Please verify my TGP/GBU procedures are correct.

Flying Solo, and codes are set. I may be releasing too late, then. Will experiment some more.

Ok, trying to use GBU-12s for CAS and failing miserably.
So, I’ve got the laser in COMBAT mode, and on, obviously. I’ve got the mover painted with a good lock in “Point” mode. I pickle the weapon when the claret is at the top of the “Staple”. I’m at 300kts, and 20K altitude. Misses every time.
However, it is cloudy. So if at any time clouds get in the way, will the weapon always miss? No matter if the laser is still painting the target?
I’m trying to use GBUs instead of Mavericks because I keep getting my arse handed to me by MANPADS. I just can’t seem to do CAS correctly at all.
Try to launch from 16,000 too, and compare.

As far as laser and clouds, yes… especially at end game. Try to keep clouds from interferring when the L is flashing. May have to see about flying around clouds or diving below them (if safe)
-
I pickle just as the release cue bounces back up 1 tick off the FPM and hit almost every time. I really don’t watch the “staple” on the right side of the HUD. As to clouds I can’t help you with that because I just started flying bad weather missions and haven’t noticed. Certainly if the TGP indicates anything other than the flashing “L” (i.e. LM or I forgot the other indicator) you’re not lasing. But the flashing L is not a guarantee the laser is hitting, it only indicates it is firing. At least according to the training manual.
“After bomb release a flashing L does not specifically
mean that the bombs are guiding. It only confirms
that the laser is firing. But it could fire through clouds
and dissipate, preventing the weapon from guiding.
The only valid indication that the target is actually
being lased correctly is when the range is valid and
preceded by the L mnemonic.”From page 99.
But also you didn’t say whether or not you are getting a blinking L all the way down. If you turn too sharp and-or fast or are going too fast, you’ll end up masking the laser (normally this happens to me only a few seconds before the bomb is due to hit) and then the bomb does miss when that happens to me. So be careful of your turn off target doesn’t end up masking the laser.
-
I’m getting the blinking L, and this time I watched the thing from weapon view. I managed to hit the first tank, then came around for another pass. This time the weapon started to guide, but decided it was more interested in a patch of grass 200 yards away and dove right at it. Of course I wasn’t in the cockpit so clouds might have caused that one. I think my problem was releasing too late. Thanks for the help, gents.

Alright so you haven’t given us much, but there could be a few reasons. You’re only doing 300 knots… At 20,000’ you’re looking at .67M which is extremely slow; you want to be upwards of .85-.95M. Don’t pickle right at the top of the staple, wait until Rmax2. What I think it is, is you don’t have LLG enabled. I’m not sure exactly how it works in BMS but you need to enable LLG. When you do this and the laser begins to fire after a POINT track (either manually or 2 seconds after pickle) then your TGP will bias forward of the target to account for the proper lead. Herein lies another possible issue… If you are zoomed in too far in NFOV you will get a ‘FOV LIMIT’ mnemonic in the TGP that prevents the TGP from pulling the required lead (it will not pull the target out of the FOV). This obviously causes the bomb to miss aft.
Otherwise, perform your DCLASSS/TCLASSS check and you should be good. Dropping through weather is fine as long as you meet the required lase time (classified).

Wow…great info! Back at it.

Fox info is always great, sometimes too much, as they are RL ones that sometimes don’t apply to BMS as he implies. Just keep it in mind.

Yup exactly. So take it with a grain of salt at times. I’ve worked with DeeJay a few times to improve things. And that’s what I’m here for. I get enough flying at work.

Thanks again, I’m up to 50% kills now….which is an improvement from 0%
Back to practicing. Man I’ve missed this sim.

I don’t think BMS will let the bombs off the rail if you are “too late” in CCRP (This is a relative term with guided munitions)–if you follow the cue down and pickle at -3 seconds and hold until the cue bounces you should be good. Even if the bomb doesn’t release when the cue reaches 0, you can let go and quick pickle within a few seconds to release. You should be able to bomb exactly like a dumb bomb CCRP without changing anything in the game other than setting CMBT for your laser and arming the laser (Turning it on). I don’t know if Point Track is implemented, but something else to think about; if your approach to the target is not relatively straight and you are relying on the auto-lase to kick in (Usually 8s prior to impact in BMS I think?) it may not have enough time to adjust course. Try releasing, then using TriggerDetent1 (Or whatever your laser is set to) for a few seconds right off the rail. This will push the bomb in the right direction to start so it is closer when the Auto-Lase kicks in.

Up to 100%!!! Thanks again, a combination of higher-speed, and manually lasing for a few seconds after release seemed to have done the trick. No to go try it in a campaign…

SUCCESS!!! Led a 4 ship to attack a column of T-72s. I had 4 direct hits! I didn’t get hit, nor did any of my wingmen. YIPEEE!! I have a way to survive CAS missions (after clearing out any Med-High SAMs, of course).

Well done :). You’ll do with other attack patterns later when you get more comfortable.

something I would like to ask here if that is okay;
I noticed that GBu’s don’t ripple, in other words you cannot guide four to the same target on one release, or am I doing it wrong?
I tried to cycle stations, tms up everything on the same point and set ripple to four. I read in the manuals but found very little about multiple releasing.

Depends which GBU you are using - some you can ripple, some you can’t
-
no, what I guess I didn’t explain well, the first bomb guides and tracks well, the others will fly off dumb.
Sorry. Ive tried this with gbu 10 and 24 and 12

What are your drop parameters?
-
so if a GBU allow to set ripple in SMS, they should all receive terminal guidance to the same spot?
because that’s not happening for me, the first one will guide, the others will fly off dumb.
I just tried again on the bomb range with gb/12s off a f-16c 52, the first one hit a dime, the other 3 flew off down range about 3 NM, I tried again from the same bearing and speed, the 3 offending bombs literally flew off and hit the same exact spot, so whatever is happening, is consistent.

Bombs might collide or occlude LOS to laser spot. Try a longer ripple distance and some angle off to get them laterally spaced.
