TE 37, Head On Engagement
-
Ok, so heres what I’ve noticed. I load up at ~17k’ and 325knots. My intercept target is just over 10nm away. As I increase speed towards my adversary I notice that if I put a soft radar lock on it I get shot at with no missile warning, just a boom and my screen will go up in flames. If I switch to the DF override mode and HARD LOCK then my friend gets scared, drops flares and tries to run below me to take advantage in the vertical.
I thought going high on the first turn was a no-no? I usually pull level or slightly nose low while keeping visual on the bandit here, until I figure out where my nose is going to meet up with him again and void his warranty with my 20mm. If I miss the first try I chase him down to the deck where he tries to bleed speed and altitude. Then he says hello to my little friends. It’s ok the first couple of times, but after that there is no more thrill.
Anyone have any ideas to make it more challenging? Maybe fly with restrictions like mil throttle or less, like say 90%? Should I turn my screen off and see if I still have success? Or maybe change the training mission to a different aircraft and more skilled AI pilot?

P.S., sorry if I’m beating a dead horse here. Just want to get more “creative” in fighting.

I fly that TE all the time as my ‘Pre-MP TIR/HOTAS/Keyfile all set up and ready to’ TE.
Add a second SU-27/J-11(?) for more of a challenge (added via mission commander for me).

Could also use a virtual pilot as the opponent. For all aspect IR engagements though the ROE would be a bit different than in that TE; basically starting with more distance between the aircraft.
