Boresight and Cycling from A/G to A/A
-
Hi, I have a doubt about the “borsight” procedure when using the AGM-65D. Yesterday we were doing a mission and after aligning the TGP with the WPN and setting the boresight on both pylons we had to switch to A/A due to some threats. When I returned to A/G the ground objectives in TGP were aligned, but the WPN was not, furthermore the FALL LINE was all on one side of the HUD. Out of 4 throws only one hit. Second question: if you press CZ will the AGM settings be reset?
Thank you

In the training manual on maverick, you are asked to boresight, then you leave & go to NAV. It is also requested to CZ right after the boresight operation.
So, from this doc, I dounderstand that neither CZ nor leaving A/G mode should delete the boresight.
Anyone could confirm this understanding ? -
I use Mavs a lot. After I complete my boresight procedure, I DMS over to the TGP, break locks with TMS-Down, then switch Master Modes. This cancels any handoff info. Go back to AG mode and lock something with the TGP to verify the Maverick slews and handoff is complete “C”. I then repeat the mode switch and power down the Mavs. Pressing CZ has never caused me any problems with the Mavs remaining aligned with the TGP. With the BLF pegged to one side of the HUD. The TGP was still SPI. On the bottom right of the HUD you will find how many degrees you are offset from that location along with the slant distance.

After boresight you should switch both (or as many stations as you have) through boresight/vis mode (not to be confused with boresighing per se), and allow the missiles sensors to break lock with the bore-sighted targets and align with the Hud. Other wise when you come to use them they are likely pointing to or locked onto, the items you bore-sighted with , and may take some time to align with your TGP sensor, which they will only do when you designate the new target.
I try to explain this in the video below…

Anyone could confirm this understanding ?Correct. Boresight is never deleted only overwritten and only when “BSGT” OSB is pressed. It sounds like you either didn’t boresight or the LOSes were mismatched when the boresight was saved.

@tdr As per the manual 4.37.3 page 177….after boresighting, follow the SOP……TMS down….Wide FOV…….CZ (cursor zero). All cursor slews are cancelled and you’re ready to go.

The Mavs may be still locked on the boresight target (not actually tracking, but trying to track). Press TMS down and they should look at the SPI.

@Bayonet @sungad
Missing steps are, after full boresight completed.- Make sure WPN is SOI, (should be if done nothing else after boresight)
and for each Mav station/rack - Unlock (TMS down), MSL step
As explained this does not guarantee weapons are aligned with your aircraft, and although you might lock a target with the TGP, you may loose valuable time waiting on the maverick to slew into the HUD. Best to cycle through boresight or VIS mode for each after you have ‘bore-sighted’, and before you reach the target area.

@Fish44 All good advice. I particularly like how, in your video, you select suitable buildings for bore sighting with the HUD in VIZ and scrolling the TD. Effective in daylight only, of course, but handier perhaps that using the FCR and TGP.

@Bayonet I usually move one of my steerpoints onto a small (!) town that’s in the right direction and use the buildings there to boresight.

+1

@sungad Yep, that’s the best method. Planning a steer point on a convenient cluster of buildings avoids having to waste time searching with the FCR which then nearly always entails a course change to line up.
As shown by @Fish44 in his video, as I reference above, on approaching that steer point, using VIZ to quickly bring a building into the TGP is very efficient.

You don’t even have to mess with your steerpoints-- I don’t. I just use Recon on the 2D map, find a good building anywhere along the path, and PPT-designate it as PPT-90. Upon approach, switch to steerpoint 90 and <BOOM> there it is centered on your TGP screen.

I know that I could do that, but I’m honestly too lazy to go into recon view, pick a building and check if it’s unique enough to pick the right one with the Mav. Might be genuinely more effort than doing it in 3D. I mean, if I spend less time boresighting, I could use more time acceleration, but it feels like less effort when I do the final search for the right building in 3D.

Fun little game to play. See how fast you can boresight the Mavs, and then get back to NAV and your flight plan.
