am saying “civil aviation” because I don’t know how it works in the military.
In military, checklists are known by heart.
Emergency items are performed as “to do” list, then … when time permits, checklist is consulted to ensure no item have been forgotten. -
@Dee-Jay in the US Military memorizing checklists is a no-go, they are required to be followed.

We perform the “scan flow” first (by heart) then we read the paper (or electronic) appropriate checklist to verify wether everythins has been done.
Emergency checlists, on the other hand, are “Read and Do” excpet for memory items.
