ACMI problems on exit from 3D, (not the usual one)…
-
Hey guys, Callsign JoNay here.
If you’ve seen my YouTube channel you know that I love to record full campaign mission ACMI and incorporate it into the final cut of the video. I’ve been using the technique for a long time on dozens/hundreds of flights with no issue, but I’ve been having problems lately with my game at the leaving aircraft screen.
I know what you’re thinking, you’re going to tell me that a previous ACMI file saved incorrectly and that I need to delete it from the folder before I can properly exit the leaving aircraft screen, but I’ve already done that and it hasn’t solved the issue.
I used to have BMS installed to my SSD
drive and I had no problem recording very large full mission ACMI files. Sure it would sometimes take 20+ minutes at the leaving aircraft screen, but they would always save correctly if I waited long enough. Then a funny thing started happening. After a few minutes of waiting I would get the pop up message that BMS was no longer responding. When I closed the program and looked in the ACMI folder I noticed that the mis-saved ACMI file was 33 gigs in size! This was coincidentally exactly how much free space I have on my
drive SSD. I tried the flight a few more times and the same thing kept happening. The file would balloon up to the size of the available space on my drive while it was processing/saving and then crash the application when there was no more storage available on the drive.
I decided to re-install BMS to my E: drive which is a 2 terabyte HD with over a terabyte of free space. I’ve tried saving ACMI a few more times but it still won’t work. I no longer get the pop up message that BMS is not responding, and the file itself is not ballooning in size to fill all available space on my drive, but the leaving aircraft screen Never ends. I actually left it at the screen all last night while I slept, so it was 6+ hours and it was still there when I woke up. I force-quit the program curious to see the size of the ACMI file, but it was only about 80,000 kb.
I’ve deleted all ACMI files from the folder except for the ones that come stock with the install, (pop up delivery, missile evasion, etc), and I’ve even tried adjusting the size of the ACMI max size in the Setup. I usually use 1000 MB and I’ve successfully saved dozens of flights that way, but lately I’ve also tried, 200, 50, and even 20 a few times and I still have the same problem.
Recording ACMI in dogfight/match play is no problem, and recording ACMI on a very short aborted campaign flight (about 10 mins or less) is no problem either, but any kind of flight that approaches 30+ minutes and I get hung up at the leaving aircraft screen. My computer doesn’t even sound like it’s working. There are no chugging sounds and task manager shows about 14% CPU usage.
Any ideas?

I had an ACMI compile crash on me the other day. When I looked it was 151GB and my SSD had run out of room is why it crashed. This confuses me since I have my AVTR limit at 1000MB so it should have made a sequence of files. Interesting enough that huge file compressed down into 35MB acmi.zip from Tacview which is about the size I’d expect from a <1GB VHS file. I think there is a lot of fluff in these new VHSs.
My memory is ACMIs didn’t use to be so big. Maybe the bubble system expansion or some other changes had this effect but I don’t know.
I’m going to set my AVTR limit lower and see if I can force smaller VHSs. Maybe something is wrong in the code relating to max VHS size?

Iirc from a long time ago Dev post the ACMI part of the code was not touched at all.

…try to use a new logbook. A corrupt *.lbk file can cause acmi problems!

Wow, 155 gigs? It seems like we have the same issue. Something is making our ACMI balloon in size until they completely fill our drives. I wonder what we have in common.Anyway… Update.
I decided to fly the problematic mission without ACMI and then just save my campaign after completion and cross my fingers that things would return to normal working order for the next flight. I’m happy to report that it has. I just recorded a full flight with ACMI from takeoff to touchdown without any issue with settings at 1000 MB.
So I’m not sure what the problem was. Maybe there was an object out there that causes an issue, or there was just an exceptional amount of telemetry data. I never did try flying the mission with an alternate logbook as was suggested by Cop23rd. Maybe by completing the mission and saving my campaign at a later time in the campaign it un-corrupted my LB. Who knows…
If I figure out more, I’ll report it.
Thanks for the feedback, gents.

Did you paused the game during your missions ?
If i’m not mistaken i had the same problem in the past and i think it was the pause.

I’ve paused missions with ACMI running without problems occurring, and on other days I experienced problems without pausing, so I don’t think pausing is related to my issues.

how do you fly without ACMI, it is enabled by default. I am having the same problem

If an ACMI crashes (for whatever reasons), it mostly ! (not always) creates a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge file. That was since BMS 1, and even in Allied Force the same.

Since U4 there’s a significant performance improvement for importing ACMI .flt to .vhs. which reduces the time needed for import by at least a factor of 10 to 20. If you’re using the latest version of Tacview, I would recommend to set the ACMI file size to 50 MB, because you are much quicker at the debrief screen and you can merge the individual files without any problems afterwards.
