Fallon-Nevada Theater discussion

Well, erm, Pat is like mother beach bum California hard working version, what you’d expect?!

Greeat jobd Polak/Toonces, the screenshots look great. I can see how 2012 reallys isturnig out to be the year of the BMS addon theatre.

Sorry, but pictures in toonces post are not from current Fallon-Nevada project. This somehow proves how pictures can be misleading. Despite the fact that they are old, they are great pictures. As the recent input about terrain topic shows
https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?11931-Free-Falcon-ground-terrain-graphics/page11
no tile paint effort is worth the time put into it. -
Yes, I thought that was clear; my screenshots are from Dee-Jay’s Nevada theater, heavily edited into a rough draft of what a 16 segment Fallon theater would look like. The tiles are the old Nevda tiles- nothing new.
Mostly I’m trying to gauge how the theater feels at 16 segments. I think Ted might be right and that 16 segments might be too small. It does keep the fights close, but there isn’t a whole lot of extra room to work with. I can’t imagine this theater being a lot of fun with modern -120s and SA-10s; you’re going to be taking off practically into firing envelopes of each other.
However, if you remove all the fire and forget stuff there is just a ton of dogfighting you can get into. That’s what I enjoy. Mixing it up and getting into sidewinder and gun range and slugging it out.
I think there are a lot of improvements that can be made to the terrain with some of the things Ted has previously posted. Even as crappy as the Nevada tiles are now, it’s nice to have something new to look at besides all the green of Panama and Korea over and over and over again. I really don’t know how this theater is going to turn out, but I think there will be opportunities for us to experiment with some interesting scenarios.

I am definitely afraid it IS! Particularly when the starting Airbase (Fallon NAS) is to close to the theater edge. You see this "edge of the world " every time you take off and your immersion is killed right from the get go! However, after cleaning some ends and odds I shall send you a files for you to experience it personally and draw your own conclusion.

Maybe we should just do 32 segments then. 16 segments is great for the campaign, but I hadn’t considered the edge of the world thing, and also, 16 segments will be limiting for anyone that wants to do a modern scenario in there.
Maybe it’s just better to go with 32 segments now, before we spend too much time on it.

Good idea.
16Seg’s bring on a whole TON of shite that need’s to be worked, ala GUAM.
Not for the feint hearted\NooB……trust me.Regards

Hey Skynight,
This whole theater was predicated on someone building me a terrain. Since that never happened, work never really got started beyond the neat idea stage.Markturner has expressed some interest in building a terrain in this general area…perhaps he’ll take the ball and run with it. At any rate, I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for it.

@toonces and Skyknight and All.
Here are the facts.16 Seg Theater have been built a while ago. EGHI was the one who assisted me with building them. Thanks to him for that. When it was built and tested it turned out that the size was so small that upon takeoff from either Fallon or Tonopah on the opposite side you immediately hit or see the edge of the theater, which was very ugly to the point of complete break of believe ability. It was really, really bad.
Still….16 Seg theater is ready and I can send anytime to anyone who wants to play with that further but including making new tiles. I unfortunately am not too keen and willing to spend my time and participate in undertaking, which I do not like final results of. And this is pity because the tiles are 75% ready, however it is also the fact, that larger terrain than 16 would require some additional editing works and those were abandoned ATM.

Ted,
We talked about that and I agreed with you. I was thinking of 16 segments from the standpoint of gameplay, not graphics, and it had never even occured to me that you’d be looking right off the map at 20,000 feet in a 16 segment theater.I think the bigger point is that we (the community) really should be working on some sort of Nevada/Red Flag/Top Gun type theater. The specific size is less important than that it captures at least one of the master jet bases out there- Fallon, Nellis, etc. Really almost anything is possible in such a theater.
I managed to enjoy myself for years using Snakeman’s Nevada terrain which was hugely too big. So, 32 or 64 segments is of no real matter to me. The campaigns I create would be tightly focused regardless of the actual size of the terrain.
Honestly, I have so many games to play right now (damn you Steam sales!) that I’m not like sitting around twiddling my thumbs and hitting F5 refreshing the theater page to see if a Nevada terrain is ready to go. If you or anyone else creates a Nevada terrain I’m happy to see if I can script up some action, but if not, I’ve got lots of other things to occupy myself with right now.
No worries, bud.

TBH Nevada would be the one theatre I always wanted in Falcon, ask Araporn.
I’d even let myself down and volunteer for campaign testing it. Imagine having Brian and Pat along and doing a nostalgic run there lol.
