F-4 Phantom

Thanks for the elaborate reply. Sounds very good like we can rig every last little moving piece.
Yes, the F-14 control surfaces are all on the wing. Slat (LEF), both flaps and spoilers plus the entire wing which is a DOF itself I guess. If I understand correctly I can even rig the eyebrow and cove door which are two additional surfaces on the wing creating smooth surfaces when flaps are deployed for landing. As far as the functionality goes I know exactly how it all moves and is actuated in RL so I just have to ‘translate it to DOFs’ and you’re right, it is one rotational and one translation DOF for the flaps as they move back and down, same for the slat. Spoilers and doors only have one rotation plus the actuators.
Looking forward to your P H A N T O M. And interesting comment re the fixed slat in the stabilizer - never noticed that before.
Good stuff!

Yup… -F never had them… and early versions. In the navy (someone correct me if im wrong) S and J with -S adapting also the lefs. By the way… EJ also didnt NEVER had the lefs… Dont know why Mitsubishi when they where making them didnt adapt ever the lefs. also other Air-ground capabilities of the Phantom… As u can understand is one of my favorite airplanes. thats why im taking my time on making her. I have about 4 models here and another 3 in my vacation house (lol) most of them 1/48 and 1 in 1/32 IT IS BIG
hahahahahok back to the point. I dont think you will need both Translate and rotate dofs. As i told you if you just use translate and give the gizmo arrow of the dom some corner looking downwards it will work fine. I did it with the inward lefs

If you are done with this project……skin request:
The closest thing we dutch came in having our own Phantom… http://www.opschaal.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=587

Hmmmm interesting… might look it up when i will have the final Psds. Is it same as the german camo in general or not?

yes, dutch airforce personal hit this F-4F when they visit there, Twenthe Airforce Base, I think that it was because their home plate was in repair. They use the ducht roundels and squadrons markings for this job. In those these this was a common practise among Nato squadrons; (normal a small sticker or smart remark, this was big)

Will this be an F-4F or an F-4F ICE/KWS? Any interest in making a Kurnass 2000?
-
F version its on the wait list as for Kurnass i have issue on how to make the refuelling probe. It is also on the list and as soon as i found a way to make the part will do it

To all the 3ds max geeks there… Is there a plugin or a modifier i can use to reduce the poly/tri count without major losses ??? Pro otimizer does som good job but i have too much loss in detail…

If you don’t mind sharing, where are you at right now in terms of tris count?
I don’t have a quick solution but if you’re somewhat handy with 3d modeling in my experience the quickest and most effective way is to simply manually go into the model and check for convoluted or overly complex geometry and simplify it yourself.

76k… for my rig is ok. But i want an evenly good version for people with smaller pcs…without start to deleting stuff

Somewhere before some years in an Airshow….
The skins are just for display. nothing is 100% ready skinwise untill i get the psd’s
@Uwe…. the “special” i was talking about… -
By the way, cause in the same time im making experiments with wings model. Is it ok as it is now? Any suggestion will be appriciated
I made it preety close to the original cause the original has the wings more "up and towards cockpit so u can see actually the wing.

Check my F-4C/D/DSK wing model. It gives you a good idea what to shoot for…
-
She looks nice.
Just little feelings : I might have designed the wingtip more horizontally and the splitter plate should be more visible from the front seat.
Many thank’s for the huge job. -
Latest update on AUP. Fixed some shading issues and some vertices that werent aligned. Plus i use the skin Raptor gave me… so here is a debate for u guys. This skin or the skin i created? colorwise i mean.

This one…

It’s simply not in me to disagree with Jan. They’re both good but Raptor’s tends just a bit more towards great. Which brings me to your work: AWESOME!!!

Any luck with reducing the tri count?

Im around 70k right now but i deleted stuff that really didnt need to be TOO much. The Model as a model for its original purpose had a built in 3d cokpit. The cockpit only it self is almost 20k I cut some hands and shoes (witch, come on really, who’s gonna see the hands and the shoes of the pilots) and deleted some other stuff that for my persπective was too much. Other than that i havent yet tried a trick i saw about deleting loops of vertices. I did a test but in LE triangles where still there
Plus if you overdo it it leaves some gaps in places. Therfore im not quiting in the Low poly. im sure i will find the way. I did it before for a test and the model was quite good. Therefore it was too long and slow proccess and many times i was back almost where i started. My good old text book i next to me though and i keep notes in everything it is succeeded so. Anyway i dont see any real performance hit. The E-F version i have exported is more light for example (not too much antennas here and there
) its around 64k so i have a glimpse where i hit to reduce the polys. Mainly pieces u dont see and delete “unused” things or things your eye will not go easy. Maybe change the pilots also to a lower poly… will see…Till now the good news is AUP,TM2020,E,ESK,F are ready. and i gotta work in Kurnass and EJ. thats all the news!

When i worked on the peace ikarus II program in Greece my impression is that Raptors skin looks more realistic. The contrast between the paint on ac skin and the panel screws (opened later during maintenance) are correct. But when you see all this original pictures you will see all variants of usage on the ac. This depends from the houres since last overhaul or complete paintjob.
