Thanks man. I do think about the future of this project and that it will definitely take “4-6 weeks” iamfritz

YOU ! I love you !!! We need this legend in the skies !

I’m learning modelling from 0 as I go along, will sure have some questions throughout the process
-
I’m using Blender 2.76b for all modelling, it’s quite different from MAX in some regards, in others quite similar
Looking forward to any feedback you may have, Baby!
Pete,
nice to see you around, … where have you been, LOL?
While you start learning modelling from 0 as you go along, I wonder why you didn’t start with 3DS Max,
which is IMHO the preferred 3d modelling software for FBMS.
OK, Blender is free, but you might get lots of “bad geometry” when you export to .3ds someday.… will say, you’re using no freeware but PSP to create your skins for a good reason, so …
Nice project anyway, good luck.
Cheers,

Wow, you’re using blender, I had thought 3ds was a must for bms modelling. or are you intending to get the modelling mostly done in blender then take it to 3ds later in the development? If I can use blender I maybe should try to help out.
I have one I built in blender, it’s further along than yours at the moment and I’d be happy to donate it so long as I could still use it in whatever. Of course I fully understand if you don’t want to be working from someone else’s project because of the possibility of inheriting their mistakes.

I’m using Blender primarily because I looked into it briefly over a year ago and never really got going. Then I recently stumbled upon a Tiefighter tutorial based in Blender and it re ignited my motivation to get into 3D modeling.
At the moment I’m using this Tomcat exercise mainly to learn the ins and outs of the modeling regardless of program environment with the potential benefit of having something of use at the end of the initial modeling.
I don’t have the slightest clue as to what is most viable in terms of BMS implementation. I do realize the issue of bad polygonial geometry when going from say Blender to Max, that is an issue that can be taken care of mostly by manual clean up of the most common issues during the modeling.
However, right now the goal is a complete model in Blender. If at that point it turns out that I have to rebuild or adapt some parts or everything in Max then I’ll do that, for me this is all training and therefore no lost time.
If anyone has any clues like ‘stop wasting your time in Blender, if you ever had any hopes to see the model in BMS then build it from start to finish in 3Ds Max or not at all’ I’d appreciate it but it probably won’t keep me from deving this model at least to a certain point in Blender just cuz I’m really into that program atm. By the way I do think any geometry or other transfer problems can be overcome with it, just a question of how.
Finally, I don’t at all have a problem with collaboration but since this is partly a training exercise for me I do have the ambition and expectation to build it from scratch to a stage that I can live with within my quality requirements. That being said given the rights issue catastrophe with anything F-14 related I am very cautious in terms of using or taking over any material that isn’t my own.
Anyway, shoot me a pm and we can talk about it.

Starting in Blender and moving it to 3ds later would be my preferred approach if that is viable. I must say I prefer the Blender open source approach.
@lazystone: About that legacy vs open source argument, I use PS cuz I know it since 99 then version 5.5 not because there aren’t open alternatives that can do exactly the same if not more than Photoshop. Time it would take me to transition just outweighs any potential benefits as far as I’m concerned.
I’m pretty sure Blender can do anything 3ds can if not more but it is simply way less accessible and adoption rates are naturally much lower, hence I could well imagine BMS requiring certain best practice or technical properties that are best or only served by prepping the model in 3ds.

Great Job Pete!!!

“rights issue catastrophe with anything F-14.” yeah that’s a good way to sum it up.
I can tell you that I did make the whole model, and had blender make an ambient occlusion texture map, but then who am I but some (potentially untrustworthy) person on the internet…and after the aforementioned catastrophe who would want to take chances!
I much prefer blender as well. I don’t want to waste any of my time gaining skill with software that can be abandoned or only works on one platform. If you learn blender, then any internet connected computer in the world can be a useful 3d modeling platform.

Great start mate.
Let’s hope to see this legend finished (i’m also a great lover of Tomcat)!
Keep on it…

I just read WaveyDave’s “Modelling Org” thread and noticed the ‘Once you have staked your claim to a model and BMS knows about it you create a WIP thread to inform BMS about progress.’
I was unaware of that cuz I only read it now :). This is just a ‘WIP thread’ nothing official or a claimed stake.
I don’t get it man, you mean you have produced and finished a Tomcat model in Blender but now you don’t wanna take any chances?
As far as the modelling goes I’d go so far as to say if you learn Blender everything else is just rethinking keyboard shortcuts…though I doubt any other program has such refined keystroke combinations :).
Profile shot:
The blueprints are actually from 3 sources (front and top is one, side view another, bottom is a russian drawing, backside the fourth) all prepped in PS and then manually scaled to fit, in some areas actually taken from my textures for highest possible proportionality and fit. Like I said blueprints on the F-14 are little more than ‘guesstimates’ as I already figured during skinning for other models.

@Stingray
What I meant was: since you don’t know me, that I understand if you are not sure you can trust me when I state that I made the model myself and that it is all my own work.My model is further along, but not a whole lot. I built it to play around in a little 3d engine I’ve been building. It’s basically programmer art. I’d be happy to donate it to BMS, but since you are using this project to learn blender it probably won’t really save you any time.
-
Hello, nice start of the project!
However :
- Please remember that you will need 3dsmax to export your files into BMS ;
- You will need .3ds to configure ptypes and materials ;
- You will need .3ds for animations (DOF) ;
- You will need .3ds for switches…
It’s a nice idea to start with Blender, however, allow me to suggest you not to waste too much time on Blender. I suggest you to export your work ASAP on 3dsmax, because it is THE only tool that supports Waveydave excellent plugins.
Best regards, good luck for our Tomcat,
Radium

Alright got ya. That’s cool man my paranoia doesn’t go that far :). Would gladly take a look at your model, additional input never hurts.

Cool. That is the feedback I was looking for. Thanks for the info Radium.
Will continue using Blender for the ‘rough’ outline and then move it to 3ds before adding any of the fancy stuff :).

Hey guys,
dunno if anybody did try this yet:

finally !!! I love the F-14 …

Great news, stingray, it was time to get a pretty nice birdie which made the history of naval aviation… and made its figure in that silly movie too, in spite of all odds.
If I could, I’ll give you a hand with the little I can do.Best wishes and regards,
