How to write good bug reports
-
While there is no formal bug tracking tool set up at present, reports of bugs are welcome and encouraged. Post them here in this forum, not in this thread, for want of anywhere better for now at least. Here are some guidelines that might help us all track down and fix things as fast as is practical:
- DO NOT post a bug report until you have made a good faith effort to try to reproduce the problem more than once.
- One issue only per thread.
- Be specific about the problem – describe what you saw, what you expected and why you think your issue is a problem. Use event style descriptions: I pressed <this>and looked at <that>and then <this>happened at game time x and then <this>at game time y and so on (use game time from your DED CNI page; this can help a lot in cross reference to debug output).</this></this></that></this>
- Mention the BMS version in the title thread as in the following example : [4.33 Base 32bits]. If you have a bug in an older version of BMS, please reproduce the bug in the latest version before posting.
- Include specific conditions and steps required to reproduce a problem or note that you have tried to reproduce it and failed (for problems you can’t easily reproduce, please moderate your expectations on how fast things can be addressed).
- If the bug occurs with a campaign mission, try to reproduce it in a TE as well (TE’s are orders of magnitude faster to debug!).
- Include <date time=“”>_crash.txt file content in your post if there is one and your issue is a CTD (use CODE tags to surround those so that you can include the whole text of that file pasted in; if the whole thing won’t fit deleted all information after the “module list” line).</date>
- Upload txt files, dmp files and screenies that come with a CTD if you can and provide a link (avoid upload sites that massively bombard you with web scripts and so on when you try to download from them if you can).
- Include a description of your system hardware (this is really important if there’s a chance that the issue you find is related to the platform you have but obviously may not be relevant for some issues; use judgement but if you don’t supply this, you might well get asked the question).
- If you have workaround suggestions, “do <x>to avoid running into the problem”, please include that too (that likely helps anyone else who sees the same issue).</x>
If you want fast response on an issue doing the above will surely get you better service – help us to help you!
Equally, writing a bad bug report will probably get you ignored (“hey, I can’t install…fix it!” or “hey, the radar is busted, when will there be a patch??” as examples – those aren’t bug reports, they’re just noise ;)).
Oh, and to be clear: this thread is NOT for adding actual bug reports but if you have questions about HOW to submit bugs you could add those here for clarification of the process.

thnx Boxer
will use this as guideline
(hope it’s never used tho…!)
-
Also, please fill out your profile, and post your system specs in your signature, (such as I have).

For Bug report… Tell us also what Theater/Campaign/Day … with or without Mod installed … if Mods installed, which Mods.
Thank you.
-
For Bug report… Tell us also what Theater/Campaign/Day … with or without Mod installed … if Mods installed, which Mods.
Thank you.
With that in mind though, please also think about this from the FAQ’s
Q: What do I do if I want to make some mods and contribute them to the BMS team?
A: BMS encourages modding as this will benefit the community in general. However, please don’t expect support for bugs that are reported from modified installations as a “right”; it is likely beyond the resources of the BMS team to try to pinpoint all possible problems on anything other than a clean install. We’ll make best efforts to help but please bear in mind that there are real limits on what we can reasonably do outside the materials that are part of a release.
If your issue is observed in something other than a clean install, try reproducing it first in a clean install. If you report a bug in a modified install, support is “best effort” which in effect means you’re most likely going to be at the back of the queue for getting attention on the problem. Just trying to be realistic about setting expectations.

Seeing as Falcon has its own Crash Reporter now, would it not be a better idea to zip or rar or 7zip the files related to the crash into one file and stick it in a dropbox like skydrive or something specifically setup for this. Or give an email address to send the dumps and files too?
-
You can download winzip or 7zip for free and create an archive in about 3 seconds.
There is a place to post bug report (right here) but the crashlog only is pointless, need all the information listed above , and even more if possible.

I can’t find the folder *:\Falcon BMS 4.33 (Internal) on my HD. Can you ZIP your folder and mail it to me? Thx in advance.

Nothing related to your issue. Those issue won’t crash the game.

Ok that’s weird cause this is the only logs I get from the CTD.

I have the same problem as Disco. I also have those two logs he posted, but I also have a crash log. Please forgive the length.

Hi folks, I have a bug to report. Please click the images to view the problem. During target mission, I came across an unusual incident never occurred before. In the target site, when i pressed the bomb release button, the tanks and bombs twist up still attached to the plane and begin to shake violently before crashing to the ground.

Thank you for the guide!
What (and how) is to be collected if BMS is just hung up? In my case I have a 50/50 chance that BMS becomes inactive if minimized (e.g. alt & tab to another program). So I don’t get a crash log since the only option I have is to kill the BMS thread with the task manager.
