Campaign and A-G Missions
-
Hi Folks,
Still hacking my way though learning how to be effective…
When assigned a SEAD mission with CBU’s…
The mission dictates flying an altitude of 15K or so… That get’s me killed every time… Am I free to ignore these altitude assignments and do “on the deck” approaches with my EMCON status “quiet” ? I’ve been trying the Israeli campaign and every time I cross the border at altitude - I am shot…
Also - I’ve pretty much figured out - I think - CCIP bombing - still need to work on CCRP… I also know I don’t want to make a second pass over the target area - so how do I get all (4) of my CBU’s to release at once ? I see the SMS screen can do a single and a pair - - - but - - - that means I still have CBU’s on the plane after my initial pass… Do I want to release all (4) or do I have some gross conceptual error on this ?
Finally - how high do I have to pop up to avoide CBU blast damage on the plane ? Seems as if I’ve damaged myself before…
Anyway - thanks for the help and patience…
Regards,
Scott -
Yeah, any mission they give you, there is no guarantee that you can actually survive it. Some missions, you need to modify - some, you’ll need to cancel, as they are simply too dangerous to achieve.
On the SMS page where you can change from single to pair releases, you can change how many releases there are - should be the last option on the right. Try changing it to 4 single releases, and hold the weapon release. It should ripple them all off.
If you want to avoid fragging yourself, Id suggest not being around the target area when the bombs go off. Try lofting bombs from a couple miles away, and slicing back down to low level afterwards. You might like to try pop up attacks as well, in which case you could pop up to 3 or 4 thousand feet and dive back down during weapons release.

Thanks Blu - you’re a big help as always - let me try another run…

you can also change loadouts, drop the cbus for harm or jsow, add fuel tanks for extended range and all amraams for better defense.

In fact you should pretty much always add the fuel tanks, as they just about always carry them IRL. I like to keep at least one AIM-9 on the jet though, just in case.

if you got SU27,30,33 or Mig 29S around you will need all the 120’s you got Bro…

Don’t forget you can create your own flight if you want to go on the deck.
My first few steps before I do a few missions.
1. Delete all BARCAP patrols
2. Recreate BARCAP patrols with 1hr patrol time (this free’s up a lot of aircraft)
3. Check all OCA/Strike/SEAD mission to make sure they are not attack an already destroyed target, if so, delete.
4. Plan my own flight or pick one that looks fun and survivable. As for dropping all in one run. I normally set pairs and underneath that I set the total number of bombs. I haven’t played in a while but there must be a Ripple SGL/PRS mode?

why delete barcaps? You can change the TOT, waypoints and loadouts anyway and often start times.

Yep - figured out how to get them all off in a hurry - it’s as Blu said - last option on the SMS screen controls how many fire pulses to “ripple” off… Above that is the distance desired between bomb hits and above that is the option for Singles or Pairs… Works like a champ - when carrying many bombs you can cover a pretty large area pretty effectively…
Thanks for all the input…

I normally change the loadout and add fuel tanks to them. Also, a lot of the time 2 or 3 BARCAP’s are patrolling the same area at the same time.

How do you delete a mission? I’m starting to play with the ATO and this would be handy. Thanks!
-
you just go into the ATO and find the package or flight you want to delete, right click it and delete it. doesnt work if package or flight is already in flight. also you can right click the package in ATO and click “show flights” and delete part of a package if you think its necessary or if you want to use a different aircraft for a certain “role”
i highly recommend taking control of your own squadron which will give you about 12 or so aircraft to frag as you see fit!

now i have a quick one about ripple spacing… say your rp is set to ripple 4 single cbu and you set your spacing to say 100 ft… does that mean you have to be at a certain height or if your at say 22,000 ft will the aircrafts computer know that and space them accordingly…also what is good spacing in general?
-
Here is a link to the CBU-87 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CBU-87_Combined_Effects_Munition As you can see you are right about alttitude effecting the area of the burst. I usually set my spacing at half the burst radius so that I have good overlap, ie if I estimate (more like guess-timate) the radius is 400’ I set my spacing at 200’.
The problem we have is determining the radius and how accurately BMS models the CBU.

im just curious if the aircraft will know when your at low altitude.
ex.
if your at say 500 ft and your ripple space is 200 ft you may hear release, space, release, space, release, space, release…
but if your at 25000 you hear rapid release, release, release, release with minimal space
and im assuming that speed will affect this more than altitude
im going to test tonight i guess
its probably a good idea to just try and see what happens.
my burst altitude is usually 2500 and spacing ~250

A bit counter-intuitive but timing of releases at 30,000’ is the same as 300’. Assuming everything is level and steady dropping the bomb later just moves the whole ballistic path ahead by speed * time. In fact high altitude may seem more rapid because you have a higher TAS or G/S for the same indicated airspeed.
