Idea for human AWACS
-
Hey guys,
A relatively frequent question is whether BMS has a client for human players to take on the role of ATC / AWACS. While there are some methods out there (2D UI map, F4AWACS, vPAR), each have their own limitations, thus neither of these are really suited for the job.
As writing an entire ATC tool requires a lot of time and effort, last time this question was asked, I had a random idea come up that might be quicker and simpler. As I don’t really know much about the interior design, I wouldn’t know where to start and this may be (I assume it probably is) totally impossible to do, but who knows what our DB / avionics gurus can accomplish, right? What I was wondering was, would it be possible to adjust the appropriate aircraft (thinking E-3 and E-8 primarily) in such a way that you could get a RADAR on the MFD with a huge range?
If possible, get them to scan 360°, and restrict E-3 to AA + SEA modes, E-8 to A-G modes (without SEA, IIRC), as per their real life counterparts? That way, the person that would want to take on this role, could jump in the E-x and use his MFD and in-game radio to fulfil his task?
Since it wouldn’t really be necessary to take-off or land, a simple cockpit model with 1 huge MFD (for better readability) filling most of the screen, and a few basic instruments / controls (radio, DED, steerpoint adjustment and an autopilot) should suffice. Shift 3 could be used to keep an eye on the basic instruments (ADI, airspeed, altitude, heading, …) when needed.I know that such a change is obviously MP critical, so it would require disabling the acdata check, making it less favourable for open servers, but for others, this might be a game changer until we get a full proper C3 client.

I welcome any suggestions on the topic of human ABMs/WDs

+1
Would be great to get this option into BMS. This would be like going full circle to enhance the way things are being utilized on the real battlefield.

So…I’m looking over the FAF manual and there is an AWACS mode built into MP in Allied Force. My suggestion would be to start there, and improve - mainly in the area of inter-flight/MP coms.
See Page 504 of the FAF Detailed Manual, and read forward.
