4.33.1 will release shortly: what you need to know and how to be prepared

I fail too see why having to thank just another company that is trying to make money from the work others do for free and for the community.
As you say? My money went to Microprose in 1998, so I install BMS (remember that to install any past version of BMS will be required on the PC executable original F4?).
People who do not have that requirement is contrary BMS requirements for installation. Until now, that was a vicious circle because the original program was not marketed, so that admitted the “trick” to make the installation required by BMS.
Now, you can purchase the program F4 to access BMS. 6.99 USD (approx. 5 €). In Ibiza that charge for a bottle of 125 ml wáter
And if I do not like that much or little money raised not go for BMS who actually will sell copies, but at least the current situation is totally legal, BMS can follow the development, and new users can legally access the program at minimal cost.
All have dreamed this situation would have been 10 years ago, IMHO

Just to clarify, in Steam Spain it is 7€ (smart guys in Steam…). And to let it clear, in Spain, a 500ml bottle of water coast about 1€. In Ibiza, if you buy that in an exclusive Disco bar, it will be 5€… Like in every exclusive place
Sorry for the offtopic but I had to.
Have fun! -
Well, finally, the number of BMS pilots is no longer limited to the number of copies sold back then.

TBH: if i find an original Falcon 4.0 i still buy them and pay up to 20 EUR, depending on version. The cheapest was just the original disc for 1,90 EUR + 4 EUR shipping.

First step made. Found my F4.0 CD (there was a Polish edition ca 2000, I think it’s identical to the US version, only the manuals were translated, everything in-game is in English), ran the installation, patched to 1.08 and started the sim - it works! I can actually fly the viper even though I can hardly remember the vanilla F4 as I purchased my copy at the time when RP5 was en vogue, then came the superpacks, BMS and all the dance we remember - oh, so well!
Waiting patiently for further development of the events… Not without some doubts, though.
-
Thanks devs for all your efforts! I have been waiting this news for 3-4weeks!
I have an question. Won’t 2 or more installation of original Falcon4.0, e.g. GOG version and Steam version, on same PC disturb installation and launch of BMS4.33.1? I have both of them installed and would like to update one of them to some earlier version of Falcon MODS like as SUPERPAK or REDVIPER to see the history of Falcon.

BAD idea, that would mean the guys with hard copys are ****ed …
Not the case, you did not read my suggestion clearly… as it would not prevent any current users from accessing it: my suggestion was for in the event no install was found. Guys with hard copies would just install it…

Arty, didn’t you see Boxer say “There should be no impact on theater development.” ?
I don’t understand why you are looking for bad things that aren’t there.
Also, Blu, I don’t understand why you are asking for more complex DRM. A 150mb install is going to be a hard drive space killer ?
To be honest I am annoyed by every bit on my HDD that isnt in use. Programs get uninstalled, files are wiped… I do happen to have a pretty space limited file system, but that isnt really the issue. Its more just that its bloating the system further - dead space on the drive. That frustrates me. Windows features I dont use get deleted, registry entries no longer used are removed. For the immediate future it looks like I will be installing a program I wont use.
Im very glad there is a solution that allows BMS to be distributed again, but I am not a fan of the mechanics of the chosen solution, and I intend to advocate for an alternative solution as long as proves necessary. As mentioned above, I think there are alternatives that would suit everyone’s purpose better.

I made a couple of copies years ago of my falcon 4 cd. just installed one to test install and it works. Glad I did as my original cd broke whilst coming out of drive. is this all I need for 4.33.1, or do I need to purchase a new license. many thanks bms team great result.

Says it clearly you may not use, copy, modify, transfer….
So we are toast.
Boxer says clearly that Tommo is allowing BMS to continue their development. So we are NOT toast. I do not understand this doomsdayer tendency to seek/proclaim problems/drama that does not exist…

Honestly “I” don’t care much about your views on that one. When you compare to what could have happened your feeling of the matter really is irrelevant.
furthermore, I really feel that kind of comment is nothing but egocentric ! -
@Red:

furthermore, I really feel that kind of comment is nothing but egocentric !I am astonished that there are still people on this forum that are complaining about spending the money for a couple of glasses of beer in order to have access to one of the best (free) flight sim, (or even PC game for that matter) enhancements ever made available.
For those who still resent the pittance of the cost of getting legitimate copies of Falcon 4.0 - please remain with BMS 4.33 and stop moaning. I think we have already had more than our value from money, those of us that bought legit copies some time ago. Ever heard of ‘no such thing as a free lunch’?
Rant over, Jetlag out. -

Hi Everyone:
It is my pleasure to be able to tell you that the BMS team has reached an agreement with Tommo, current owners of Falcon 4.0 copyrights, that will allow us to resume making Falcon BMS community add-on releases now and for the foreseeable future with Tommo’s approval.
The biggest visible change is in how the installer and the game executable launch.
If you have Falcon 4.0 resident on your local system, then the first visible difference you will see is a new splash screen. That screen shows a Falcon BMS logo and logos for Tommo, Retroism and the BMS team together with copyright and trademark statements that outline terms of use. You will note from this that the Falcon BMS community add-on is made and distributed with permission from Tommo. That permission is conditioned on the install and runtime checks mentioned above as well as reinforcing that, in line with the BMS team’s long-time policy, Falcon BMS is only available for non-commercial uses. The splash screen is displayed in time that is used to load the game in the background so, in other words, no additional start up time should result from the splash screen (compared to earlier Falcon BMS versions).
If you do not have Falcon 4.0 installed on your local system then the next thing you will see is a Windows message box pop-up that tells you that the installer or the game is unable to find a copy of Falcon 4.0 on your system. The message box has a button to dismiss it (once you have read the message) and then the game will exit immediately. As I said, if you have used Falcon BMS before then you should already have Falcon 4.0. However, for those who may be new to the community, the message box mentions some possible sources of licensed copies of Falcon 4.0 that you may like to use to acquire a legitimate copy if you need to do that. Other sources are possible and viable; for instance private sale or eBay to find a copy of the [increasingly-rare] original hard-copy game materials. [Note there were some issues with copies of Falcon 4.0 purchased from Steam (it was made available there in January 2016) – these are now resolved as we helped Tommo get the Steam install process working correctly – thus Steam is a viable (and convenient??) source for copies of Falcon 4.0 if you need one.]
Having purchased this on Steam with no possible way to install the Falcon 4.0. This seems on its face a little disappointing, I will again be patient and see if this is workable, Although from the above description I don’t see how this is going to work.

Rant over, Jetlag out.Sometimes the free lunch is better than the paid for lunch though, both on a financial and quality level to be honest. I’m talking about games here who’s DRM system was such pain in the ass for the actual buyers, that they sometimes went to use a pirated version because it just was a lot hassle free to use.
Anyway, that is beside the point for BMS as far as I’m concerned.
Is having to install F4 a nuisance compared to how we were able to run BMS? Yes, and if you don’t think so then you lack serious objectivity.
Is it a nuisance worth whining about? Not really considering the size is so small for today’s systems. But I can fully understand that some people don’t like having registry entries and files in general on their system if they like keeping it spick & span.Bottom line as far as I’m concerned. We’ll get used to it in no time and nobody’s every gonna mention it again. It’s just a slight growing pain
