Oculus Rift

The BMS software doesnt do it, is the problem. BMS doesnt display more than 140 degrees FoV at a time. And it doesnt let you have more than one camera, else it would be easy.
-
Yes - you’d need one projector for every 140 degrees of sightline (and I think BMS will let you do that for at least three 140 degree fields, from what I’ve seen on VP). Not to mention that I could think of a few ways to get around that by slaving BMS physics to some other OTW model from shared memory…and running multiple machines, net-slaved.
…but we’re back to $$$ and space again.
-
BMS lets you have one display. Not three - otherwise Id be a lot less interested in the Rift.

how’d you handle the rift in bms then, the rift needs 90+ fps at all times (same as with vive) in order to give a good experience. even if the fps that we get right now massively improves it will still dip below the 90 fps at times.
and having a pit with a rift you would have to find all buttons blind as you cannot see your own hand, i think i’d prefer having a mouse and still click the buttons as opposed to having an invisible hand floating around somewhere i can’t see.i don’t think BMS is ready yet for rift even on the really powerfull rigs that are running it right now. not unless we lower the graphics by a mile and a half
-
I could run 4.32 with 90+. As for finding buttons blind, I have good muscle memory. Done enough blindfold tests practicing the piccolo and checking my other physical panels and ICP that I would be happy enough not being able to see my hand.
-
4.32 is old news now though with 4.33 out, and just for the weather engine alone i’d prefer a fully immersed 3d experience in that as opposed to 4.32.
and running 4.32 at 90+ was fairly do-able except in really tough situations (not even dropping the pc buckling B61) but i’ve yet to see 4.33 run 90+ on my system (unless i turn all the eye candy off)

…plenty of folks over on VP are running BMS using three projectors. That’s the Cadillac setup, and how I plan to fly.
Here’s one of the best examples - the setup here is a 180 degree surround, augmented with an EDTracker:
He’s since bought one of these…at least I think it’s from these folks -
http://www.simpit.co.nz/index.php/products/icarus-centurion
and is setting up to go 270 degrees, which is what I want to do…only I plan to build my own screen surround with some additions to this basic idea.
-
Plenty of folks use 3 monitors, too. Its still just one display, though, spread across 3 monitors. And due to the 140 FOV limit for that one display, you cant use it as a static display to look behind you.
-
…how many times do I have to say I don’t care about looking behind me?
My main point is that the combined FOV is wide enough for what I wish to do…I don’ t really care how BMS does it, I just know it does it well enough for me!
-
At least once more, so long as you continue to suggest it as a solution for me .
-
Not for you, for ME. Anytime I talk about my setup I hope folks realize I’m only talking about my own experience and design criteria…folk can try and change my mind, but I have a pretty hardened set of design criteria. YMMV.

If this is true I think this will be a huge showstopper for most of the ppl around… Let’s hope that the end user can close the network traffic/ports etc to prevent unwanted accesses…

It doesn’t track you like a big brother. It tracks
Logs if Oculus Home hits an Error
The amount of time it takes Oculus Home to open after telling it to start opening
Your minimum, maximum, and average frame rate
How long it takes to enter or exit a subsection (subsections include the home environment, setup, the grid room, safety warning, etc.)
The application that sent the analytics, the version of Oculus Home that sent it, the version of the Oculus Plugin that sent it.
How long it takes to close Oculus Home
How long you spent in Oculus Home total
Amount of memory usage (may only be when an error is sent)
What VR application you have open (if any) that was launched from Oculus Home
Oculus Waterfall (no clue what this means, but seems related to in app purchases)
When you start an in app purchase (I’m pretty sure an in app purchase means buying anything in the Oculus store, including games)
If you cancel an in app purchase
If you make an in app purchase
How much the in app purchase cost
If you failed to enter your pin correctly during an in app purchase
How much time you spent on each section of making an in app purchase
There’s also one other special case where Oculus sends the fact that it sent Analytics (along with what type of Analytics it sent) through the Oculus Store’s net code.Pretty much useful things.

Following the rift launch for the past weeks, I am not longer sure about Oculus’ future:
The order process: What a mess. Starting with a missing comma in the price (how the **** can that happen?) in a non functional shop system, missing confirmation e-mails, no order status and so on. Wow.
The shipping delays. Do they really dont start production until after the preorders arrive? Huh? They don’t test the process upfront, building up stock… oh man.
Now the disturbing high rate of defects! Wtf is qoing on there? You read about dead rifts and stuck pixels everywhere!
The overwhelmed support with much to high turn-around times and ridiculous answers (such as work on genereating return label being in progress for days…). One is tempted to ask what is actually overwhelming the support: With those few rifts out until now…
Now the new software release, at least fixing the most embarrassing bugs (such as the only c-drive issue). But even then it is fixed only half heartenly, as it still seems not to be possible to have game libraries on different drives independend from where the oculus software is installed. However- people trying to download the software cannot easily find it. Which is why now the anger over this crappy homepage takes over. It really is a mess, being a webdev myself there is no other way to name it and no excuse to it.
Finally now the comments of Palmer Luckey, who after quite a few days of absence seems to have left his buddy-attitude at home, now ranting rude and sarcastic comments towards the folks. Whereas it is worth another remark alone, that the Oculus folks are posting on reddit instead of running an own support forum in a professional manner.
All this hits the people while they are also eagerly awaiting Touch controllers and now have fears of running into the same mess and trouble once again with the Touch release! What if touch doesn’t release in time or doesnt release for CV1 at all? What if quality and support is just as poor as right now with the Rift CV1? Even if you’re lucky enough to get a functional Rift, you’d still be stuck with only half the experience, as I would assume that the vast majority of users also has signed up for touch controllers and is hoping to get a similar experience as the Vive now provides out of the box.
It is just that you simply wouldnt expect any of this from a multi-million dollar Facebook owned high tech company that seemingly has just managed to develop and produce a superb VR headset. I wouldnt hardly be suprised if hardware quality turns out to be the next problem.
This all combined with the latest comments of Palmer denying those website problems, it is no suprise for people simply losing trust in Oculus, especially when they have set their mind and hopes on a rift combined with touch controllers.
Ah- and not to forget those privacy issues / objections with background processes!Calling a quit on all this and just ordering a Vive just now is completely reasonable: Most likely it would still arrive earlier than the average first 24 hours rift preorder, it would have motion controls included and up to now defective units do not seem to be a problem, either.
My message to Oculus would be, if they know of any hardware quality issues, they’d do themself a favour by stop shipping asap and fixing those problems first. Maybe they’d have to give the touch controllers out for free for those affected by another delay as an excuse. But whatever they do - if now arises any bad press about the rifts hardware quality, they’re done. Simple as that.
I am excited to see how this thing evolves. Until now, this launch is about as fubar as it gets.
Will Oculus manage to sort it out or will they foxtrott uniform completely? -

That plus the price range, lack of a killer app, I think the VR will go back to sleep as it did in the 90s

I doubt it. Not only is the tech better, the big money is more behind it this time and that will make the real difference. These problems are a temporary thing that even if it has a somewhat lasting effect for OR, it will just mean the Vive will take the lead.
-
agreed. I was doubting Oculus specifically, not VR in general.
Also I dont see the price as an issue: If it really works, it brings so much benefit, the price is easily justifyable, i.e. compared to other projector / display + headtracking solutions.
With regards specfically to FalconBMS, looking at my modded Cougar with Simpeds, a Rift would not even be my most expensive simulation gadget. Well… if it would be even usable for Falcon, it wouldnt even be just a sim gadget as the cougar, but a more general purpose thing. So pricing I think is not so bad.
But it certainly has (and is expected) to work in the first place. -
