I've been away for a while…...I want to smell it
-
Ok Folks.
I have been out of the game for a VERY……VERY……long time. Some of you might remember me back from Frugals. Anyway, I’m interested to know what would be the ideal system for this. I currently don’t have a machine with the horsepower to run this, but from what I’ve seen, I’m going to need it. I’ve read the FAQ, but I’d like to know what you think, hardware wise, I’ll NEED to make this go, and go RIGHT.
Next, I’d like to know about the 3d cockpit. Is it clickable, or will it be keyboard command only? It’s kind of frustrating to know which button to push or switch to flip but can’t put your finger on it. If it isn’t, oh well, but call me old school when I say I’m still not sold on the 3d pit thing. Speaking of which, I’d assume a trackIR is required, more or less, to get the best mileage out of this.
I watched the video, and from what I’ve seen, things have come a LONG LONG way since I was last airborne. I’m old enough to remember when the HARMS and SHRIKES didn’t work right unless you had them on external view. Can somebody get me up to speed as to what I might expect as to the learning curve I’d be climbing after I get a system in place?
Also I have a VERY old Thrustmaster Cougar rig thats just itching to do it’s thing…but the only drivers and programs I have for it are currently WinXP. Has Thrustmaster supported the drivers and software for newer OS’s available out there?
Thanks
Gunner

Hi Gunner,
Frugals, well ehh yeah, that’s a long way back
A few things: one of the major things wanted back then were the clickable 3d cockpit: well, it’s there. Fully integrated stuff, incorporated advanced FM, weaponry, delivery methods, multiplayer capabilities, you won’t recognise the old days. Perhaps for the UI
Your hotas will work fine and should work ‘right out of the box’ as all dx buttons are mapped for you.
You do however, have to read up LOT’s of stuff also the training missions: they have become real study material (thanks to e.g. Red Dog and the BMS team!!!)
high regards,
Fan(Frugals c/s : “ADutch”)
hope to see you in the skies

“Commander Cole! How you doin’, I’m Chief Boone! Come right this way, Commander Camparelli’s waitin’ for ya!”
Welcome back sir!

Welcome back to F4! As said, no bother getting Cougar drivers or foxy running with modern OS. There a couple of fiddly bits, but nothing difficult. I, as well as many others, have mine running in W10 x64 just fine. Well, I did until I broke the gimbals, but that’s the excuse I need to buy an FCC3

Highly recommended.

stay with win7 if you can, esp. if you’re on a cougar. Many folks seem to have problems with the cougar on win10 (I won’t even mention the current privacy / update nightmare that is win10).

TrackIR is priced outrageously, you’ll get the same functionality and better build quality using the DelanClip, a standard webcam or ps3/eye with Opentrack or FaceTrackNoIR and you’ll have some cash to spare for other deskpit gear (2nd monitor for display extraction, cougar mfds and so on, the list just keeps groing as you get deeper into the hobby :D)
Welcome back & enjoy the ride!

Frugals now there’s a blast from the past
but for your questions
what would be the ideal system for this

3d cockpit. Is it clickable, or will it be keyboard command only?
Both you can click or use keyboard
trackIR is required
Not required BUT highly Recommended

Learning curve would be pretty steep as a lot of things have changed over the years luckily however there are some great tutorials videos around that will help out
personally nothing like joining an online squad to get you upto speed and have great flying experience’sThrustmaster Cougar
there are drivers out there for newer O/systems I run win10 and have the cougar running without any issues here + winxp is not supported anymore by M$ so I would upgrade that as you would get better FPS with newer O/systems due to their better memory management.
Thinks that’s all your Q’s sorted out

Gunner, my brother, welcome back.
Great to see another old Frug Sad Bastard.
Do you miss the IDOD? Maybe we should start a new one here.
Get on the stick.

Nope, no thank. I’m vastly approaching 1k here, and I experienced 6 or more IDODs back at Frugals. I still can’t sit down properly…

BTW Gunner seriously suggest you swap your OS out to W7/64. Great movie BTW…“I want to smell it”.
And yeah you will have to relearn the piccolo.

Yeah I’m a decrepid old dinosaur……What I saw on the video clip blew me out of the water. I’m not against three 3 pits, but I want to be able to “push the buttons” so to speak. The one thing is I obviously have to buy the hardware to make this go. How does this stuff run on Win10?

Well first things first, boys. I haven’t flown in a LONG time. I got to buy a new system before I can even get airborne. That’s why I was wondering about the “Horsepower” it takes to run this. I know what the FAQ says……But what does it take to REALLY make this go? We exceeded the max specs for Falcon (in the manual) a LONG time and were still building systems to keep up. I’m just wondering what you guys ACTUAL mileage is to make this monster go (and I can see it IS a monster). Right now I don’t have anything with the horsepower to make this run correctly, and I can see it’s going to take a substantial investment to get a system that has the guts to make this run with all the bells and whistles.
Mower, old freind, I’ve missed you. Last time I talked to you you were flying for a virtual airlines. How does the F18 work and carrier ops? Did they manage to model twin engine operation and perhaps an on board fire extinguisher? Facinated by all the changes, and REALLY curious about how deep they’ve gone with the aircraft and the weapons.

Thank you everybody for all the input. It’s really appreciated. Is there any way, by chance, the manuals could be acquired in PDF format? Like to read up on whats going on before I start out of the gate (as I said before, I don’t currently have a system with enough guts to make this run)….but I’d like to get ahead of the curve.
Mower, have you by chance seen Makobyte around anywhere? Got looking for some of my old crew, but never managed to find anybody but you, boss. Heard out of anybody?

Hey Gunner, at a minimum I would recommend a 4th gen or newer i5 or i7 chipset with a decent motherboard. Pair that with a GTX 970 or better, a good power supply, a case with good airflow and a few good fans and you should have a pretty solid machine at a reasonable cost. Of course, the more you spend, generally speaking, the better your PC will run.

But BMS smells so good - It’s like, - Italian food…!

How does the F18 work and carrier ops?
Its okay. The cockpit is not bad but the avionics are all still the F16’s. Carrier ops are okay, the meatball doesn’t work and there’s no LSO nor deck crew. The mechanics of the carrier launch are very basic. Cant even raise the or lower the launch bar nor set trim.
To be frank, I am awaiting the DCS F18C as my main Hornet mount.

Re PC hardware: A good source is Tom’s Hardware quarterly assessments of PC components for home assembly.
