X55 worth getting?
-
Just to add to the discussion.
Newbie here too and to be frank not hard to set up at all.
Although I’ve asked a couple of questions here the answers have been so obvious I’ve felt a bit of an idiot afterwards!
Another observation though…
I decided to set mine up totally in game and not by using the Saitek software. Mostly well but be aware…the key file.key does occasionally do some really weird things…like random assignments…well that’s my experience.

Gary

No i’m in the UK, and by the looks of it a good portion, i guess most people on here are in the US.

Hi Gary well at least it seems you know what “key file.key” refers to lol. So what is that? at a guess i’d say thats what keys are used on your keyboard for controls along with your X55?
-
Hi,
Just because I know what it’s called doesnt mean I understand it…lol…Although yes I think that’s what it means as you say.
I’ve read various key file threads like a dozen times and still have no idea frankly.
Uk here too btw…London.
Happy to share my key file if you want it - just let me know.

Gary

Which leads me to another question, how many controls do you have mapped on your keyboard? hopefully not many but i’m sure the most important and regularly used ones are on your X55.
-
@Gary - I am like you…all programmed thru BMS. By the way, my son just got back from a 10 day vacation with the wife to London. They had a great time.
@cns - The only thing I use the keyboard for is “Gear Up/Down”. I do not want to accidentally lower the gear by accident…just a precaution on my end.
@both - If you happen to own an 10.1 Android tablet, there is some additional options available for you…if do not want to use your mouse.

To be honest my hotas set up is pretty basic at the moment. I’ve set the stick up for pickle, gun, wheel brakes, tms, dms, trim and pinkie(although I’m not sure what this does yet) and chaff programme and my throttle for radar elevation and range. AA and AG master modes…air brakes…ecm toggle…uncage…air brakes…external lights…nws…zoom control (although I have track ir)…master arm…and cursor control.
Glad the family enjoyed london too!!
I do have a Android which would be great to get one of the mfds to??

My recommendation is below if you have a 10.1 Android tablet…no need to get mfds. Be sure to use the latest version of the Server and Apk.

Glad to hear they had a good time in old london town Drac. Gary i’m in tamworth not far from birmingham, sounds like an ideal mapping u got there.
Drac what stick u got? X55? didnt think there would be enough buttons/rotaries to assign everything to the X55 (except for landing gear as u say).

Another thing what do u se DMS/TMS for? and is there CMS too? what do they stand for?

I own the X-55. Remember, the HOTAS has 3 Modes…but I only use Mode 1. For Ramp Start, I use the mouse. Once the aircraft is started, I only use the keyboard for Gear Up/Down. Everything else is through the HOTAS and Tablet.

Ah gary- think the pinkie switch is used to toggle the stage of your trigger. As the X55 has only single stage for trigger so the pinkie when pressed (i think) will toggle the stage of the trigger. Dont think this applies to Falcon BMS as some joysticks’ triggers have 2 stages for guns and rockets, or guided weapons. Not sure about that tho im sure Drac will know.
Like i said if this is the reason for the pinkie switch, you got the pickle button to fire A-A guided and A-G weapons anyway, leaving the trigger for guns.

Install folder, Docs, Falcon BMS Manuals, BMS-dash1.pdf. CTRL-F, “DMS” or “TMS” or “CMS”. Same process if you have any avionics question

Right i got it, cheers.

Hm, looks very interesting. I’ve been looking for a replacement for my more-than-wobbly Cougar that’s slowly dying it seems… I need to retrieve / apply the settings via CCP before the microstick starts working and so on (tried re-flashing without success).
I’ve looked at the x-55 and am wondering if the dual throttle control (that what it looks like from the pics) can be combined into a single engine control? I’d think so, but I’d rather make sure.
Thanks, Uwe

Yea it does have a dual throttle so if you’re flying a plane with 2 engines you can control throttle for both, but if its just one engine (as in Falcon) then you just have both throttles click in place together so it makes just one, i watched a video on youtube about it the other day. So yea they combine into a single engine throttle control.

Hey Dracfalcon, when you said you have all controls binded to your HOTAS and tablet…well how do you have controls binded to your tablet exactly? and for those just playing with a ordinary desktop pc like me, can all 3 modes be used on the X55 so as to not have to bind any controls to the keyboard?

Yes, no problem. If you get a little more involved with programming you can can also unprogram one of the throttle’s axis. My situation is a bit unique as I have acquired both the -55 and -65. However, all is well as I have made the -55 throttle a switch panel and the left throttle my landing gear handle(by making it a banded control).
But, for basics don’t worry at all. Just set it up like the throttles were one piece. -

You can have all your commands programmed to all the buttons in Mode 1 only if you want and still not have to use the keyboard…but will still need to use your mouse. So with two other Modes available, there are all kinds of options you can do to reduce your dependency on the mouse (but most likely not 100%). However, with the Android tablet, I have my MFDs, ICPs, HSI, Air Brakes, ECM, RWR, DED, Autopilot, moving theater maps, etc. That is why I do not have to use the keyboard (except for Gears…my choice) or the mouse (except for Ramp Start).

Hi so i have my X55 and got it installed, just went into BMS and finding the setup a bit daunting. The list of controls looks endless and the name of some of those controls just looks alien to me. It seems some controls are already automatically binded like TMS,BMS,first trigger detent (which must be trigger for guns)…basically all buttons and hats on the stick are assigned to things i’d have them assigned to, although the left hat (or bowl) on the stick is assigned to POV which i’m guessing is point of view? to pan the cmaera round the cockpit? which i wont be using once i get my Delan clip.
Just went to try the basic handling TE and my plane was all over the place, had no control over it at all, it was like it had a mind of its own…help.
