New Player, Should I Even Bother?

Let me better rephrase what was said and is, by falcon legacy.
Falcon was to die many times in the past and those or such legal issues surfaced many times.
Still falcon is here, and believe us it will be.
For many is more than a religion, more than a way of life.Even if BMS team will be forced to step down, someone will raise the flag again.
So go ahead and plan as you please.

As far as multiplayer goes I would be more than happy to help anyone willing to learn. Just shoot me a pm and we can sort out a day and time to get online and blow stuff up.

Hey FastEagle102 here’s another voice cheering you to stick with Falcon BMS!
Im an almost total newb, having played original Falcon4 when it came out. Make sure you try one of the campaigns, as those are (even today) the most revolutionary persistent campaigns / air-ground wars i have ever seen in any game.
Be ready to die a lot while youre learning ofc. But the satisfaction of completing an important mission, or slowing enemy ground offensive, or noticing your situational awareness increase to the point of not flying into a wall of MiGs, ahh thats priceless. -
It is funny to see so many new comers who do not know the SP3/4, FF, and OF4.5 era …
Falcon4 is a phoenix whatever happens, do not worry.

This is starting to stray into territory which closes threads…

Hi guys,
I am recently making the transition from Strike Fighters 2. I downloaded the BMS 4.33 a few weeks ago before the take down. I’ve been watching the videos form Krause and others and studying the manuals on my tablet in my spare time. My girlfriend is a fellow gamer who has been cutting her teeth in Flight Simulator X the past 2 weeks learning to fly because she has an interest in BMS now as well.
So it boils down to this: with the recent 4.33 take down is it even worth it for me to install and try to learn if my ultimate goal is participate in multiplayer operations. Let’s talk worst case scenarios, a blanket take down notice for BMS mod. Can they also force the take down of the forum discussions which are invaluable resource? Can they stop people who already have the mod from organizing multiplayer at places like UOAF? Can they block the multiplayer functions somehow or the servers?
I really don’t know enough about the technical back end of multiplayer so I’m sorry if some of these questions seem unintelligent or uninformed. But I just want to know what you would do in my shoes as a brand new BMS fan wanting to play multiplayer because I really don’t want to regret putting the hours into a study simulation when I could have just jumped right into DCS World.
What would you do?
Just sit with the manual and go through the training missions. BMS isn’t as hard or steep a learning curve as people tell you. It matters on how interested you are and how much time you are willing to put in to learn that interest. I’ll tell you from first hand experience it really isn’t much it’s just repetition. Just do each thing over and over and over and over again till you know you can do it without thinking. Overall I tried DCS many times i know how to fly the A-10 only but really well and i just find BMS is just so much better. DCS feels like you aren’t “in” the sim. BMS feels like you are right there i can’t explain it better than that. One thing about BMS that tops every other sim out there is it’s Dynamic Campaign. I’ve never seen another done better infact not even close to it. As for Microsoft Flight Sim X make sure you practise a lot in the cessna 172 and download the Realair C172. From all my flight training I’ll tell you just practise Take off and landings and pattern flying. Keep your speed and altitude as steady as you can and understand the concept of slow flight and Angle of Attack and Trimming. these will help you out in any sim you try whether il-2 or DCS or BMS. also if you get your hands on Il-2 1946 it is a great game to learn flying and dogfighting on full realism only. Read about VOR’s and ILS in MSFS also these things will help you out a lot. Basically BMS is completely worth it and probably the best sim out there in terms of a modern jet flight sim.

Guys thank you so much for all of your inspiring replies. I feel much better about the situation now. I am very happy that multiplayer should somehow live on.
As for the guy who asked about my girlfriend she got interested in flight sims because she would watch Air Crash Investigation with me and her interest in aviation grew. She’s also of Israeli heritage and studied anthropology and history so she liked watching the episodes of Dogfights that have to do with the IAF since those are her people. When she saw me flying the F-16I in the Operation Darius mod campaign for IAF against Iranian nuclear reactors she became committed to learning to fly something IAF. I plan on teaching the F-16 in Strike Fighters 2 before Falcon BMS. Hopefully she doesn’t fall in love with the F-15 and switch over to DCS

Sounds like grounds for immediate dismissal
-
Hey man it’s a valid concern, shes more of an IAF type in general, not in love with any specific aircraft.
Personally I am coming to BMS because its cheaper than DCS and I crave multiplayer. I’m not sure I’ll stick with the Viper either, I might eventually end up in the Hornet. I’ve spent a lot of time doing Hornets in FSX and SF2.
-
The Hornet is beautiful with 4.33. Definitely another fantastic reason to move to BMS. As far as IAF goes, once Falcon Online is back up and running they do a Sinai campaign between Israel and Egypt. It is absolutely stunning. The IAF Viper is gorgeous. Also there is no multiplayer experience like a Falcon BMS experience. With people running AWACS and GCI and multiple flights up at once the immersion is fantastic.
Really BMS can’t be beat. Just my two cents though.

…abandon all hope, ye whom enter here. At least for 3-4 weeks…maybe more.

OK, Falcon Online was mentioned above. They provide a fantastic multi-player service with their own Teamspeak comms channels, specially tweaked campaigns/theaters and a great many participants. Check them out here:
They are currently preparing for their next online campaign in the Balkans theater. Several squadrons also provide a companionable place to fly with comrads. Your girlfriend will soon discover that FSX may be fun to fly around in for awhile, but can not begin to provide an air combat experience anything like BMS.

From a long time FSX flier, you are correct, brother.

+1 falcon online is definitely the place to get some online action.
-
Yeah she has no plans to stay in FSX, she just has zero simulator experience so right now she is learning basics in the Cessna 172 and messing around with the Learjet 45 and F/A-18.
How does Falcon Online work? Does it run in seasons like the Starcraft 2 ladder? If I miss the signup for the campaign do I have to sit out or can I jump in whenever?
-
Falcon online usually runs a 24/7 coop server where you can jump in anytime. Then about every 2 months I think they run a force on force. Registration opens a couple weeks before and you pick your side. Reg it’s normally open till seven days into the war which is actually a week since once the server opens it runs 24 hours a day for about three weeks. So as long as you get your name in on time you can fly as much or as little as you want. Generally for new guys they won’t let you join force on force until you’ve been around for a while and can confirm that you are comfortable with the basics of flying the SIM.
-
Falcon Online operates a dedicated, extremely stable, server that continuously runs a Falcon BMS campaign, read online war 24/7, until one side achieves victory, which takes up to 4 weeks. An interested pilot signs up with Falcon Online folks to fly for either the red or blue side. Pilots can watch the campaign progress and either join a flight someone else has planned or plan his own mission to advance the war effort for his/her side. Very often a human will be providing weapons controller (AWACS) info in real time. Falcon Online provides one of the more challenging multi-player experiences you will find.
-
To get experience Falcon Online is by far the best place because the coop server is set up more to practice and show people the ropes rather than to win the campaign. It’s an excellent place to practice skills in between force on force campaigns. Also the FO community is full of people with years of experience in the sim and are always willing to help out new pilots.
