Quest 2 vs Quest 3
-
I’m looking into getting into pcvr, and I’ve been considering getting something on the quest series. I’ve heard the quest 2 is value for money. My system specs are:
Ryzen 9 5500hx, rtx 3050 4gb(laptop), 32gb ram(3200mhz). It’s basically the Asus ROG strix g15 laptop. I’ll also be considering to upgrade to a desktop PC next year but for now I’m travelling alot this year so do take that into account. If not you can recommend any other headset which can run on my hardware -
Hi @okayasugf
Mmmh, hard to say
Having in mind your actual system I would go for Quest 2, second hand you can get them (at least in Spain) for 150-200€ used (in good state).
One year from now or whenever you upgrade your desktop PC, I’d sell the Quest 2 (maybe you would loose 100€ or so) and get Quest 3 or, possibly, some other headset that’s out with better bang for the buck.
Who knows, maybe by the time you upgrade your desktop PC, Quest Pro 2 are out, or Pico 5 maybe?!?
Just my opinion, as said, hard to say. It pretty much depends on your situation (and budget).
With your system and saying you’ll be travelling a lot, I’d go for the cheap alternative. Quest 2 is not the best headset right now (it’s highly surpased by Pico4 and Quest3).
But it doesn’t mean it’s a bad headset, it’s more than enough for having fun with BMS.
In the end, if you are traveling, I imagine you won’t have a HOTAS with you, ain’t you??Regards!

The difference is NOT incremental. The Quest 3 is a HUGE jump in every measurable aspect. Unless you’re money-limited, the answer is a no-brainer.

Let me put it this way — I come from owning a HTC Vive, then a Reverb G2… at which point I struggled to spot the tanker on the AAR TE when the tanker is clearly visible when playing on a monitor. I then got a Pimax Crystal which was just a headache and I don’t even remember being able to spot the tanker either. The picture on the Crystal is better than on the G2, but I can’t explain why I still had trouble spotting the tanker. Mind you, the headset was considered faulty by Pimax tech support in the end so maybe that was the issue and a fully-working Crystal would’ve allowed me to spot the tanker at TE start.Anyway, I now have the Quest 3 (never tried the Quest 2 so can’t compare) and it just… works. I have the Virtual Desktop app on my PC, purchased through Steam and got BMS working through there. Since I’m experimenting with some passthrough and hand-tracking mods, I had to buy Virtual Desktop again on the Meta Store, but that’s a different story altogether. I digress… with the Quest 3, I can spot the tanker on TE start which is maybe 7-8nm away.
I’m also enjoying my flights without having to worry about how the cable is flowing behind me and getting caught up between my back and the chair. I’m also just now exploring some standalone apps when I just totally ignored all of that before.
And here’s the biggest plus — I can move around my house, go grab a drink, a snack, and “take care of biznez” without having to take the headset off.
Now as a new Quest 3 user, I have little knowledge on how the magic happens between PC and headset especially over a wireless connection. It could all be black magic! So no clue about your PC specs vs. expected headset performance, so maybe someone else can correct me here, but unless really strapped for cash, can you not buy a Quest 3 and just run with lower eye candy specs?

@oleuzop have that, just barely fits in my luggage (if I don’t decide to buy new a new wardrobe lol), thanks for the suggestion!
