Maddog

Using labels to learn how the AI reacts in air to air combat in F18F I noticed SU27 and SU33 launching on me from all altitudes then turning before pitbull. I get launch warning then the missile loses lock but if I am within its wez about 8 miles it will relock and hit me. Understanding this I tried the same. Had 4 SU33 loaded for air to ground attack escorted by 2 SU27. At 18 miles the SU27 launched at me and I launched at them simultaneously, then quickly locked and launched 120C at each other aircraft in TWS mode then did a reverse immelman as 2 AA12 were coming my way. My genius wingman was destroyed but looking back I got 5 kills! My amraam’s managed to hit the aircraft they were initially locked on. So apparently the mad dog launch by red a/c is standard tactics. Also have seen red aircraft go low then launch AA12 at me from 6 miles. Staying high while they are low is the best tactic to win. Of course carrying 10 120C’s is really nice. Launching 120 at Mig31 makes them turn and lose lock with AA9 which is SARH. I just saw Mig31 low outrun 120B at 5.5 miles.

Are you jamming? Does AA-12 have a HPRF longer “Husky” state like -120?
Any good pilot will abort guidance if it means staying alive.
-
I turn jammer off right after launch (and order wingman too) as HOJ is apparently modeled in BMS and FF5
-
Do you use the Super Hornet with the stock cockpit or with the F-16 cockpit? The Afm of the Super Hornet is not fully modelled, i prefer to use the Hornet C because the Afm is better than E/F models…
-
I use everything stock; whatever the default is I go with it. I prefer flying the E or F because it has twice the loadout of the F16
-
both aircrafts are very good
i use the F-18 with F-16 cockpit with F-18 external wings, i don’t like the F-18 stock cockpit
-
Yeah I hear ya. In the F18 can’t see if jammer on etc. and far less functionality available.

Is it possible to launch ARH in maddog mode (not TWS) in BMS 4.32? If yes, how?
In F4 AF it was possible using just fire button….but in BMS no launch. I am trying lock on after launch, but no sucess ATM -
I have it (Demo´s answer from another thread…it works fine …i am trying it useing just laptop keyboard BTW):
For Mad Dog select BORE on the SMS page with the AIM-120 selected. Press and hold the pickle button when you want to shoot.I did a quick modification of AA-12 to get R24R (missile radar range is only about blast radius)…it works fine, I am able to relock JAMMING target with my weak MiG-23 radar! If I break lock (turn off radar) just before impact, my R24 lost the target and is balistic, no pitbull
Now I am trying LOAL…R24 is cool -

You can fire a Maddog by simply holding down HOTAS cursor enable (Shift + N by default), and while you do that, press pickle. No fiddling around with SMS is required.

perhaps i am doing something wrong, but Shift+N does not work for me (i have the same shortcut for it)…I can fire maddog only via SMS -> BORE… but I am not able to take control over the missile…if I lock the target after launch, missile is going old uguided path…if i switch to SLAVE, its for second missile, not the first, fired one
Howto take control over previously fired missile in BORE mode?

Can’t do it. If you fire maddog, it is maddog to the end.

It’s been a long time since I had been using the keyboard for controlling stuff like that, so I’m not sure if I recalled correctly - but I remeber using cursor enable via keyboard as a bid finicky. However, using Morphine’s Warthog profile I got cursor enable mapped to the slew control cursor button function. Holding down cursor enable using this button, pressing pickle, and then releasing cursor enable after launch works like a charm for me.

…then LOAL mode for my new R-24R (AA-7C) is not possible
Because it has literaly no active radar (rather few feet “proximity senzor”) it cant lock onto target without support AC radar …I use ARH code just because it is much more advanced compared to SARH code.I am quite sure, it was possible to fire amraam in maddog mode (F4AF), then lock the target - and missile got mid-course update and turned to target
I have used it in BVR dogfights against human oponent.
BTW I was able to fire maddog using mentioned shortcut

Great! Happy hunting (until you have to roll back your Logbook because some Maddog downed a friendly aircraft, giving you a big red friendly kill in your campaign statistics, since those f***** things track anything that looks jucy to them… ;))

Oh and btw: cursor enable is also quite useful for other purposes, like switching between Maverick modes (PRE, VIS, BORE), and selecting HARM modes. I know, not relevant concerning OP; it’s just some info for the sake of completeness.

I must say, this new re-lock feature is amazing in game….I really enjoy it even without LOAL. Super funny SARH combats, AIs use it without problems. It is gamechanger - the missiles can still miss most of the time, but these are near miss, no more balistic drops right after the launch. MiG-23 ML radar is weak, so it is still hard vs F15…but if I have a lock…fire a missile…powerfull F15 JAM or chaffs brake the lock- I can see missile is restoring course to target after small drop. JAM is effective, chaffs are effective, but nothing is holy.

I had quite specific technical question…is there answer howto LOAL inside posted webpage? (seems a bit generic to me)…?
sorry my english is worse each day -
AIM-120 has three states in flight: commanded, inertial, autonomous. OK I forgot home on jam but let’s forget that.
Long range off the rail it is commanded. If track is lost or target is unbugged (snip) then it goes inertial (last known point of intercept, internal logic only). Once inertial it never never goes back to commanded. It doesn’t matter if you accidentally unlock the target for 1/2 second, it’s snipped forever. The only reason the AIM-120 isn’t super easy to notch and defeat in the command phase is that F-16 radar tracks will coast for many seconds.
I don’t know of any CG A2A missile which is able to fire outside of command guidance and later reacquire CG navigation.
