Well, not the outcome I was expecting. I was able to install Win11 23H2 with success. Unfortunately, my good (very old) ASUS ROG laptop fried something during a routine Windows update. Smells like a power supply from experience. Oh well, time to upgrade to a desktop!!!

RE: Should I have to install Microprose Falcon 4 CD to install and run BMS ?
Nothing else has been needed until yesterday. Will run right off the harddrive with no extra applications needed. The 32-bit Setup.exe file would run fine as long as you ran it as an admin.

RE: Should I have to install Microprose Falcon 4 CD to install and run BMS ?
Ah! I guess I left out the interesting bits…
While I do have the original Microprose binder and disk, I’ve since just copied the disc installation files/folders to a storage HDD and run it off my hard-drive. Its been foolproof until yesterday.
However, I think I may know the root cause of my trouble. Seems during the Win11 installation that the Windows Security Core Isolation > Memory Integrity got enabled. I think the OS install may have been jacked-up so I’m running through another new/clean install to see if it improves or not.

RE: Should I have to install Microprose Falcon 4 CD to install and run BMS ?
Just wanted to pass along something I just ran across with installing the F4 disc on Windows 11 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3296).
Long story short, did a brand new from scratch install of Win 11 23H2 with no issues. When I ran the Setup.exe nothing would happen. System remained running - no crashes or lockups - but the old installer would not load. I never had this problem in previous Win 11 (22 or 21) versions. I did get a workaround by booting into Win 11 Safe Mode and was able to install it without problems. Hoping this may help others if having a similar issue.
On a side note, the 23H2 seems to be very sluggish on my computer compared to the other versions as well. Seems there must be a lot more going on behind the scenes with Micr$oft’s new version. So far, I’m not a fan.

RE: Ice’s Falcon BMS Profile Updated for BMS 4.37
@linknet No issues at all today. Was able to load up and fly around. No errors when resetting either profile. I guess it was a one-time event but will let you know if it keeps happening. Thanks for the support!!!

@linknet Thanks, will do! I’ll try to provide an update this evening.

RE: Ice’s Falcon BMS Profile Updated for BMS 4.37
@linknet I’ll try to grab a screenshot the next time it happens, but I did write down the exact text. I have my processes slimmed down so I was having problems grabbing the image.
I don’t typically do a profile reset so I may just be outside the normal (or way off on average) The Wife Unit isn’t due back home until tomorrow, so I should be able to test it again this evening and provide an update and any repro steps.

RE: Ice’s Falcon BMS Profile Updated for BMS 4.37
Just curious if I’m the only one experiencing this, I occasionally get a popup alert when resetting the profile with an error message:
Line 12942 (File 'C:\Bin\AutoDataUpdate.exe)
Error: Unknown function nameI have the latest Helios version installed and everything seems to work fine in BMS and the touchscreen panel once the sim loads. Both types of kneeboards (BMS & WDP) seem to work fine. I can provide any additional information if needed.

Then, after rivatuner came in, and limit the FPS, with all vertical / gsync off, this the game changer thing, I drag all the way to right, high resolution textures on, all shader except particle shader for smoke on, no stutter at all.I hope you find your path mate to get rid the stutter.
best wishes and regards,
-GP-Thanks for the added input! I tested with Process Lasson and Afterburner but did not get any noticeable improvements, but I will certainly add the Rivatuner into the mix and see how it goes. To your point, maybe it is a trifecta kind of thing with BMS?!

RE: FPS DROP IN THE NEW FALCON BMS 4.36
Have Process Lasson running and getting about the same FPS as I did with other affinity settings via Task Manager. Honestly, I probably have no real clue on how best to use it. It does seem like a cool application and will keep trying it out.
Playing now in fullscreen with GSYNC enabled seems better than boarderless, but I haven’t been able to improve the FPS and the stutters keep happening panning left or right. I think the stutters are more annoying than the FPS.

@Slick8791-0 Depends on the CPU you use, like mine, all logical Core at CPU 0, 2, 4, and 6. The rest is thread core. Try using process lasso, it is totally free and safe tho. I use it personally, with some combination with the afterburner thing, I can maxed all the way to the right using high quality textures on 4.35 U3. Don’t get me wrong, the machine that I do test all the way to the right is nearly 11 years OLD. I hope you found this might relieve your FPS related problem.
Tips, Priority High does not neccessary on my case tho, it just simply turn off all the hyperthreading, so all the logical core do not look into more feed from the threading core. Try it, I really hope you found improvement there
Thanks! I’ll look into the process lasso, but have no clue what that is…?

For cpu with 4 physical cores => I recommend leaving HT on, and using process-affinity mask to run BMS on 3 cores # 2,4,6.For cpu with 6 or more physical cores => I recommend disabling HT in the BIOS… why? it effectively doubles the L3 cache available to each core. (why not: if you do a lot of video editing/transcoding day to day… or crypto mining, or similar work that can make good use of HT)
But ofc every system is different, so measure before-and-after, then decide accordingly.
Thanks for the tip! I have the following CPU per Task Manager:
Sockets = 1
Cores = 4
Logical Processors = 8I tried the 2, 4, 6 affinity set and didn’t get any noticeable improvements other than +/- 2 fps across the board. My pc is an older ASUS ROG which prevents the disability of hyperthreading. Or, I’m totally lost as where that is in their BIOS menus…?

RE: FPS DROP IN THE NEW FALCON BMS 4.36
Another observation I’ve had (that most others have probably seen as well) if I cycle through the Show Friendly in External view, the FPS is down around 20 as they taxi out of the hangers. When I hit E to exit out of the mission while watching them, the same FPS jumps up to 80-90 as soon as I hit the E key. It’s interesting to me that the same graphics output jumps that high once the simulation’s overhead is removed. Is there an easy way to tell if it’s my CPU or GPU that’s throttling me down so much?

@Slick8791-0 : Mate, have you ever try to play it with hyperthreading off? I might suggest you try to play BMS, both at 4.35 U3 and 4.36 U1 with hyperthreading off. The hardway is using task manager and set CPU affinity for BMS only using the logical core CPU. It means, if you have 4 logical core with 8 thread core, just turn off / untick the 8 thread core, and using only 4 Logical core. The easiest way, use the process lasso tool and when BMS run, you can right click at it, and click the CPU Affinity, click hyperthreading off. Let me know if you’ve got improvement with your system.
Another one, with consecutive fly mission through mission, RAM tends to fully occupied by BMS, this when process lasso can trim the RAM usage for BMS at anytime, just right click like before, and goes to “more” then click “Trim Memory”.
I’ve been for a while play BMS with “always off Hyperthreading”. Just let me know if this made improvement.
Regards,
-GP-Thanks for the reminder as I forgot to mention that part. I run a few batch files that stop some services and unloads running apps. I can drop my CPU from 115 services running down to just 72 when launching BMS. CPU utilization stays around 1~2%.
I do set the CPU priority on BMS to HIGH and have been unchecking CPU0 instead. I read somewhere that some Windows applications default to CPU0 so I let the system keep that one and run BMS on CPU1 thru CPU7. Did I get that wrong as to your advice on the hyperthreading part?

Comparing 4.35 with 4.36 will not be a relevant test given that airbases were reworked with more objects, you cannot exactly have the same situation…
So this drop although real, doesn’t mean anything without context…
Understood and I completely agree that with the enhancements to the same training mission it would take a hit and isn’t a true 1:1 comparison. Overall, I’m not rejecting the great work done by the team on these updates…keep them coming! I still have my original F4 disc and binder if that tells you anything. Even have some original Falcon 3.0 maps somewhere. I’ll keep tinkering with my settings and see if I can regain some lost FPS by dialing something back.

RE: FPS DROP IN THE NEW FALCON BMS 4.36
I just made the jump from 4.35-U3 to 4.36-U1. All hardware/software elements being the same my average FPS drop was 16%. On training mission 1, my average at cold startup was 65 fps (no stutters) which is now down to 54 (with stutters looking left or right). Once up and flying, performance is also noticeably down as well with similar stutters when panning.
I will admit I’m on an older i7-3.20 Ghz CPU, 50 GB RAM, Windows 11, with a 2080ti card displaying on a 4k Gsync monitor. Understood that new versions can carry bigger overhead but this drop was more than I had expected. I’d consider 4.35 as very playable but 4.36 is now doubtful for my system.
I looked over some of the other posts from a few months back about FPS but didn’t really detect any smoking guns that I could check into. New hardware is out of the question so beginning to think the newer versions may be out of my playable range if similar drops are to be expected. Just curious, what was the actual solution that “solved” this support question?

RE: Ice’s Falcon BMS Profile Updated for BMS 4.37
PS Just curious, would there be any benefit to raising the RTT FPS setting from 30 to say 60? My touchscreen monitor refresh rate is set to 60-Hz so just wondering if there was a possible connection.

RE: Ice’s Falcon BMS Profile Updated for BMS 4.37
Many thanks for that Linknet! A noticeable improvement with that checkbox on my end. Ramp avg FPS improved to 57. In-flight FPS was improved even better.
If the display’s smoothness took a hit, it wasn’t very much as far as I could tell. Will give it a better run through this weekend.

RE: Ice’s Falcon BMS Profile Updated for BMS 4.37
I have a question relating to overall FPS impact using Helios and/or Ice’s Profile.
All is working great (BMS, Helios & Ice’s Profile) but have seen a 12~14 FPS drop when using Helios and BMS 4.35-U3. The comparison was done with a quick load of the 01-Ground Ops training mission and watched the FPS counts while sitting in 3d cockpit shows:
- No Helios/Ice = 63/64 avg FPS
- With Helios/Ice = 49/50 avg FPS
I’ve played around extensively with changing all the go-to Nvidia control panel settings and BMS graphic options. Safe to say, the “No Helios” averages are the best I’ll get (flying with 4k G-sync wide screen) so I’m fairly certain the big drop is directly related to running the profile. On a side note, the Benchmark_Test mission averages 28-30 FPS sitting in the cockpit on the ramp.
Main thing I’m asking…is that -12/15 FPS a normal drop to expect when using Helios profiles? Just want to make sure I’m not missing a parameter or “tweak” somewhere.
