A question about IFF implementation
-
According to the manual there are three iff states, green indicates correct answer on selected mode, yellow square indicates incorrect answer and no answer means… no answer.
Considering there are four different iff modes, is it possible to aircraft give correct answer on one mode and incorrect or nothing at others in BMS? in order to consider it friendly should i look if it gives correct answer in every single mode or one positive return is enough?

Two answers - 1) yes. 2) it depends.

@Stevie so it isn’t something you can absolutely rely on unless bogey passes on every single mode successfully. gotta make the awacs call i guess…

@fegeleinn acft can interrogate at different modes as desired or in all modes
Label as friendly , unknown, hostile, etc depends on the ROE matrix, and that takes into account many things, not only IFF. -
Hey,
actually positive Mode IV reply means most of the time friendly (according to ID-matrix).
For hostile ID, lack of any IFF (spades) is usually not enough.
As tiag mentioned, it all depends on the ID-matrix which is layed out in the theater specific ROE.And btw, you can NOT get a positive reply on all IFF modes. See what the different IFF modes mean.
Modes I, II & 3 are mainly for airspace control agencies which have a list of all flights/aircraft and their respective iff modes (ATO). So they can check if the mode I, II, III are correct. A fighter pilot doesn’t have that list or the time to check it.cheers

@fegeleinn - that’s the “it depends” part. Rules of Engagement will dictate what has to pass and what doesn’t…so you have to pay attention at the brief.
