Meta Quest Pro vs HP Reverb G2
-
How’s the clarity and readability of the MFDs/instruments compare from the G2 to the Pro since it is technically lower PPD/resolution but has the pancake lenses?
While I get slow down on the ground or super busy areas with my G2 and probably similar hardware and also can feel what you talking about some when it gets to low refresh rates, the vast majority of my flight fps is around 90 and feels more smooth than the 72hz that the Quest 2 runs at the higher resolution.
Did you buy the game specific facial interface or are you running the stock one that allows you to look under? Since l’ve modded mine for this so I can see my MFDs, ICPs, and switches, I’m curious how a headset designed for that feature feels.

Clarity - perfect. I use a PD of 1.25 to get the clarity back. Edge-to-edge clarity, unlike the G2 sweet spot.
The Quest Pro can do 72, 80 or 90Hz along with ASW (motion projection). So better than the HP.
I have all options, the full blackout was an optional extra which I bought but that’s a lot harder to use with glasses. I am currently using it stock without any blackout blacks or side masks and it provides much more visibility than the G2 under it to a desk/keyboard.

Benchmark TE can’t hold 72Hz but manages ASW at 36fps which I expected.

But noticably less than the center of the G2 until you bump up to 1.25? Honestly, the central clarity to read MFDs is the primary reason I use the G2 instead of my other headsets.

To be fair, Quest 2 can do that too with the higher refresh, it was a comparison since you said 72hz. It lowers the recommendation resolution though. SteamVR has an ASW like reprojection refresh as well but ASW is honestly the better method. But all of them bother me with the ghosting of fast moving objects like at the merge, actually more so than slower refresh rates. But everyone has their personal preferences.

Yep, that exactly why I I have chopped mine G2/Quest 2/Pimax 8k X to look under. Now a I can’t go back for sim use at least. Also it’s part of the reason I’ve looked trading out one/two of those for a Quest Pro.
Also I never expect full refresh rate in the benchmark TE. And you get a noticable bump as soon as you start taxiing. I’m ok with the hit on because it will be a shorter part of the mission (hopefully) and it’s not fast action so I won’t use as fast of head movements for the lower refresh rate to bother as much. However, the drop is noticable and everyone has their preference with what is comfortable in VR. Just trying to gauge if the Quest Pro is something to try out for the VR addict I am.

@Snake122 The Quest Pro is on a 30 day no quibble return at the moment. I got mine from Amazon who were also doing a 12 month interest free offer. So initial outlay is minimum for a 30 day trial. So if you are thinking of trying it…… now is a great time.

More testing with the Benchmark TE and I can now hold 72fps mostly except when looking back towards the ramp when holding at RWY 14L. I achieved this by dropping the antialiasing down from 8 to 4.

@scubapics I too went from my G2 to a QP but found a horrible amount of “haze” during night flights (especially midnight darkness). Swapped the QP for another one and the same thing, maybe worse (covered the entire lens). I also had trouble with the mic understanding my voice attack commands (which never happens on the G2) even after voice training it using the QP mic. So, I eventually returned the 2nd one but I do miss the QP.
Have you experienced any of these issues? If I got a couple bad headsets, I might try again because I really did like the Quest Pro!

€1200 (XRShop) is a sweet spot for VR these days, but with the Varjo Aero now ~€2000 (inc. Steam Base Station 2) it’s getting up there where deciding is a bit difficult. Is the Quest 2x as good as a G2, I have my doubts, but the Varjo I believe is that and more… add to that the G2 is a dead end with mediocre support at best nowadays.

@Flash-0 I believe haze is the con to the pancake lenses.
Overall, FWIW very happy with my G2, but want to try pancake lenses. I wish BMS supported my Pimax 8K X better, it’s slightly less clear than the G2 but definitely better than the Quest 2 for an amazing FOV. I also agree with @Icer, HP is probably done with VR, but it is the clearest headset I’ve tried (CV1, 5K, Rift S, Vive being the others that I don’t use anymore too). But for homecockout builders, the XR stuff coming out seems like it could be a great thing soon for them with this next generation with Vive XR and Quest 3 looks interesting.

@Flash-0 I had the same issue. just an FYI that this was resolved in the latest v59 update. it looks great now.
