Viper Cockpit Question-

Guys- What’s that the device which is mounted on the left hand canopy rail just behind your left shoulder? Small black looking box on a vertical mount (Noticed Hornets have it as well).
Thanks-

You are propably talking of the magnetic cueing device that CCIP f-16s have? I’m not exactly sure if we mean the same thing, but if yes, that thing is used for the HMCS as far as i know.
-
Sounds like the one, it makes a magnetic field basically. The helmet reads the field to work out its position (being pre calibrated to suit the field as installed), for head tracking which is a lot more stable than TIR.
-
That’s pretty interesting. Could one then, in theory, deny the enemy their ability to use an HMCS system by pointing a really strong magnet at them? Kind of an extension of the jammer, but for dogfights?
-
I believe that EMI would probably play hell on a lot of things in the pit, including the AC with the emitter. You would have to be really close or have a VERY powerful EMI generator capable of concentrating a beam like a laser I would think. Good idea maybe, but very impractical.

Sadly, strength of the force applied by a magnetic field falls off really fast with distance - inverse square law iirc.
Basically, if we had strong pointable magnets, we’d have tractor beams already.
@Schniderman - it sounds cool but I’ve no idea how you condense a field into a beam, sounds like a bit more fiction than science…

True, and even if it were possible, I don’t believe the machine capable of doing this would fit in a air frame.

Another point to consider is :depends on the strength of the magnet it could help with the pilots health(magnotherapy) or do the opposite
-
About the only affect magnotherapy will have on the pilots health will be if he has metal fillings…

Well, good thing is that I exchanged mine
