Warthog FSSB R3 info?
-
Considering buying one, but I’ve got some questions. I mailed them, but due to what I believe is language issues, I haven’t been able to wrap my head around some things. I’m also interested in the experience customers have had.
1, What key combinations activate different software programs/change settings and such? Is there any particular risk of activating something or such by mistake in game?
2, I read that you could install it in two different ways. One was just removing the default “can” (whatever that round thing with a flat top is called ) and replacing it with the FSSB. The other involved re-wiring things from the default “can” to use them in the FSSB. What’s the difference between these methods of installing the FSSB?
3, Is the installing procedure complicated, or is it just “plug and play”?
4, How does the control feel? Is the stick as accurate as it was before installing the FSSB?

There are videos that show the physical install being done. It isn’t hard either way. The difference being is if you don’t use the board from the old “can” as you put it then you cannot control the joystick via TARGET as it isn’t seen as a WH joystick. Using the board allows it to be controlled in TARGET as if it was the standard joystick.
4, How does the control feel? Is the stick as accurate as it was before installing the FSSB?
This to me seems like a silly question. If it wasn’t more accurate than the default joystick then why would people spend that kind of money to buy it?

Well sure, but not all flight simmers are that crazy. Some might like some reassurance before buying a joystick upgrade that costs more than the stick they’re upgrading

I haven’t gotten that crazy yet myself but I have considered buying another WH so I can get the FSSB3 and have a WH for all occasions. FSSB is cool but I’ve heard it isn’t the cats meow when it comes to rotary aircraft.

Right on Stubbies. I have the FSSB R2 fr my Cougar. It is matchless for the F-16 and any other aircraft that use force sensing sticks. However, I use stock Warthog for everything else. Force sensing stick is not realistic for aircraft that do not use it.
@Scrim 1 NO. No different than stock sticks. There are no softwares or key combinations associated with FSSB.

Well, I shut my eyes so I wouldn’t see just how low on cash it made me, and bought an FSSB. Totally worth it, and a super weird feeling to use!

Once you get used to it, you will wonder how you flew without it. Same for TIR.

Seems plausible! Already today I almost linked up with a KC-135 mid turn. I really fancy the feeling, it’s starting to feel more and more like the link between control of the aircraft and my hand is no longer the stick, but a direct link so to speak.

Well AAR even mid turn is just an issue of practice. I can do this with the stock WH easy enough. Just requires 4 taps nose up on the trim to make life easier maintaining position.

New firmware plus GUI app, looks promising : http://www.realsimulator.com/FSSB_R3_Forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=44

I recently purchased the FSSB R3 so I can take a shot at your questions;
1. You can configure the “activation” combo buttons so that it isn’t activated in-game. So no risk of activating it in-game.
2. It basically comes down to whether or not you want to be able to program the stick with TARGET or have it perform just as a simple Direct X device. To make it work with TARGET you have to cannibalize the circuit board from the stock Warthog. I wanted the extra flexibility to program with TARGET so I used the stock circuit board. Even if you do use the Stock board you can also plug it in using the built-in connections and capabilities (ie. you can use it either way you want).
3. The physical part of the installation is very easy and all you need a screw driver. The software part is “plug and play”
4. In the BMS F-16, the control is amazing (although it takes a little getting used to). It really adds to the fly-by-wire feel of the F-16 flight model and it feels like the sim and FSSB were made for each other. Other sims will work but might take some tweaking (ie programming response curves) to feel right.
One other point I would make is that I feel you need to have the stick attached to something sturdy (desk chair, cockpit, etc) as the stick would most likely move around if it were not.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

You just hit on two of my main points. I don’t want to have to find a way to clamp down the SSC (even with it already having a large base on it) to enjoy something like this. Never mind that I would also want to have a non-modified WH setup for rotary A/C and such so if I were to jump down this path that would mean buying another WH AND the FSSB R3. So that would be rather costly to say the least.
Yes I know that I could buy just the WH SSC but if you look at the cost of that alone to me it is just more worthwhile to buy the entire WH and have a spare throttle.
However the clamping issue and the costs alone are keeping me from jumping down this path atm.

If you use the WH circuit board, will the joystick still be force sensitive or does it go back to beginning a regular WH? I assume the former as otherwise there would be no need to buy a second joystick.
Also, what are the following files used for (especially the BMS file) that are listed on the RS website?
New Firmware & HID DEV TOOLs available
MJF.FW.1.05.0 Available
LCJ.FW.1.01.0 Available
BMS.FW.1.02.0 Available
