HOW TO INSTALL THE HOTAS COUGAR FIRMWARE / SOFTWARE ON WINDOWS 7, 64 BIT
-
Sweet. Thx.

Got it working. Followed Cubbie’s instructions. The only issue I had was that I had to unplug and plug back in the stick USB connector after everything was done. Other than that it was a pretty nominal install. Thx for the good advice.

I just purchased a super Mint hardly used HOTAS Cougar. Now I have the Warthog, along with my MFG Crosswinds so it’s not liek I really needed this. But I really enjoy the F16 models so much I wanted to collect this Cougar since it is harder to come by. I run Windows 10 so will this Win 7 work? Will this Cougar unit even run on Windows 10? I was just going to plug it in and see if it works and just program the controls through the Falcon game set up. “?”
Any advice? I just wanted something to match my F16 in a sense. -
Alrighty… after reading the dam message above I think I will answer my own question. ;p()
;p)

I just purchased a Cougar used in super Mint like new condition. We shall see…. Now I basically have everything here in 2017 being a super powerful PC, MFG Crosswinds, Da Warthog…etc…
Windows 10. I’m just gonna try and plug the Cougar in and see what happens. A 2.0 as opposed to a faster 3.0 eh?
I simply wanted the Cougar cause I enjoy the F16 lay out right? … I have downloaded but not installed the 2007 HCO Vista 64 bit if needed. And someone else also suggested the USB Deview program to select drivers for USB ports. But first I just want to plug this in and see how it does. I have a feeling there is gonna be conflict, but won’t know until I get there.
That makes pretty good sense though plugging it into a slower USB port. Man I forgot how old this Cougar is… Man… How old I am?!
;p() -
Hi Halgrym… I have down loaded the Deview and the HCO Vista 64 bit in case it is needed. Was the Dewiew tool easy to use? I have Windows 10 and a super fast machine. That one guy suggested plugging the Cougar into a 2.0 USB port as opposed to a faster USB 3.0. First thing I’m gonna do is just plug it in and see what happens next. I guess I didn’t really need to buy this considering what I have, but I am hoping I can get this super Mint Cougar working as I really enjoy the F16 lay out.
Too bad the Cougar throttle couldn’t have some kind of PIN adapter to plug in by itself. The sticks appear to be the same. I also noticed your question is just last month as much of the Cougar discussions seem to be from 2011 or 2012.
Any Advice? How is your Cougar still running now?
Thanx

So did you get it working for Windows 10 or not? I’m not clear if you have. I have an original Cougar I bought first hand in 2006! Can’t believe it’s damn 11 years old and has so little miles on it. But haven’t messed with it with Win 10 yet. I attempted but never followed through.

May I ask in case of windows 10 64bit and a cougar with old firmware, how do we update the firmware?
EDIT: Updater stays on the press trigger stage and waits there for ever.

I have Win10 64bit as well and I haven’t even got around getting Cougar working. I wonder if it will work at all

I’m still around. I was busy with school and flight instructor training. Hope all is well.

If you dont want a half baked eprom , dont push your luck Arty…
Do it from Win7(x86/x64) !!! … I’ve even tried from Win8.1 once , and gave up. I don’t want to even think about programming firmware from Win10.
Virtual machine (vmware) with Win7 could even work ok… Even Foxy’s DirectX axis test works, which dont work in win8.1… But flashing directly from Win10… I dont think so.
Cheers

Would it be possible to program it on an old laptop with Win7 or WinXP and then plug it in on Win10?
I bought my Cougar in 2006 and since Win7 I never tried to program it.

I’m not sure but when I had issues when win764 came out and till the cubpilots solution came out I remember I used my xp install to flash and then go back to win7 and it was working fine.
So I guess it will be ok.

I have a couple of old laptops laying around. That’s gotta do it. Otherwise BMS works fine with Win10 at the moment.

It was designed for XP and below… '98… Vista stuff and drivers package came after. So, Yes
Only thing that You’ll have to manual calibrate the stick on Win10 system. , so, minimum install vista driver package, ‘HOTAS Config’ etc…
One other thing I’ve noticed after Win10 Spring 1803 update ,… after any system restart or shutdown (NOT hibernate or standby) , my HOTAS IN and OUT in device manger have to be removed and driver reinstalled or
HOTAS Config looses write to stick .
After driver reinstall it works normally … ah feckin Win10… have some problems with ‘gaming’ controllers , just google for XBOX controllers. They even break system to bsod… geeee. that’s so cool os.I’ve made custom batch script when I notice that stick lost programming input , so it removes device , rescan system, and install selected devices.
\sysinternals\DEVCON remove "USB\VID_044F&PID_0400&MI_04*" \sysinternals\DEVCON remove "USB\VID_044F&PID_0400&MI_03*" \sysinternals\DEVCON rescan \sysinternals\DEVCON install "USB\VID_044F&PID_0400&MI_03*" \sysinternals\DEVCON install "USB\VID_044F&PID_0400&MI_04*"
Good luck.

Thanks man, I will have to get back to you as I have no idea where to start at the moment. When I first got the HOTAS 12 years ago, I remember flashing it with new firmware I want to say but never used it to its full potential as there was no BMS around etc. What I would need is a beginner guide as if I just bought the HOTAS today and start from scratch.

So my brothers what’s the verdict on getting the Cougar going with w10/64?
Oh and is it still advisable to unplug the TQS when firmware flahing?
