The appetite for an F117?

@SOBO-87 That “classified / declassified” thing makes cofusion always. I wonder how the team manage this. You can find manuals on the net freely, but said that those manuals still under US law and restricted to distribution or export from the US.

Go for it @SOBO-87

I’d say my appetite for an F-117 is stronger than for F-15 (except E).
Of course, avionics wise it would be a project like the Harrier. But I would count the Nighthawk as the perfect platform for such a project, since you don’t need radar, RAW, jammer and such things so it should be rather simple.
The main problem is, that there is no dynamic RCS (I guess?). If there would be one, F-35 would have a stealth issue from behind, F-22 not. Also, I don’t think opening bomb bays has any effect (?) -
Ok so the general feeling seems positive. I think I’ll definitely start something and see where it goes. No promise on timeline but I’ll start its own thread when I have something to show. I have a couple of projects on the go at the moment that are non-BMS related. And it will start after those. I have a little bit of time for getting some more references and I’m going to attempt to get some measurements from a real cockpit which will really help. And maybe get my 3D scanner in there. Hehe.
I do have a few other questions related to BMS.
Poly limits?
Clearly the exterior isn’t going to trouble the poly limits that much since it only has about 10 polygons IRL. but talking seriously what is a sensible poly limit for exterior and cockpit with 4.38 in mind? Its going to have the worlds most detailed landing gear!Normal maps?
Is 4.38/PBR bringing Normal mapping as a capability? I’m not sure if Normal Mapping it’s tied integrally with PBR so I don’t know if that is a dumb question, but I have no idea about the BMS graphics engine so any input from the devs would be great. Love me some normal mapping magic. That’s about all I can think of for the moment. Thanks for your input all!

@SOBO-87 - So…I used to work with an actual former F-117 Test Pilot. I already knew better than to ask him any questions when I met him…
…and I can guarantee you that you will be guessing…at everything.
-
@SOBO-87 generally stay below 250k, and yes u4/4.38 will have normal maps and armw and albedos
-
@SOBO-87 I think you can’t go wrong if you do a new 3D model. In the worst case it will use F16 avionics, but still better than nothing. I’m waiting the U4 update and the blender exporter.

Except the RCS myth. At 11:50.
The RCS of the F-117 was very low even with very high aspect.
While there is a floating myth on the Net that stealth planes have low RCS in a narrow region… This was measured it can be calculated back by the known parameters of the SNR-125.Except the edge and maybe ~100% tail reflection the RCS of the plane is in the 0.001 m2 range.

I like the idea - With F4 development its always been F-16 avionics. Who cares though, be realistic in thought “Classified is just that”, although just the experience to have other aircraft is amazing in sim and strategic role-play especially as sim develops and theaters. I foster the concept of further aircraft development. Dissimilar air combat training for starters right. I actually need to spend more time in it lol
-
@hiuuz i think you should make the model first :D, i didnt use the exporter until i was done with my mesh
-
@Reaperdog1 F-15C was just the start
-
@Stevie I’ll be honest. I don’t really care lol. If the jet had secret capabilities beyond what is known then the only people who would know are people who wouldn’t be able to tell.
If you’re suggesting that there is no valid information out there about either the systems or the performance of the jet then I would respectfully disagree.
It’s not like it’s some magic interceptor that has a radar with a classified range that can track a classified number of targets and reach a classified speed. It’s a little black Dorito with the aerodynamics of a house brick, that sneaks in subsonic, drops two LGBs, and sneaks back out. The scope of what it does is very narrow and the technology of the time they were doing it is pretty basic compared to what you’re dealing with these days with datalink, IRST, sensor fusion etc etc.

@okayasugf 250k for external and cockpit combined? or 250k for the external and another 250k for the cockpit?

But I-Hawk mentioned that after U4 this can be higher. -
guys with the new bml format and pbr things are not like the old days where after decades things were mature enough to say in numbers the tris limitations per model category.
The general rule is to use the minimum u can. Don’t just add tris for the fun of it or because you want crazy details like you will see an antenna from 5cm away.
So keep it sane.
Now guys that don’t actually know or are newbs or need a guideline then use the old one and when you reach it start to be very conservative when you pass it in order not to skyrocket it.
For guys that want to get crazy in details I would suggest to use the High to Low poly workflow.
U use the low poly for the Falcon gfx engine and the High poly to bake the basic mesh maps when you start to PBR the Low poly model.
This way you can give super details to your model BUT it has logical limitations… for example with this workflow you can’t make it look like there is an antenna that sticks out of the fuselage for 20cm. -
@Arty good reply and of course I will use the minimum tris I can and be sensible. High-low process is my plan as well.
-
@SOBO-87 cockpit is a separate model, it can be as much as you need(in sensible terms)
-
That is prety good my dear sir.Do you need the F117 pilot handbook?Hope can help you sir

I’ve been fortunate enough to chat to a couple of F-117 pilots and pick their brains about the jet as well.
Dude…?
Lucky man…! A couple of anecdotes would be cool…!
