previous tab. You probably will also want recentre - I have bound to the same as BMS VR recentre. These will be the commands you use in BMS to interact with the knee boards.
I want to bind these to a shifted layer in my HOTAS, can’t seem to find a way to do so.
After that, you can just add files to your tabs/sections, or you can go back to settings and add new tabs, which can be created from on disk folders or files.
This is what I’m trying to find out how to do exactly. Can you walk me through it? Like I want to add the KTO charts, for example.
-
@Atlas shifted layer - you can do it but only if the shift key is on the same device as the button you want to shift.
Walk you through - yes, will post some screenshots when I’m next near the computer.
-
@rubbra I have my pinky lever on the stick as shift and was planning to map it to the hats on my throttle. I guess I can map it to the DMS/TMS hats instead.
-
@delenda If you change the rendering API under OpenKneeboard, Settings, Games, Game Setting from your quoted Steam VR to Auto-detect then you will be able to use your openkneeboard in VR and in non-VR modes.

The replies you already have should see you on your way to installing and operating OpenKneeboard in Falcon BMS.
Regarding the question of displaying the briefing:
- Create a new tab in OpenKneeboard and point it to the file /Falcon BMS 4.37/user/Briefings/Briefing.txt
- When you are in the mission screen within Falcon BMS, click on the Briefing icon and click on “Print” at the top of the resulting screen. This will refresh the Briefing.txt file with the latest briefing, and it will echo to OpenKneeboard.
You need to check your settings under Launcher, config, General, Briefing/debriefing to get it to work properly. “1. Briefing output to file” must be ticked, “2. Append new briefings” and “3. HTML briefings” should be blank and “Debriefing output to file” is your choice (you could set up another tab for this file if you wish).
The Briefing.txt file page width is a bit wide for Open Kneeboard so you get wrap-around, but it is still readable.
If you want a nice kneeboard of the comms ladder then
3. Create a new tab in OpenKneeboard and point it to the file /Falcon BMS 4.37/user/Briefings/DTC_Comm.txt
4… When you are in the mission screen within Falcon BMS, click on the Data Cartridge icon, go to COMM tab, click on Comm Plan then Save then Load and lastly Print . This will refresh the DTC_Comm.txt file with the latest briefing, and it will echo to OpenKneeboard. -
If you would prefer your OpenkneeBoard to be at eye level and to one side (similar to DCS) then change the following within OpenkneeBoard settings:
- “Virtual Reality” tab, heading “position”
- “Vertical Distance from eye level” set to 0.0m
- “Left to right position” set to 0.25m
- “Forward position” set to 0.5m
- “Pitch” slider set to 90deg
These work on my HP Reverb G2. Other headsets might require some tweaking.

@Kiwispirits nice, thanks for writing this up - I felt guilty not getting near my computer to do it last night!
-
Is it possible to set up OpenKneeboard on the 2D Main Monitor with a show/hide option?
-
-
Mhh it would be Cool to insert the Page generated from the Weapon Delivery planner into the Kneeboard. How can i achive this ?
-
@Kiwispirits thanks for the tip. I only use it in VR though, so I’m all good.
-
@Kiwispirits Is there a way to have folders and sub-folders or tabs and sub-tabs? I would like to be able to have the charts in OpenKneeboard but each one having it’s own tab, while useful, would mean scrolling through a lot of tabs to get to the desired charts.

It seems that it will only do a shifted layer with the pinky button and not the paddle switch?
-
@Atlas Not an expert on OpenKneeboard, but I have never seen mention of sub folders or sub tabs.
If you used an image editor of some sort, perhaps you could cut and paste the individual image in the map files into one file?
If you get this to work, could you post your process please, as I would like to do the same thing but I could not find the default maps and pilot docs for the BMS built-in kneeboards?
-
@Atlas I’ve attempted to achieve something like this by merging all of the ROK airport charts into one PDF file, and then adding PDF chapters for easier navigation. I simply use Window’s Print to PDF function for the first step, which does result in a massive PDF file size, and you need 3rd party software to label individual chapters.
I soon realized that accessing chapter navigation isn’t that feasible while in VR. Now I’ve reverted to only adding the chart folder of relevant airports as part of my pre-flight routine, and removing them when done. It’s not too much trouble flying in and out of Ginpo for an entire campaign, but I’d imagine it being annoying if you jump between campaigns and TEs a lot.
-
@AXiAMWoLFE How do we access the airport charts and other files please? I had a look through the Falcon BMS folder/subfolders and could not seem to find them.

X:\Falcon BMS 4.37\Docs\
There you find multiple folders.
BMS Manuals are in “00 BMS Manuals”.
Charts are in “03 KTO Charts”. -
@Micro_440th Thankyou, found them .
