Engines question
-
how much faster is the new engines going into the super hornets and the gripens to the old 404? Is it true that some of the super hornets biggest negatives are thats its underpowered for its size?
-
“Faster” isn’t the issue…it’s about rated thrust. After that then it’s a matter of how that particular engine is integrated into that particular airframe, so it’s not really a valid question. None of the jets mentioned is “under powered”…but they do all perform different, and that’s only to be expected.

what I am referring to is the public conception that something was wrong with the engines initially which leads to the present upgrade.

…“wrong” is also a misconception. There is always room for improvement in any system. As tech evolves, so do systems. And nothing get pilots happier than more thrust available no matter how much they start out with.

It’s 4,300 faster because it’s 3 bigger. -
When was the F404 ever used in a Super Hornet?
…. the new engines going into the super hornets […] to the old 404
I think the Super Hornet ‘old’ engine is the F414 400 and the ‘new’ engine is a F414 EPE …. not sure if that is actually scheduled or developmental or proposed or … something else.

Will we be seeing the F-16 block 70 anytime?

Correct - the Super mounts the F414 series.
