Norton Anti-Virus Security Threat
-
I am trying to do a brand new install of Falcon BMS. When I try any of the downloads on the download page, i.e. the torrent download, the mirror download e-HAF or the mirror download weapondeliveryplanner.nl, Norton says that the file, directx_jun_2010.bsf, is a threat and has been removed. Then Falcon BMS will not install without this file. Norton gives the option to restore and exclude this file from their security scan. So, is this file really a threat?

The only true threat is Norton
No, no threat.

I’ll go ahead and download again. Until I’m successful with no problems with that file, you better check six:)
Thanks Badger.

When trying to connect to the BMS forum on my simpit computer my firewall is detecting a problem. Could one of the BMS website administrators comment on this alert and possibly take action if needed?
Thank You -
I had Norton for the past two years.
Never encountered such an untrusty false positive AV that makes so much sounds and wistles, destroys every good software and fails so miserably at actual protection.
Stay away from it like fire from hay. -

False positive on an internal version of the pre-release installer …. which you couldn’t access if you tried.
In my experience the solution to this problem is the deletion and future avoidance of Norton/Symantec products.
-
Alternative is to not use the torrent and use the direct mirror - there is one on the Releases page now…that’s what I used.

The error identified has nothing to do with a torrent v a direct download.

My bad…this is an installation problem, not a delivery problem…mea culpa…

To clarify. That virus alert was from doing a google search for BMS.
-
Is there a response from the web administrators?
I believe this is a fixable alert with some tweaking at the website end. -
The fix, kind sir, is to dispose of bloat ware Norton.
-
To me, Norton is a virus.

Okay guys - I don’t want to get in to a big argument here - but if you look in my initial post I was asking for a website administrator to comment on this alert. Maybe someone with knowledge of the site’s security could get this resolved since I don’t think it is an actual virus. But this is an alert what someone might encounter with their browser when doing a BMS search. Wouldn’t think that is what BMS wants…
Some of you have a problem with Norton - fine, don’t really care, not really interested. I posed a serious question - was looking for a serious answer. Your suggestions to get rid of my firewall/anti-virus protection is not a solution and it is, putting it kindly - not smart.
If the BMS web admins don’t want to respond or aren’t interested in resolving the issue - that’s up to them. If they do they can PM me as I’m pretty sure I know how to resolve the false positive - assuming that is what it is.
-
I’m/we’re saying it’s NOT a site issue, it’s a Norton issue. The recommendation is NOT to get rid of AV/Firewall, but to get rid of Norton and get something ‘better’.
I DO get you want a response from an admin, hence why I had stopped posting after you repeated your request yesterday, but you seem to misunderstand the advice being suggested, and I don’t see where an admin would be interested making some unknown ‘site change’ to accommodate a single faulty AV platform.
My $0.02 and I hope you get some input from an admin …. but don’t get your hopes up that you’ll hear what you want to hear.

I don’t think I am misunderstanding - you basically saw the error I posted from Norton, didn’t bother to research the details and then declared the alerting software should be removed for something better - presumably something that will not show an issue. Interesting problem solving skills.
My take on this was a simple fix so that Norton would not find a false error (presuming there is none), and while the responders here aren’t interested in this - I thought the BMS team might be.
No need to respond any further - we can just close this topic. Its kinda pointless discussing this any longer.
-
Not a Norton expert but the link mentioned is from a dev link (probably the dev forum) and the zip looks like an internal version release?
Just saying.
Maybe dev zip has inside a mechanism to check things out and could be this recognized as a thread.sent from my Xperia Z3 compact via TapaTalk

We are aware that some security software sometimes have issues with BMS, cheers for the heads up, however you have nothing to worry about. As for the error message, we will see what can be done.

jcoom,
While your are correct with aswers mainly directed against Norton with checking the issue itself…there is something which you are missing and which some of us try to help you with…
The use of Norton is mostly, in my experience, very frustrating and dangerous to one’s computer health.
Throughout my usage with it it kept deleting, quarantine, damage and mess with many legitimate softwares from legitimate companies.
Let alone simulator softwares which tend to communicate through the internet for MP.
I got to a point where about 80% of its activity was disabled by me and almost every software was excluded from its checks.
I lost count of the softwares that stop functioning because of it…with some totalized because the files erased by it couldn’t be recovered.
I know that it sounds absurd with such a known and allegedly respected company…but…it is my experience that it does anything but keep your computer healthy and the standards it works by are not clear to me…tough there are some softwares it never messes with (such as made by Microsoft or Adobi)…In short…after so many “attacks” by Norton against my own computer, most without any sound reason, I don’t try to understand why for its algorithms work in a far superior way to my simple mind
I just shy away from it and mess with what’s important…,
